Download or read book The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa written by Robert W. Strayer and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1978-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa calls into question a number of common assumptions about the encounter between European missionaries and African societies in colonial Kenya. The book explores the origins of those communities associated with the Anglican Church Missionary Society from 1875 to 1935, examines the development within them of a "mission culture," probes their internal conflicts and tensions, and details their relationship to the larger colonial society. Professor Strayer argues that genuinely religious issues were important in the formation of these communities, that missionaries were ambivalent in their attitudes toward modernizing change and the colonial state alike, and that mission communities possessed substantial attractions even in the face of competition with independent churches. Dr. John Lonsdale of Trinity College, Cambridge has said that "It is a sensitive piece of revisionist history which breaks down the simple dichotomy of 'missions' and 'Africans' commonly found in earlier historiographies--and even in the period of profound crisis over female circumcision in Kikuyuland. In this, Professor Strayer shows convincingly how mission communities could be preserved from destruction by principled divisions between Africans as much as between their white missionaries. He has pursued themes rather than events and has therefore been able to make remarkably intimate observations of mission communities which were following their own internal patterns of growth, yet within the context of a deepening situation of colonial dependence.

Throughout the book, contributors explore how the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the fragilities of African society as well as the weaknesses in the Church’s role in helping and serving African communities. The African Church and COVID-19 analyzes the question of how the Church in Kenya should move forward in a post-COVID-19 era to address the vulnerabilities of socio-economic and political structures in Africa.

Download or read book Mission in Progress written by Barden Chirwa and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the establishment of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Malawi in 1902, there is now available much information on the cases, narratives and experiences of women that shows the contribution of women to the progress of the SDA mission in Malawi. That record reveals a notable increase in the developing role of women in the SDA Church in Malawi, blended with both successful and challenging experiences. This has prompted the writing of this book. My aim is to present a historical record of the developing role of women in the SDA Church in Malawi. The purpose is to provide a first critical analysis, in a Malawian context, of a wider range of biblical and socio-cultural issues affecting the role of women in the SDA Church in Malawi.

Download or read book Mission in Motion written by Jay Matenga and published by William Carey Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before has the phenomenon of mission mobilization been so broadly researched. In a vein similar to Too Valuable To Lose and Worth Keeping, the World Evangelical Alliance Mission Commission commissioned a research team to investigate what motivates people into mission service from around the globe. Mobilization practitioners recorded, translated and transcribed hundreds of hours of interview dialogue that explored reasons for mission involvement from Eastern Europe, Western Europe, North and South America, Oceania, East Asia, South Asia and East Africa. The data was subsequently analyzed to draw out common themes, and Mission In Motion presents the results of this research. This book is the first definitive exploration of the recent history, ministries and methods of mission mobilization. The evangelical missions community is expending much energy and resource trying to raise up workers for the Lord’s harvest, but is it helping? Are the means, models, methods, and mechanisms being applied to this end effective? What does influence people to greater involvement in mission—whatever they understand mission to be? Furthermore, what hinders it? In addressing these questions, Mission In Motion allows the interviewed respondents to speak for themselves, in an open and frank manner. Some results confirm common beliefs, but others may surprise you.

Download or read book The Practice of Mission in Egypt written by Tharwat Wahba and published by Langham Monographs. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most mission studies have focused on the work of Western missionaries going to Majority World countries, with few examining indigenous churches and their relationship with Western mission agencies in practicing mission. This book is a historical study of the relationship between the Evangelical Church in Egypt and the American Presbyterian Mission. Wahba covers from when the missionary work began in 1854 until after the departure of the Mission from Egypt in 1967, and the transfer of all the work to the Egyptian Evangelical Church. Tracing the mission work of Egyptians within Egypt and neighbouring Sudan, Wahba analyses the impact that the relationship with the American Mission had and how it determined the indigenous Church’s practice and perspective of mission.

Download or read book Women and Missions Past and Present written by Shirley Ardener and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by eminent anthropologists, missiologists and historians explores the hitherto neglected topic of women missionaries and the effect of Christian missionary activity upon women. The book consists of two parts. The first part looks at 19th century women missionaries as presented in literature, at the backgrounds and experience of women in the mission field and at the attitudes of missionary societies towards their female workers. Although they are traditionally presented as wives and support workers, it becomes apparent that, on the contrary, women missionaries often played a culturally important role. The second and longest section asks whether women missionaries are indeed a special case, and provides some fascinating studies of the impact of Christian missions on women in both historical material and a wealth of contemporary material.Of particular value is the perspective of those who were themselves objects of missionary activity and who reflected upon this experience. Women actively absorbed and adapted the teachings of the Christian missionaries, and Western models are seen to be utilized and developed in sometimes unexpected ways.

Download or read book The Story of Faith Missions written by Klaus Fiedler and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born of nineteenth-century Evangelical Awakening, and closely linked to Hudson Taylor and the China Inland Mission he founded in 1865, faith missions were unique in two key areas: they were interdenominational and they held firmly to the 'faith principle' of financial support. The faith mission movement has lost none of its vitality and relevance as it continues to play an important evangelistic role in Africa and worldwide. The result of more than a decade of research in Africa, Europe and the United States, and extensively supported by maps and charts, this book is the most comprehensive study available on the faith mission movement in Africa. Setting faith missions in the context of the many revival and missionary movements, which have shaped Protestant church history, the author describes their spiritual and practical evolution over 125 years, and outlines the challenges they face today.
Download or read book The Trouble with Kenya McKenzian Blueprint written by Lawi Sultan Njeremani and published by PQADVANCEMENT PRESS. This book was released on with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The McKenzian Blueprint. Some lines are short; some lines are long. All lines are variable. Some appear parallel but connect in latency. Some appear linear. When held against the light they reveal dependence or independence; Freedom or constraints; Empowerment or strife; Subjugation or Justice. The Trouble with Kenya is a microcosm of any given country's social and justice pillars. These pillars have been subordinated to the political and economic pillars in many societies with politics and the economy being deified as the all-encompassing enablers of the advancement of Nations. With the world becoming more connected, happenings in far-flung places are increasingly becoming risk factors locally, precipitating issues of local concern and increasing the impediments to collective human development. All these may appear to be abstract concepts in daily life where making the next pay check, putting food on the table or securing a comfortable future for oneself and family is an exhausting endeavor but those who ignore the harbinger flicks subject themselves to ongoing or future succumb. The story of the founding of Kenya as a country and the continuous strides towards nationhood is similar to many countries globally that have had a monarchy in their founding DNA. Indeed, some countries have excelled in building institutions that ensure an equitable society, while some continue to struggle with cartelization and usurpation of independence of institutions and commensurately experience unjust societal confluence where only a few enjoy the benefits of a nation-wide toil.
