Book excerpt: This summary report provides an overview of findings from the fourth annualized inventory of Missouri forests based on data collected from 2012 to 2018. Forest land area remained stable at 15.4 million acres, and 80 percent of forest land is in the oak/hickory forest-type group. Forests in the State continue to mature with 64 percent in large diameter stands and 61 percent in stands older than 60 years of age. Live tree net volume on timberland totals 20.9 billion cubic feet, and 79 percent of that volume is in growing-stock trees. Mortality increased by 17 percent from 2013 to 2018 to 333 million cubic feet per year, resulting in a 7 percent decrease in annual net growth to 371 million cubic feet. Additional information on land-use change, fragmentation, ownership, urban forests, species composition, stand structure, forest carbon, down woody material, regeneration, invasive plants, forest pests, tree health, and timber products output are also presented. A detailed interactive report is available at https://doi.org/10.2737/NRS-RB-122-INT, and supplemental information, including (1) tables summarizing quality assurance, (2) a core set of tabular estimates for a variety of forest resources, and (3) user and database guides for P2 and P2+ protocols, can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.2737/NRS-RB-122.

Book excerpt: The third full cycle of annual inventories (2009-2013) of Missouri's forests, completed in 2013, reports that there are an estimated 15.5 million acres of forest land in the State. An estimated 60 percent of the forest land area is in sawtimber size stands, 30 percent are pole timber size, and 10 percent are seedling/sapling size or nontstocked [sic]. The net volume of live trees on forest land increased by 4 percent, from 20.1 million cubic feet in 2008, to 21.0 million cubic feet in 2013. Average annual net growth of live trees on forest land decreased by more than 25 percent, from an average of 36 cubic feet per acre in 2008, to an average of 26 cubic feet per acre in 2013. This report includes additional information on forest attributes, land-use change, carbon, and forest health. In addition to this document, Missouri Forests 2013: Statistics, Methods, and Quality Assurance is online at https://doi.org/10.2737/NRS-RB-108. It contains 1) descriptive information on methods, statistics, and quality assurance of data collection, 2) a glossary of terms, 3) tables that summarize quality assurance, 4) a core set of tabular estimates for a variety of forest resources, 5) a set of user and database guides for P2, P3, and P2+, and 6) a Microsoft Access database that represents an archive of data used in this report, with tools that allow users to produce customized estimates.

Book Missouri s Forest Resources in 2005

Download or read book Missouri s Forest Resources in 2005 written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Forest Service, Northern Research Station's Forest Inventory and Analysis program is continuing its annual inventory of Missouri's forest resources. This report presents estimates of area, volume, and biomass using data for 2005, and growth, removals, and mortality using data for the most recent remeasurement period. Estimates from this inventory showed a total of 14.7 million acres of forest land in the state. The estimate of total net volume of live trees on forest land was 18.8 billion cubic feet. Higher than average mortality values for certain oak species are likely due to the increased age of the state?s forests, as well from a drought-induced oak decline over much of the past 10 years.

Book excerpt: "Forests provided the economic basis for much of the westward expansion of the nation. As the eastern timber resources were used and became further from the newer westward communities the extensive pine forests of the South and the Ozark Plateau were exploited. Railroads were built and a prosperous lumbering business began in the southern Missouri areas"--Foreword.

Book excerpt: The first completed annual inventory of Missouri's forests reports more than 14.6 million acres of forest land. Softwood forests make up 4 percent of the total forest land area; oak/hickory forest types make up about three-fourths of the total hardwood forest land area. Missouri's forests have continued to increase in volume, with all-live tree volume on forest land in Missouri an estimated 18 billion cubic feet compared to 9 billion cubic feet in 1972. All-live tree biomass on forest land in Missouri amounted to 573 million dry tons in 1999-2003. Almost 9 percent was in small trees, 74 percent was in growing-stock trees, and 17 percent was in non-growing-stock trees. Softwood growth was 44.1 million cubic feet per year and hardwood growth was 585.3 million cubic feet per year. Oak species constitute roughly three-fourths of the volume and three-fourths of the harvest. Total net all-live volume of oaks on timberland increased by 24 percent between 1989 and 2003. More than 82 percent of Missouri's forest land is held by private landowners.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missouri's Forest Resource, 1989: An Analysis More accurate survey information was obtained during the 1989 survey than otherwise would have been feasible because of intensified field sampling. Such sampling was made possible by additional funding provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation. The Department also surveyed primary wood-using plants in the State (smith and Jones Data from this survey were used to help estimate the quantity of timber products harvested in the State. Missouri Department of Conser vation personnel also assisted in training field personnel, analyzing infor mation obtained from the survey, and preparing this report. Aerial photos used in the Missouri Forest Inventory were furnished by the usda Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and the Mis souri Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geology and Land Survey.
