Download or read book A Gringa in Bogot written by June Carolyn Erlick and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many foreigners, Colombia is a nightmare of drugs and violence. Yet normal life goes on there, and, in Bogotá, it's even possible to forget that war still ravages the countryside. This paradox of perceptions—outsiders' fears versus insiders' realities—drew June Carolyn Erlick back to Bogotá for a year's stay in 2005. She wanted to understand how the city she first came to love in 1975 has made such strides toward building a peaceful civil society in the midst of ongoing violence. The complex reality she found comes to life in this compelling memoir. Erlick creates her portrait of Bogotá through a series of vivid vignettes that cover many aspects of city life. As an experienced journalist, she lets the things she observes lead her to larger conclusions. The courtesy of people on buses, the absence of packs of stray dogs and street trash, and the willingness of strangers to help her cross an overpass when vertigo overwhelms her all become signs of convivencia—the desire of Bogotanos to live together in harmony despite decades of war. But as Erlick settles further into city life, she finds that "war in the city is invisible, but constantly present in subtle ways, almost like the constant mist that used to drip down from the Bogotá skies so many years ago." Shattering stereotypes with its lively reporting, A Gringa in Bogotá is must-reading for going beyond the headlines about the drug war and bloody conflict.

  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Alejandro Xul Solar written by Mario H. Gradowczyk and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 1996 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-scale study of the life and work of Argentine artist Xul Solar (1887-1963), who was born Oscar Agustin Alejandro Schulz Solari in Buenos Aires. A gregarious eccentric, Xul Solar played a prominent role in the Argentine avant-garde of the 1920s, which included Jorge Luis Borges and such visiting luminaries as Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, the Italian Futurist leader. Xul Solar went on to create a number of interrelated verbal and visual languages that expressed his identity as an Argentine/Latin American artist as well as a utopian desire for universal brotherhood. Xul Solar left Argentina in 1911 on his way to the Far East, but he went only as far as Europe, where he remained for twelve years. There he absorbed modernist ideas - Symbolism, Expressionism, and Constructivism - and distilled them in a mixture of wit and whimsy. Xul Solar's first exhibition in Europe was held in Milan in 1910; he returned to Buenos Aires in 1924. By 1918 he had formulated a system of pictorial writing called neocriollo (Neo-Creole), designed to be understood all over Latin America. Xul Solar continued to study languages throughout his life, along with philosophy, astrology, Asian religions, and mysticism, and all of these were reflected in his art. His later works included visionary architectural projects and paintings composed mainly of messages.

Book excerpt: This vivid exposé of corruption and political tyranny in the Dominican Republic rang so true to the reality that the President of that country went on television to denounce the book.
