Book Jane Austen s Philosophy of the Virtues

Download or read book Jane Austen s Philosophy of the Virtues written by S. Emsley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Austen's novels in relation to her philosophical and religious context, demonstrating that the combination of the classical and theological traditions of the virtues is central to her work. Austen's heroines learn to confront the fundamental ethical question of how to live their lives. Instead of defining virtue only in the narrow sense of female sexual virtue, Austen opens up questions about a plurality of virtues. In fresh readings of the six completed novels, plus Lady Susan, Emsley shows how Austen's complex imaginative representations of the tensions among the virtues engage with and expand on classical and Christian ethical thought.

Book Peril and Protection in British Courtship Novels

Download or read book Peril and Protection in British Courtship Novels written by Geri Giebel Chavis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peril and Protection in British Courtship Novels: A Study in Continuity and Change explores the use and context of danger/safety language in British courtship novels published between 1719 and 1920. The term "courtship novel" encompasses works focusing on both female and male protagonists’ journeys toward marriage, as well as those reflecting the intertwined nature of comic courtship and tragic seduction scenarios. Through careful tracking of peril and protection terms and imagery within the works of widely-read, influential authors, Professor Chavis provides a fresh view of the complex ways that the British novel has both maintained the status quo and embodied cultural change. Lucid discussions of each novel, arranged in chronological order, shed new light on major characters’ preoccupations, values, internal struggles, and inter-actional styles and demonstrate the ways in which gender ideology and social norms governing male-female relationships were not only perpetuated but also challenged and satirized during the course of the British novel’s development. Blending close textual analysis with historical/cultural and feminist criticism, this multi-faceted study invites readers to look with both a microscopic lens at the nuances of figurative and literal language and a telescopic lens at the ways in which modifications to views of masculinity and femininity and interactions within the courtship arena inform the novel genre’s evolution.

Book Narratives of Women s Health and Hysteria in the Nineteenth Century Novel

Download or read book Narratives of Women s Health and Hysteria in the Nineteenth Century Novel written by Melissa Rampelli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of Women’s Health and Hysteria in the Nineteenth-Century Novel looks extensively at hysteria discourse through medical and sociological texts and examines how this body of work intersects with important cultural debates to define women’s social, physical, and mental health. The book sketches out prominent shifts in cultural reactions to the idea of diffused agency and the prized model of the interiorized, individual person capable of self will and governance. Melissa Rampelli takes up the work of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy, showing how the authors play with and manipulate stock literary figures to contribute to this dialogue about the causes and cures of women’s hysterical distress.

Book The Architecture of Space Time in the Novels of Jane Austen

Download or read book The Architecture of Space Time in the Novels of Jane Austen written by Ruta Baublyté Kaufmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that there are recurrent spatiotemporal patterns and structures in six Jane Austen novels which constitute a source of enduring, if unconscious, pleasure. More precisely, the book contends that there are overlapping natural and cultural cycles which co-exist in a constantly transmuting space-time and which are counterpointed with the linearity of pivotal events that drive the plot forwards. This work examines the psychological relations to these space-time patterns of the characters, principally the heroines, focusing on the transformations of their emotional states which prompt linear leaps.
