Book Since We are Justified by Faith

Download or read book Since We are Justified by Faith written by Michael Parsons and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible and academic reading of the doctrine of justification by faith. It is often assumed that the Reformation taught justification by faith as if there was a monolithic view of the doctrine. Since We Are Justified By Faith is a collection of important essays that dispel this myth, demonstrating the diverse theologies of that period. Experts in the field, including Cameron MacKenzie, Aaron OKelly, Jeff Fisher, Kirk MacGregor, Mary Patton Baker, Karin Spiecker Stetina, David Hall, Bonnie Pattison, Timothy Shaun Price, Andre Gazal, and Chris Ross, write on the theologies of Luther, Melanchthon, Oecolampadius, Marpeck, Calvin, and the English reformers to give a nuanced reading of the doctrine in sixteenth-century Protestant theology.

Book Ministry in the Anglican Tradition from Henry VIII to 1900

Download or read book Ministry in the Anglican Tradition from Henry VIII to 1900 written by John L. Kater and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once Henry VIII declared the Church of England free of papal control in the sixteenth century and the process of Reformation began, the Church of England rapidly developed a distinctive style of ministry that reflected the values and practices of the English people. In Ministry in the Anglican Tradition from Henry VIII to 1900, John L. Kater traces the complex process by which Anglican ministry evolved in dialogue with social and political changes in England and around the world. By the end of the Victorian period, ministry in the Anglican tradition had begun to take on the broad diversity we know today. This book explores the many ways in which laypeople, clergy, and missionaries in multiple settings and under various conditions have contributed to the emergence of a uniquely Anglican way of responding to the call to serve Christ and the world. That ministry preserved many of the insights of its Reformation ancestors and their heritage, even as it continued to respond to the new and often unfamiliar contexts it now calls home.

Book Heresy Trials and English Women Writers 1400 1670

Download or read book Heresy Trials and English Women Writers 1400 1670 written by Genelle Gertz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the emergence of women's writing from the procedures of heresy trials and recovers a tradition of women's trial narratives from the late Middle Ages to the seventeenth century. Analyzing the interrogations of Margery Kempe, Anne Askew, Marian Protestant women, Margaret Clitherow and Quakers Katherine Evans and Sarah Cheevers, the book examines the complex dynamics of women's writing, preaching and authorship under religious persecution and censorship. Archival sources illuminate not only the literary choices women made, showing how they wrote to justify their teaching even when their authority was questioned, but also their complex relationship with male interrogators. Women's speech was paradoxically encouraged and constrained, and male editors preserved their writing while shaping it to their own interests. This book challenges conventional distinctions between historical and literary forms while identifying a new tradition of women's writing across Catholic, Protestant and Sectarian communities and the medieval/early modern divide.

Book The English Religious Tradition and the Genius of Anglicanism

Download or read book The English Religious Tradition and the Genius of Anglicanism written by Geoffrey Rowell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book twelve distinguished scholars explore the character of the English Church through the remarkable individuals who have played a part in its long history. Over the centuries these outstanding personalities have made an enduring contribution to the development of the Anglican spirit. That so many of them have a place in the history of our literature too, demonstrates that the English religious tradition has been a source of inspiration and a living relationship between the Church and the Word. This book is more than a celebration of our religious heritage. The English Church has been shaped by its island nation and people, yet it has grown bigger than its island home with churches in over 160 countries, But how can Anglicanism survive in a spiritually diminished world, where Christianity itself is under threat? In the final chapter, Stephen Sykes, the Bishop of Ely, takes an unflinching look at Anglicanism today. The twelve chapters in this volume were originally given as a series of lectures in the Chapel of Keble College, Oxford in 1992 to mark the bicentenary of the birth of John Keble (1792-1866). Sermons given by the Bishop of Oxford and by the Chaplain of Keble College to mark the anniversary are also included and there is a Foreword by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
