This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles and Modern Spiritualism I am well aware that my scientific friends are some what puzzled to account for what they consider to be my delusion, and believe that it has injuriously affected what ever power I may have once possessed of dealing with the philosophy of Natural History. One of them - Mr. Anton Dohrn - has expressed this plainly. I am informed that, in an article entitled Englische Kritiker und Anti Kritiker des Darwinismus, published in 1861, he has put forth the opinion that Spiritualism and Natural Selection are incompatible, and that my divergence from the views of Mr. Darwin arises from my belief in Spiritualism. He also supposes that in accepting the spiritual doctrines I have been to some extent influenced by clerical and reli gions prejudice. As Mr. Dohrn's views may be those of other scientific friends, I may perhaps be excused for entering into some personal details in reply. This book was released on 2016-08-27 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nineteenth Century Miracles, or Spirits and Their Work in Every Country of the Earth: A Complete Historical Compendium of the Great Movement Known as "Modern Spiritualism" That fraudulent manifestations have been given, and in many instances publicly represented as proceeding from spirits, *none can deny; but the question of how to discern the true from the false, is of the most vital importance, especially to a writer, whose sole aim is to present a worthy record of a sublime truth, yet to free it from all the misrepresentation which would render such a record valueless. The chief obstacles-v which intervene between this purpose and its accomplishment, are the manifestations of partisan spirit, which find their readiest sphere of representation in the columns of the spiritual journals. One set of writers determinately upholds every asserted claim to medium' ship, however imsy, and hurls denunciation against every individual who either presumes to question the validity of that claim, or draws attention to the most palpable evidence of imposture. This injurious spirit of credulity, so often mistaken by the world for complicity with the impostor, is met on the other hand by equally violent denunciation of all which the denouncer cannot himself fully apprehend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles and Modern Spiritualism "A presumption scepticism that reject facts without examination of their truth, is, in some respects, more injurious than unquestioning credulity." Humboldt. "One good experiment is of more value than the ingenuity of a brain like Newtons. Facts are more useful when they contradict, than when they support, received theories." - Sir Humphry Davy. "The perfect observer in any department of science will have his eyes, as it were, opened, that they may he struck at once by any occurrence which, according to received theories, ought not to happen, for these are the facts which serve as clues to new discoveries." Sir John Herschell. "Before experience itself can be used with advantage, there is one preliminary step to make which depends wholly on ourselves: it is, the absolute dismissal and clearing the mind of all prejudice, and the determination to stand or fall by the result of a direct appeal to facts in the first instance, and of strict logical deduction from them afterwards." - Sir John Herschell. "With regard to the miracle question, I can only say that the word 'impossible' is not, to my mind, applicable to matters of philosophy. That the possibilities of nature are infinite is an aphorism with which I am wont to worry my friends." - Professor Huxley. Download or read book Miracles in Modern Life Classic Reprint written by John Lamond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles in Modern Life But if Official Science has turned the blind eye on Spiritualism what is to be said as regards the attitude maintained by the Christian Church for this is a subject that primarily concerns the Church? That scientific evidence can be produced to prove that there is a future life and a future world, and that a measure Of communication can be maintained between the two worlds is a fact that ought to be Of interest to every Christian man and woman. It is upon these central facts that the Christian faith has been built. The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ is regarded as the key-stone in the arch Of the Christian faith. Spiritualism alone can explain the Resurrection Of Jesus which otherwise would remain an isolated fact in human experience. On this all-important matter F. W. H. Myers truly wrote - I venture now upon a bold saying: for I predict that in consequence Of the new evidence, all reasonable men a century hence will believe in the Resurrection of Christ, whereas, in default Of the new evidence no reasonable man, a century hence, would have believed it. A DEFENCE OF MODERN SPIRITUALISM/ (reprinted With Notes And Additions From The "Fobtniohtlt Review.") It is with great diffidence, but under an imperative sense of duty, that the present writer accepts the opportunity afforded him of submitting to the readers of the Fortnightly Eeview some general account of a wide-spread movement, which, though for the most part treated with ridicule or contempt, he believes to embody truths of the most vital importance to human progress. The subject to be treated is of such vast extent; the evidence concerning it is so varied and so extraordinary; the prejudices that surround it are so inveterate, that it is not possible to do it justice without entering into considerable detail. The reader who ventures on the perusal of the succeeding pages may, therefore, have his patience tried; but if he is able to throw aside his preconceived ideas of what is possible and what is impossible, and in the acceptance or rejection of what is submitted to him will carefully weigh * The following are the more important works which have been used in the preparation of this article: --Judge Edmond's "Spiritual Tracts," New York, 1858--1860. Book On Miracles and Modern Spiritualism

Download or read book On Miracles and Modern Spiritualism written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth-century British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace was a major influence on Darwin's theory of natural selection. He was later moved by a variety of personal experiences to examine the concept of spirituality, but his exploration into the potential for compatibility between spiritualism and natural selection alienated him from the scientific community. The three controversial essays in this 1875 book attempt to reinforce his beliefs and validate his claims. The first, written in 1871 and read before The Dialectic Society, reconsiders the credibility or incredibility of miracles. The second, 'The Scientific Aspect of the Supernatural', had been published in a secularist periodical several years earlier, and 'A Defence of Modern Spiritualism' appeared in the Fortnightly Review shortly before this book was published. Wallace's book takes the modern reader to the heart of the raging debates engendered by Darwin, many of which continue over a century later.
