Book Tapping State Government Information Sources

Download or read book Tapping State Government Information Sources written by Lori L. Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each state government produces large varieties and quantities of useful information that are largely unknown outside their state of origin. This book leads the public to the most useful information sources produced by each state, as well as to depository libraries that will facilitate more effective research. For each of the 50 states, important publications are detailed, along with information on how to obtain them. The publications' topics range from crime statistics to vital statistics, business statistics, health information, statistical abstracts, education directories, state budgets, economic indicators, state laws and legal information, and more. Tapping State Government Information Sources has a broader focus than previously published books in this subject area, most of which have focused solely on depository laws, useful state publications, or indexes to state publications. This book covers all three. The first chapter describes print and electronic sources that provide information about all 50 states. Each state's resources are then described in individual chapters. When possible, information about how to order a copy of the source is given, as are Web addresses for titles that are available online. At the beginning of each state chapter, the state's legal definition of public document or its equivalent is given, which may be of interest to librarians in states that are reexamining their own depository laws.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government in Missouri: Local, State, and National IN writing this book I have had in mind the needs of the children in the elementary schools of Missouri. As most of these pupils will not attend a high school or college, they should receive their training in citizen ship before they leave the elementary school. It has been the primary aim to develop in the pupil some appreciation of his membership in the state, and the rights and duties arising therefrom. Hence the text begins with the family and school, township and county, city and village, - agencies of government with which the pupil is or may be made familiar through the facts of his daily life. Excerpt: ...worth the blank paper upon which they were written. I understand upon this question the Constitution of the United States and the laws enacted by Congress, are the supreme law of the land, any laws passed by the State to the contrary notwithstanding. But I ask those States to retract them, and do us right. I beseech them--although gentlemen do not like to see a man say that he comes in the attitude of "submission;" yet if it would do any good, and restore peace to my country, I could fall down on my knees to the people of the North and ask them to repeal those laws. I would in the same spirit fall on my knees to the people of the South, and ask them to abstain from their rash acts, so that this country might again he united, and peace be established on a permanent basis. While I say to the people of the North that they have done us injustice, I say to our erring sisters of the South, that they, too, have done us wrong. I think their acts have been precipitate--not warranted by law, not warranted by reserved rights; that they have, as American citizens, undertaken to seek redress for the grievances of which they complain in a manner not at all warranted. Tbey have not sought redress by taking a legal position, nor by throwing themselves back upon their inherent right of revolution. They have not done so. Sir, I am one of those men that believe, that, as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, whenever the Government fails to accomplish the ends for which it was created, the right of revolution is clear. And I tell you, sir, to-day, that, should that day ever arise, I will be among the first who will act upon that right. But, sir, I can see nothing in the state of things now existing--I can see nothing that is...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil Government: Of the United States and the State of Missouri When the State d104-Book Commission met in the year 1897 to adopt a series of text-books for use in public schools, about thirty civil governments were submitted for adoption. None of them was satisfactory. Thereupon members of the commission who were acquainted with my School History of Missouri suggested that I write and submit a manuscript of a Civil Government. I did so, and it was adopted, and for five years after its publication it had a large place in the schools. Subsequently the book was entirely rewritten and a revised edition brought out in 1904, and with a few minor changes in the text made necessary by changes in laws and constitutions has been in general use ever since. Within the last year the book has been thoroughly revised again. In the natural evolution of the government of a great people new institutions are added in the course of a few years and things once unimportant assume large proportions; they call for new sections, and these have been added. Other things have become less important, and the discussion of them has been accordingly reduced. Every sentence of former texts retained in this has been rigidly tested, in order to bring it strictly up to date and make it accurately express the fact. The result is a book brought down in every sentence to the date of publication. In the development of the book I have not attempted to construct an ideal government. Nor have I enlarged upon the imperfections of American government. I have been content to present the Government as it is. The scientist who writes a text-book on botany traces plant life from seed to full-grown tree. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
