Download or read book Misadventures in Tuscany written by David M. Addison and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David M. Addison provides a refreshing, alternative perspective in travel writing. A bit like Mr Bean on holiday, picking up the wrong piece of luggage at the airport is just the first in a series of misadventures which bedevil the author and his long-suffering wife on this ill-starred trip to Tuscany. From the lesser-known Lucca, which serves as the epicentre for his disasters, to Pisa and Florence, the author takes the reader not only on a hilarious journey, but also on one of discovery as he lurches from one crisis to the next. His frequently toe-curling account of his misadventures with the wrong bag is the link that blows like a gale of laughter throughout this narrative. Yet, for all his bungling, the author is surprisingly knowledgeable about the art, architecture and the history of Florence, Pisa and Lucca - places famous on the tourist map but what attracts his attention in these places is the weird amidst the wonderful, the curious and the quirky details that pass unnoticed by the majority of tourists. In addition to this, the author takes the reader off the beaten track to places most tourists never venture. There are frequent laugh-out-loud moments at his technophobia, his blunders, his brushes with officialdom and those who just happen to cross his path, who either amuse him, intrigue him or as often as not, provoke his irritation. A word of sympathy however, must be mentioned for his long-suffering wife and travelling companion who, amidst all this mayhem, is an innocent and unwitting accomplice.

Download or read book Sicily It s Not Quite Tuscany written by Shamus Sillar and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2012 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Packed with history, culture, misadventure, and a little Mafioso action, the story of a newly married couple and the year they spent in Sicily Gill and I had dreamt of living in Italy for as long as we'd been together. This is the story of an Aussie couple who sought a Mediterranean Sea change only to find themselves in the sprawling Sicilian city of Catania—the "anti-Tuscany" of Italy. There, any romantic visions they'd had of restoring a villa or stamping their entwined feet in vats of Chianti grapes disappeared faster than the chief witness in a Cosa Nostra trial. Shamus and Gill's tiny apartment in Catania was located in a grim neighborhood opposite a triple-X cinema and a shop selling coffins, nearby Mount Etna erupted soon after their arrival, a mystery ailment left Shamus in a neck brace, they crashed a Vespa, and they had regular dealings with at least one Mafioso. This, then, is an Italian sea change with grit. But it's also a story of optimism, endurance, and acceptance; an exploration of the minutiae of Sicilian culture, history, food, and religion; and an example of how to find beauty—and humor—in the most unexpected of places.
Download or read book My Italian Bulldozer written by Alexander McCall Smith and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best-selling author of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series returns with an irresistible new novel about one man’s adventures in the Italian countryside. Paul Stuart, a renowned food writer, finds himself at loose ends after his longtime girlfriend leaves him for her personal trainer. To cheer him up, Paul’s editor, Gloria, encourages him to finish his latest cookbook on-site in Tuscany, hoping that a change of scenery (plus the occasional truffled pasta and glass of red wine) will offer a cure for both heartache and writer’s block. But upon Paul’s arrival, things don’t quite go as planned. A mishap with his rental-car reservation leaves him stranded, until a newfound friend leads him to an intriguing alternative: a bulldozer. With little choice in the matter, Paul accepts the offer, and as he journeys (well, slowly trundles) into the idyllic hillside town of Montalcino, he discovers that the bulldozer may be the least of the surprises that await him. What follows is a delightful romp through the lush sights and flavors of the Tuscan countryside, as Paul encounters a rich cast of characters, including a young American woman who awakens in him something unexpected. A feast for the senses and a poignant meditation on the complexity of human relationships, My Italian Bulldozer is a charming and intensely satisfying love story for anyone who has ever dreamed of a fresh start.
Download or read book An Innocent Abroad written by David M. Addison and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, in 1978, as a participant in a teacher exchange programme, the author, accompanied by his wife and young family, exchanged his boring existence in Grangemouth in central Scotland for life in Missoula, Montana, in the western United Sates, he could not have foreseen just how much of a life-changing experience it would be not just for him and his family, but for his exchangee as well. He was prepared for a less formal atmosphere in the classroom, while, for their part, his students had been warned that he would be Mr Strict. It was not long before this clash of cultures reared its ugly head and the author found himself in big trouble. But, as he had found out from the very instant he arrived on the continent, just because we share a common language it doesnt mean Americans do things the same way. And the Montanans, he was to discover, do things more differently still. There were times, in the beginning, when he wished he had stayed at home in his boring but safe existence in Scotland and there were times when life got more than just a little bit too exciting for comfort. But mainly this is a heart- warming and humorous tale of how this Innocent abroad, confronted with one culture shock after another, overcame his trials and tribulations and thanks to a whole array of colourful and kind people, finally came to realise that this exchange was the best thing he had ever done.

Download or read book Ah Tuscany written by Don McPherson and published by Ah! Tuscany. This book was released on 2006-11-03 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AUTHORs REVIEW and COMMENTS on Ah! Tuscany : the Enlightenment of an ExpatraiteFive years ago my wife - Silvia - and I purchased a condominium in San Gimignano. This book is my story of what followed. Unlike most books, there is no obvious story line throughout - and this presented me with the challenge of leaving the reader with what at the end coalesces into a complete story. There are however, two shorter story lines. The first is: locating, purchasing, improving, and furnishing an apartment near San Gimignano and the second - woven throughtout the book - concerns obtaining our permission to live in Italy, official residency, car ownership and registration, Carta di Soggiorno, citizenship, and documents for a stolen car.Otherwise the book is a mosaic of personal experiences and observations that encompass our living experience and in the end it becomes clear that the real story is about getting to know the customs and people sufficiently that we felt truly at home in San Gimignano. For example, I describe shops, restaurants, a visit to the mayors office, the grape harvest and wine making, olive harvest and mushroom hunt and interactions with workmen (our artisans). I take the reader traveling to Volterra, Florence, Siena, Certaldo and Poggibonsi and Tuscan villages. We go cycling, take country walks and become acquainted with ancient books, the art scene, sunsets and winter in San Gimignano. I describe money laundering, medical sevices, doctor visits, pharmacies and the payment or avoidance of taxes. We learn several difficult lessons concerning government-controlled services: utilities, banks, telephone, post, computer connection, water and traffic violations. We learn the importance of notaries and town registrar (anagrafe), I make observations on politics, TV, strikes and the press, on All Saints Day, barbers, how a condominium functions, and festivals. During the entire process, we develop valued friendships and transition from outsiders to residents who truly belong to San Gimignano. There is a separate chapter on the special issue of Tuscan Way of Life, [the strange dichotomy of aggressive governance vs beautiful life style and wonderfully warm, friendly people] and another on the history of San Gimignano. My Target Audience comprises two groups: those who enjoy reading about life in Italy particularly Tuscany - and those adventurers who are either considering living in Italy or actually doing so. Both groups, and indeed all readers who enjoy travel will be entertained by many humorous and sometimes hilarious events surrounding the mysterious bureaucratic machinations of government, while those thinking of living there may better prepare themselves for the adventure. But all readers are sure to enjoy the pleasures of Tuscan friendliness, culture and customs. The living of this story has been an experience of a lifetime. From friends and unknown readers alike, I receive reports of pleasure, enjoyment and amazement. I therefore recommend the book to you and wish that many more will decide to share in my story.Don McPhersonclick to get published: http://outskirtspress.com/cgi/agent.cgi?key=22944

Download or read book The Cuban Missus Crisis written by David M. Addison and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this humorous travelogue round Cuba, the hapless author suffers from both urban myths and his Missus (aka the Drinks Police). The first he debunks as they occur; the crises his Missus causes, or would have caused but for his timely intervention, are a more serious matter. Acutely aware that Cuba is certain to change in the near future and probably radically, award-winning author David M. Addison was anxious to experience the country as it is now, under communism and Castro. Apart from describing what daily life is like for ordinary Cubans, he also delves into Cubas past from the original inhabitants and post-Columbian conquest to the Wars of Independence and the Bay of Pigs and its aftermath. On the literary trail, Addison pays homage to Hemingway as he follows in his footsteps. And if that should necessitate a visit to a bar or two, that cant be helped. Its not a lame excuse for a bar crawl despite what the Drinks Police may think. It goes without saying that in Cuba you cant avoid classic cars and cigars but the author also takes a close look at Cubas art and architecture, flora and fauna and not least, the countrys other most famous product rum. Another cause for a crisis as far as the Missus is concerned. A mine on all aspects of Cuban culture both past and present, this is useful background reading for anyone intending a visit to Cuba as well as being a handy accompaniment to your guidebook when you go. Or, if armchair travelling is more your thing, pour yourself a glass of rum or mix a mojito and learn and laugh your way round Cuba.

Download or read book Diary of a Mad Travel Writer written by Carolyn Walton and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Carolyn Walton, journalist and mother of four, pitched her first travel story to the Ottawa Citizen in 1984, recounting her adventures in Rio de Janeiro, little did she realize that she was about to embark on a remarkable career that would span the globe--taking her from the jungles of the Amazon to palaces in St. Petersburg, on a pilgrimage in France to ports on the Caribbean, Baltic, Mediterranean, Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas, the Adriatic, North and South Pacific oceans. Prepare to be enlightened and entertained as you tread the path less taken to swim with deadly stingrays in Tahiti, kayak among bulbous- headed belugas in Hudson Bay or deep-sea dive through schools of phosphorescent groupers off Andros Island in the Bahamas. Lapland finds her a guest of the colourful Sami people, dining high above the Arctic Circle on smoked reindeer meat or drinking boiled billy tea by the billabong in Australia’s Outback and truffle hunting in Italy or learning to cook per gli stuzzicini from a famed Italian chef in la cucina of a 1000-year-old castello in Tuscany. The old adage: “Half the fun is getting there” just doesn’t compute when Carolyn’s much anticipated flight to Paris is politically- interrupted or a transfer to the wrong boat in the South Pacific leaves her abandoned on a Fijian island! This collection of tales and misadventures takes the travel lover on an engaging and often humorous journey to the heart of some sixty bucket list destinations around the globe.
Download or read book Confessions of a Banffshire Loon written by David M. Addison and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales of sex and violence, mystery, murder and yes, even romance, abound in this sweeping saga as the reader is transported from the late seventeenth century to the mid twentieth when the self-confessed bad boy from the boondocks left school to make his own way in the world. The canvas stretches from Banffshire in the North East of Scotland to Blyth in the North East of England, from the Middle East to North America and Australia. In this journey of discovery, the author uncovers some shocking stories and others so amazing they would be dismissed as too fanciful for a work of fiction. You will find a good number of tragic tales that will sadden you but they are leavened by a great many others that will also gladden your heart.
Download or read book Cooking with Fernet Branca written by James Hamilton-Paterson and published by Europa Editions. This book was released on 2005-09-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A very funny sendup of Italian-cooking-holiday-romance novels” (Publishers Weekly). Gerald Samper, an effete English snob, has his own private hilltop in Tuscany where he whiles away his time working as a ghostwriter for celebrities and inventing wholly original culinary concoctions––including ice cream made with garlic and the bitter, herb-based liqueur known as Fernet Branca. But Gerald’s idyll is about to be shattered by the arrival of Marta, on the run from a crime-riddled former Soviet republic, as a series of misunderstandings brings this odd couple into ever closer and more disastrous proximity . . . “Provokes the sort of indecorous involuntary laughter that has more in common with sneezing than chuckling. Imagine a British John Waters crossed with David Sedaris.” —The New York Times
