Book Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems

Download or read book Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems written by K. H. Mann and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of this widely respected text providescomprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the effects ofbiological–physical interactions in the oceans from themicroscopic to the global scale. considers the influence of physical forcing on biologicalprocesses in a wide range of marine habitats including coastalestuaries, shelf-break fronts, major ocean gyres, coral reefs, coastal upwelling areas, and the equatorial upwelling system investigates recent significant developments in this rapidlyadvancing field includes new research suggesting that long-term variability inthe global atmospheric circulation affects the circulation of oceanbasins, which in turn brings about major changes in fish stocks. This discovery opens up the exciting possibility of being able topredict major changes in global fish stocks written in an accessible, lucid style, this textbook isessential reading for upper-level undergraduates and graduatestudents studying marine ecology and biological oceanography

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feeding Ecology of Fish establishes a comprehensive framework for the variable ecological patterns exemplified by feeding fishes. The author, a former president of the American Fisheries Society, devotes special attention to synthesizing empirical studies in categorizing feeding patterns. This book shows how remarkably adaptable fish can be with regard to selecting food, often from trophic levels not usually occupied. Relying on a thorough literature survey, Feeding Ecology of Fish will be an invaluable reference for both fishery scientists and ecological theorists. Organization by trophic level Emphasis on empirical studies Broad coverage of a diverse field

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference on the Benthic Boundary Layer was held under the auspices of the NATO Science Committee as part of its continuing effort to promote the useful progress of science through international cooperation. Science Committee Conferences are deliberately designed to focus attention on unsolved problems, with carefully selected participants invited to provide complementary expertise from a variety of relevant disciplines. Through inten sive discussion in small groups they seek to reach a consensus on assessments and recommendations for future research emphasis, which it is hoped will be of value to the larger scientific community. The subjects treated over the past few years have been as varied as science itself-e.g., computer software engineering, chemical catalysis, and materials and energy research. The present effort evolved from informal discussions between marine geolo gists, chemists, and biologists which underlined the desirability of improved communication among those concerned with the benthic layer. In both scien tific and technological terms this is an exciting frontier, rich in promise but poorly understood at present. It is particularly striking to realize that there are at least as many definitions of the benthic layer as there are disciplines involved, and it seemed clear that there was much to be gained by a detailed exchange of views on research capabilities, trends, and priorities. The results of the meeting appear to have confirmed the hopes of the sponsors.
