Book Naming and Mapping the Gods in the Ancient Mediterranean

Download or read book Naming and Mapping the Gods in the Ancient Mediterranean written by Thomas Galoppin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 1080 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient religions are definitely complex systems of gods, which resist our understanding. Divine names provide fundamental keys to gain access to the multiples ways gods were conceived, characterized, and organized. Among the names given to the gods many of them refer to spaces: cities, landscapes, sanctuaries, houses, cosmic elements. They reflect mental maps which need to be explored in order to gain new knowledge on both the structure of the pantheons and the human agency in the cultic dimension. By considering the intersection between naming and mapping, this book opens up new perspectives on how tradition and innovation, appropriation and creation play a role in the making of polytheistic and monotheistic religions. Far from being confined to sanctuaries, in fact, gods dwell in human environments in multiple ways. They move into imaginary spaces and explore the cosmos. By proposing a new and interdiciplinary angle of approach, which involves texts, images, spatial and archeaeological data, this book sheds light on ritual practices and representations of gods in the whole Mediterranean, from Italy to Mesopotamia, from Greece to North Africa and Egypt. Names and spaces enable to better define, differentiate, and connect gods.

Book Restoration as Fabrication of Origins

Download or read book Restoration as Fabrication of Origins written by Henri de Riedmatten and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this publication is to clarify the relationships between material restoration and politics in Italian Renaissance art. The focus of this research is on the question of origin as a foothold for political, patrimonial, and cultural identity. These claims were enacted within a system which, rather than restoring the initial forms and meanings of existing objects, remodeled the past according to new identity requirements: spaces were reorganized, and works of art invested with new meanings. Their material and aesthetic reality was thus transformed and redefined. The aim is therefore to analyze the potential physical modifications of these artefacts in light of their symbolic recoding. Restoration practices in Italian Renaissance art Reassessing the concept of Renaissance Recording of ancient works for political purposes

Book Formes Du Salut

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emmanuelle Mercier
  • Publisher : Presses universitaires de Louvain
  • Release : 2020-05-27
  • ISBN : 287558958X
  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Formes Du Salut written by Emmanuelle Mercier and published by Presses universitaires de Louvain. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Stone Flesh Spirit The Entombment of Christ in Late Medieval Burgundy and Champagne

Download or read book Stone Flesh Spirit The Entombment of Christ in Late Medieval Burgundy and Champagne written by Donna L. Sadler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grief binds the worshipers together in an adagio of sorrow as they encounter the sculptural representation of the Entombment of Christ. Located in funerary chapels, parish churches, cemeteries, and hospitals, these works embody the piety of the later Middle Ages. In this book, Donna Sadler examines the sculptural Entombments from Burgundy and Champagne through a variety of lenses, including performance theory, embodied perception, and the invocation of the absent presence of the Holy Sepulcher. The author demonstrates how the action of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus entombing Christ in the presence of the Marys and John operates in a commemorative and collective fashion: the worshiper enters the realm of the holy and becomes a participant in the biblical event.

Book The Gospel of Judas in Context

Download or read book The Gospel of Judas in Context written by Maddalena Scopello and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers gathered in this book were presented at the First International Conference (held in Paris, University of Sorbonne, October 27th-28th 2006), devoted to the newly discovered Gospel of Judas, preserved in the 4th century Coptic Codex Tchacos. These essays explore several crucial literary, historical and doctrinal issues related to this gospel, composed in the second half of the 2nd century. This unexpected discovery sheds a new light on the role attributed to Judas by some Gnostic Christian movements. A hotly debated question is precisely the significance of Judas in this gospel: hero or villain? Special attention is given to the sources - Greek, Jewish, Christian and even Iranian - used by the unknown author. This book will be of special interest for historians of late Antiquity religions and scholars in New Testament studies, Gnosticism and Coptic literature.

Book Visual Arts and the Auld Alliance

Download or read book Visual Arts and the Auld Alliance written by Bryony Coombs and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the links between patronage, identity and Franco-Scottish relations in the late medieval and early modern periods This monograph is the first book-length study of Franco-Scottish relations and the visual arts in the late-medieval and early modern periods Offers new interdisciplinary approaches to Franco-Scottish history, that challenge traditional accounts where there has been a failure to investigate visual material Based on extensive archival research and making use of unknown and little-known visual and archival evidence, this work examines material from collections held in Scotland, France, the Netherlands, and Italy Applies innovative interdisciplinary approaches, combining patronage studies and a consideration of artistic agency. It develops new methodologies combining art historical methods with insights drawn from political, military, and architectural histories and manuscript studies Forms a significant contribution to our understanding of the history of Scotland’s place in Europe and the significance of its historic ties to France in particular This monograph provides the first substantial analysis of the visual arts commissioned by Scots in France prior to Mary Queen of Scots. It examines how Scottish identity was represented and promoted through patronage of the visual arts. Tying together previously unpublished archival documents with under-researched visual and material culture, this monograph examines how Scots used patronage to establish their place in French society thus furthering the reputation of the royal house of Scotland, and progressing their own social, political, and diplomatic aims. Incorporating analysis of grand architectural projects, such as the foundation of the Sainte-Chapelle at Vic-le-Comte, and studies of extraordinary manuscripts such as the Monypenny Breviary and the military manuals of Bérault Stuart, this work highlights recurring themes within architectural history, art history, and material culture studies. By addressing broader questions of Scotland's historic relations with Europe, it makes a necessary contribution to modern day concerns.
