Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Rise and Development of Presbyterianism in Scotland Throughout the whole history of the Reformed Church in Scotland one of the most outstanding features will be found to be the overwhelming desire to maintain the independence of the Church from all secular control, and the most characteristic feature of the disputes which went on during the reigns of the Stewart Kings (especially James VI and I, and Charles I), was the failure of those Monarchs to appreciate the Scottish sentiments Of Patriotism, Protestantism and Freedom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Missions in the Empire State: As Exhibited by the Work and Growth of the Baptist Missionary Convention of the State of New York The importance of a mission field is determined not alone by its territorial area, nor the number of inhabit ants, but by its strategic position in relation to other fields, and its influence in advancing the kingdom of God in the world. An individual in the wilds of Africa. May be as precious in the sight of God as one in Amer ica; but as an evangelizing agent a single convert in America may count for a thousand converts among the heathen. The State of New York as a mission field must be valued by its influence in the nation and upon the world at large. From this point of view its impor tance cannot be overestimated. The work of the Bap tist Missionary Convention of the State of New York is vitally related to the salvation of souls, the life and en largement of the churches and the denomination, the maintenance of evangelical doctrines and practices, the welfare of the commonwealth, and the evangelization of the world. With what success that work has been prosecuted is a question that ought to concern every intelligent Chris tian. No record, aside from the annual reports, has been made of this work except a small book entitled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Hudson Taylor and the China Inland Mission

Download or read book Hudson Taylor and the China Inland Mission written by Mrs. Howard Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hudson Taylor and the China Inland Mission: The Growth of a Work of God Surely never was man better fitted for his work than he for the difficult undertaking of founding and conducting a great interdenominational and international mission in million-peopled China. The China Inland Mission was con ceived in his soul, and every stage of its advance sprung from his personal exertions. In the quiet of his heart, in deep unutterable communings with God, the mission had its origin, and it remains his memorial. On that noble monument, not of perishable marble, and in characters not of man's inditing, his name is written. His dust sleeps now in China. Silence has fallen on the lips which long pleaded China's cause, but the effects of the plea remain in the con version of thousands called out of heathen darkness Into God's marvellous light, and the existence of a mission whose present influence and future growth are beyond our powers to estimate. To God be all the glory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Making the Mission written by Ocean Howell and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, residents of the city’s iconic Mission District bucked the city-wide development plan, defiantly announcing that in their neighborhood, they would be calling the shots. Ever since, the Mission has become known as a city within a city, and a place where residents have, over the last century, organized and reorganized themselves to make the neighborhood in their own image. In Making the Mission, Ocean Howell tells the story of how residents of the Mission District organized to claim the right to plan their own neighborhood and how they mobilized a politics of place and ethnicity to create a strong, often racialized identity—a pattern that would repeat itself again and again throughout the twentieth century. Surveying the perspectives of formal and informal groups, city officials and district residents, local and federal agencies, Howell articulates how these actors worked with and against one another to establish the very ideas of the public and the public interest, as well as to negotiate and renegotiate what the neighborhood wanted. In the process, he shows that national narratives about how cities grow and change are fundamentally insufficient; everything is always shaped by local actors and concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Missions: July, 1875 It is not my opinion alone, that the great bulk of these poor people will pass away before the increase of American population and the growth of American civilization. I am persuaded that, if you want Institutions for them, you must lay your foundations on other soil. For, if the mineral wealth of New Mexico approaches its estimated value and extent, it willbe sure to invite a large population. The proportion of arable land to the whole extent of the Territory is quite small. Every foot of it. Will be eagerly sought after, as furnishing the surest basis of wealth. Then will be apt to come a conflict in which only the higher class Of Mexicans will be able to stand their ground. The land will change owners, and the deep ploughshare of the American will be driven ruthlessly over the very foundations of ancient homes.
