It is used in the paper and pulp bleaching industries as a sterilizing agent, in hospitals as a biocide in water treatment, and as an improving agent in flour. This document focuses on exposures via routes relevant to occupational settings principally related to the production of chlorine dioxide, but also contains environmental information. The health effects and environmental fate and effects of chlorine dioxide used in the treatment of drinking-water, together with those of halogenated organics produced by the interaction between the disinfectant and other materials present in the water are covered in a recent Environmental Health Criteria publication (EHC No. 216 2000) and are not dealt with in detail here. Chlorine dioxide is an irritant and it seems likely that health effects would be restricted to local responses. The few ecotoxicity data available show that chlorine dioxide can be highly toxic to aquatic organisms.

Book excerpt: Even though artificial insemination is a simple technique that has been practiced for over a century, it has long been carried out under poor conditions due to an inadequate understanding of repro ductive physiology and antagonistic socio-ethical attitudes. Accor dingly, until fairly recently it was a medical act with a limited scientific basis which was practised more or less clandestinely. The development of semen preservation has totally changed the conditions of artificial insemination, especially in regard to flexibility and safeguards in its application. Although the use of fresh semen continues, it is now clear that the future of arti ficial insemination is closely linked to semen preservation. During the past two decades, semen banks have been developed in many countries. This has most often been the result of the initiative of individual physicians in either the private or public sectors. In France, a national system of semen banks (CECOS) was begun in 1973. Although there has been cooperation within this system in the areas of both research and management, a need to com municate and compare experiences with those from other countries was perceived. Thus, the first International Symposium on Artifi cial Insemination and Semen Preservation was planned and held in Paris, France in April 1979. Thirty-seven countries were represented byihdividuals from many concerned disciplines.

The teeh­ niques each yield information of a different type and in eonjunetion with classie ra­ diology must be used safely and with a logical sequenee in the investigation of a diag­ nostie problem. They have greatly inereased the available evidenee on whieh diag­ nosis is based and their use should diminish the number of false diagnoses and ul­ timately improve treatment. The applieations ofthese reeently developed diagnostie methods in urology are reviewed in this book, based on the main eontributions given by a wide range of experts in their field during the last Congress of the European Assoeiation ofUrology, held in Athens in 1980.
