Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Californias first settlement began on a trail called El Camino Real, or The Royal Road, that was traveled by missionary pathfinders, soldiers, and conquistadors on a dramatic journey into a mysterious land. Monterey was discovered in 1603, leading to the quest. Explorers Don Gaspar de Portol and Juan Bautista de Anza, along with ambitious Franciscan missionaries, founded 21 monumental Spanish missions and several asistencias and chapels for native neophytes, travelers, and visitors to Alta California. Following the initial landing in 1769 at San Diegos seaport, Fr. Junpero Serra founded Mission San Diego de Alcal, Californias first landmark, at the original presidio site. The mission stands today exactly where it was moved, rebuilt, and completed in 1813. The native populations of California witnessed years of change from a sleepy province to the status of US statehood. The Spanish missions forged the powerful underpinnings of the Golden States earliest settlements 80 years prior to the worlds largest migration to California, the 1849 Gold Rush.

Book California Missions Presidios

Download or read book California Missions Presidios written by Alastair Worden, Randy Leffingwell and published by . This book was released on with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The missions and presidios of California are among the state’s oldest structures and are the most visited historical monuments. These notable buildings are an integral part of California’s history. The state’s recorded history essentially began with the Spanish missions along the ambitious chain of 21 missions on El Camino Reál (The Royal Highway) and the men who founded them. California Missions and Presidios is a gorgeous book that presents the history of these intriguing sanctuaries of peace and beauty. The eye-popping photography of Alastair Worden and Randy Leffingwell captures their unique character, while Leffingwell’s accessible text brings to life the overall history of California’s conquest by the Spanish; the construction and operation of the missions, presidios, ranchos, and adobes; and the background of the mission architecture and style. Seemingly unchanged, these missions and presidios have survived the centuries remarkably well—still welcoming visitors as a refuge of serenity and splendor while providing a glimpse into the lives of the spirited pioneers who built these structures and lived and worked there.

Book Mission San Antonio de Padua

Download or read book Mission San Antonio de Padua written by Kim Serafin and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2003-12-15 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the missions is a compelling human drama that is a vital piece not only of California history, but also of American history. Indeed, many keys to California's past lie in the stories of the 20 missions that stretch along the state's west coast from San Diego to San Francisco. This vital series is compatible with the mission-based curriculum used in fourth-grade California classrooms. It resonates equally with all social studies programs that explore the defunct notion of colonialism and its controversial role in the history of the United States, and with curricula that seek to explore the interaction of different cultures and the rights and voices of indigenous peoples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from San Diego Mission California, in the early days, was divided into four mili tary districts. The headquarters or garrisons were located at San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco, respectively. These military posts provided the guards for the Missions situated within the limits of their jurisdiction. The military district of San Diego embraced the Missions of San Diego, San Luis Rey, San Juan Capistrano, and San Gabriel, of which the City of Los Angeles in spiritual mat ters was a dependency. Although independent of one an other, a sort of union or connection existed among the Missions of the district. This suggested the geographical rather than the chronological order in relating the local his tory of the twenty-one Missions.
