Book excerpt: "This anthology of personal essays from around the globe demystifies the individual significance of the veil by taking you inside the hearts and minds of those who have experienced it first hand. How do different societies relate to a veiled woman? Can covering the hair be an act of defiance and empowerment? Can the veil be seen as an expression of one's own sensuality? Part academic and part confessional, the stories inside help answer these questions by moving beyond the religious significance attached to this controversial stretch of fabric. Instead they explore the psychological, sociological and spiritual implications of veiling, giving voice to men and women of varied religious and cultural backgrounds who have been touched by the veil." -- Back cover.

Book excerpt: The Islamic headscarf has become the subject of heated legal and political debate. France and Germany have legislated against it, and even the UK, long a champion of multiculturalism, has recently restricted the veil proper. Ever since home-grown Islamic terrorism struck Europe, these debates have become even more prominent, impassioned and wide-ranging, with vital global importance. In this concise and beautifully written introduction to the politics of the veil in modern societies, Christian Joppke examines why a piece of clothing could have led to such controversy. He dissects the multiple meanings of the Islamic headscarf, and explores its links with the global rise of Islam, Muslim integration, and the retreat from multiculturalism. He argues that the headscarf functions as a mirror of identity, but one in which national and liberal identities overlap, exposing the paradox that while it may be an affront to liberal values, its suppression is equally illiberal. Veil: Mirror of Identity will illuminate, challenge and provoke readers, and will make compelling reading for scholars, students and general readers alike.

An unbelievably believable story about the afterlife, with documenting photographs from the former publisher of a major metropolitan newspaper. In 2004, Janis Heaphy Durham's husband, Max Besler, died of cancer at age 56. The daughter of a Presbyterian minister, she practiced her faith as she struggled with her loss. Soon she began encountering phenomena unlike anything she'd ever experienced: lights flickering, doors opening and closing, clocks stopping at 12:44, the exact time of Max's death. But then something startling happened that changed Heaphy Durham's life forever. A powdery handprint appeared on her bathroom mirror on the first anniversary of Max's death. This launched Heaphy Durham on a journey that transformed her spiritually and altered her view of reality forever. She interviewed scientists and spiritual practitioners along the way, as she discovered that the veil between this world and the next is thin and it's love that bridges the two worlds.

Book excerpt: Spenser not only dedicated The FAerie Queene to Queen Elizabeth but asserted that his romantic epic was in some sense about her rule and her realm. The informed attention that O'Connell gives to the relationship between Spenser's reflections on contemporary history and his moral design makes this volume a convincing reading of the great poem. The author shows how Spenser used Vergil as his model in celebrating and judging his own age. Originally published in 1977. Book The Holy Veil of Manoppello

Download or read book The Holy Veil of Manoppello written by Paul Badde and published by Sophia Institute Press. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The horrific 1915 earthquake that leveled tiny Manoppello, Italy, brought forth from the local church’s rubble one of Christendom’s long-lost, but most precious relics: the small cloth that lay on Jesus’s face in the tomb. Saint John speaks of it in his Gospel: “When Peter went into the tomb, he saw linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself.” Tradition says that Our Lady herself laid this cloth on His face before He was wrapped in His shroud for burial. This small veil — now known as the Holy Face of Manoppello — absorbed the very first new breath of the Risen Christ . . . and at that same instant had imprinted on itself, miraculously, a vivid image of the now-resurrected Jesus. Modern scholars have confirmed that this image corresponds perfectly in all its measurements to the face of the dead Christ on the more famous Shroud of Turin. Unlike the Shroud, however, the Holy Face of Manoppello shows not the grim visage of a dead man with eyes closed, but the lively face of the living Christ, His eyes wide open, piercing us with their gaze. In 2006, Pope Benedict made a pilgrimage to Manoppello to pray before this image. In the decade since then, tens of thousands of other pilgrims have followed in the Pope’s footsteps, making the trek to central Italy to meet Jesus face-to-face. Now, thanks to author Paul Badde you can learn of the loss and recovery of this precious relic. Better yet, by means of the dozens of color pictures in this book, you, too, can encounter this miraculous cloth, and finally gaze reverently on the face of the living Christ Himself!

Book excerpt: By an author described by critics as 'the most accomplished Malaysian writer, full stop'. Lake Like a Mirror is a scintillating exploration of the lives of women buffeted by powers beyond their control. Squeezing themselves between the gaps of rabid urbanisation, patriarchal structures and a theocratic government, these women find their lives twisted in disturbing ways. In precise and disquieting prose, Ho Sok Fong draws her readers into a richly atmospheric world of naked sleepwalkers in a rehabilitation centre for wayward Muslims, mysterious wooden boxes, gossip in unlicensed hairdressers, hotels with amnesiac guests, and poetry classes with accidentally charged politics - a world that is peopled with the ghosts of unsaid words, unmanaged desires and uncertain statuses, surreal and utterly true.

Book Piercing the Veil Through the Hall of Mirrors

Download or read book Piercing the Veil Through the Hall of Mirrors written by Christopher . M. Morris and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a youth I was plagued with the question, why? What was the reason behind it all? I have thought long about nature of life and have read many great books. Of all the books I read none intrigued me more than The Revelation of Jesus Christ. It is a short book, and yet always left me staggering with bewilderment. I understand today that the symbolism employed in its text is meant to convey a multiplicity of narratives. However, in my studies it seemed that some interpretations could not be rectified with others. As I delved into the symbolism of Jewish, Greek and Egyptian culture, I was astonished with the tapestry of stories it conveyed. Though exotic in its approach and descriptive style from the rest of the New Testament, I concede that the book of Revelation is a work of inspired Beauty. There is no way that I can improve on such a work. To attempt as much would be to bring the plagues it speaks of upon myself and deny the growth of further enlightenment. Therefore, what is read in the following is simply an attempt to parse my own understanding of its teaching. It is not a substitute or addendum, but an arrangement of ideas that I might define what I do not comprehend and apply what is deemed natural. My aim is to distill the vast subjects it presents into a starting place. To illuminate the steppingstones of a working faith. The Revealing of Christ seems to be a reply, based on keen observation and passed down from Our ancestors, to those who would be so bold as to ask, why?

Book excerpt: For as long as he can remember, Blake K. Healy has seen angels and demons. He sees them as clearly as he would see you if you were standing right in front of him. He sees angels dancing in worship services and whispering words of encouragement in people’s ears. He also sees demons latching on to people and perpetuating addiction and bitterness in their hearts. The Veil chronicles how Blake matured in this gifting, while overcoming the fear and confusion of what he saw, how he learned to use his gift of seeing for God’s glory, and how to teach others to do the same. This new and updated version of The Veil also includes a brief guide on how to begin growing in the gift of seeing in the spirit yourself, as well as an appendix of scriptural references to the spirit realm and angels, along with Blake’s commentary on these passages.

Book The Leader in the Mirror

Book excerpt: How do you know if your leadership is transformational or if it's fleeting? Does a great speech or a large following mean that someone is transformational? What kind of leader are YOU? Businesses, economies, families, systems fail daily from a lack of or misguided leadership. It can be changed. It starts with the leader you see every morning in the mirror. In The Leader in the Mirror, Eric Powell defines differing types of leadership, presents how they impact our culture, and helps you see what barriers are preventing you from being the leader God created you to be. Using Nehemiah as a leadership model, this book uses biblical structure, personal testimony, and real business and political examples to demonstrate the gaps in our instant gratification culture and offers solutions that you, the leader in the mirror, can employ to close those gaps. God offers a second chance to get on one accord with His purpose for your life. Will the leader in the mirror take that chance?
