Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores, in a manner that is readily accessible to those with little or no formal training in philosophy or theology, important questions concerning the rationality of belief in miracles. This book employs the time-honored literary device of dialogue, a practice that dates as far back as Plato. Done well, this form of philosophical investigation puts forward a thesis, yet genuinely engages with the views its author opposes. These dialogues are intended to provide a philosophical defense of the possibility of rationally justified belief in miracles. Such a defense can legitimately dispense with much of the paraphernalia that professional scholars in a discipline use in writing for other professional scholars in their discipline--some scholarly texts seem to be more references than argument--but it must not "dumb down" the material by oversimplifying the issues, or presenting "straw man" versions of the arguments it seeks to refute. My hope is that not only those who are already convinced of the rationality of belief in miracles will read this book, but also those who are unconvinced.

Book One Clear Call

Download or read book One Clear Call written by David Murray and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-08 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your worst fear has been realized: your only son has died suddenly. Through a painful inversion of life's circle, you have outlived your child. How can you go on? What do you do? Who knows the way you should take? One Clear Call describes David Murray's close bond with his son, and concludes with a pilgrimage into the hidden chambers of parental bereavement. While on that journey, the author is arrested by "one clear call" and confronted with a heavenly reality that highlights a road less traveled. This book offers a revealing snapshot of God's calling and election. If you have lost a child or a close loved one, you will be inspired by this account of how one father found the consolations of God to be real and substantial. Wherever you may be in your bereavement journey, you will certainly find a way station of hope and courage somewhere in these pages.

Book The Jihad of Jesus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dave Andrews
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2015-05-29
  • ISBN : 1498217745
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book The Jihad of Jesus written by Dave Andrews and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are caught up in the cycle of so-called "holy wars." In The Jihad of Jesus, Dave Andrews argues that while this inter-communal conflict is endemic, it is not inevitable. Depending on our understanding, our religions can be either a source of escalating conflict or a resource for overcoming inter-communal conflict; and for our religions to be a resource for overcoming conflict, we need to understand the heart of all true religion as open-hearted compassionate spirituality. In the light of an open-hearted compassionate spirituality, we can reclaim the word "jihad" from extremists who have (mis)appropriated it as a call to "holy war," and reframe it, in truly Qur'anic terms, as a "sacred nonviolent struggle for justice"; and we can reconsider Jesus, as he is in the Gospels, not as a poster boy for Christians fighting crusades against Muslims, but as "a strong-but-gentle Messianic figure" who can bring Christians and Muslims together. As this book shows, many Christians and Muslims have found Isa (Jesus) and the Bismillah (celebrating the mercy, grace, and compassion of God) as common ground upon which they can stand and work for the common good. The Jihad of Jesus is a handbook for reconciliation and action: a do-it-yourself guide for all Christians and Muslims who want to move beyond the "clash of civilizations," join the jihad of Jesus, and struggle for justice and peace nonviolently side by side.

Book excerpt: The average life expectancy of a male New Zealander is 76 years, leaving the few average male New Zealanders interested in the World Cup Finals just 18 tournaments to savour. It still gnaws frustratingly that my first three - the 1966, 1970 and 1974 tournaments - were played while I was alive but somehow managed to elude me. I also doubt whether...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ preached a gospel of love and peace with justice. But the history of the Christian religion is littered with every kind of evil. What went wrong? How have we become a generation that is seeking God but rejecting organized religion? How can we rediscover the authentic message of Jesus? This challenging book explores the reasons behind the atrocities committed in the name of Christ. It offers the vision of Jesus as a source of radical renewal of individuals and societies. Author of the acclaimed Plan Be Series, Dave Andrews shows how we can be inspired by the model of Jesus' compassion, and his hunger for justice, to work with marginal groups for real transformation in our world.

Book Wovoka and the Ghost Dance

Download or read book Wovoka and the Ghost Dance written by Don Lynch and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religious fervor known as the Ghost Dance movement was precipitated by the prophecies and teachings of a northern Paiute Indian named Wovoka (Jack Wilson). During a solar eclipse on New Year’s Day, 1889, Wovoka experienced a revelation that promised harmony, rebirth, and freedom for Native Americans through the repeated performance of the traditional Ghost Dance. In 1890 his message spread rapidly among tribes, developing an intensity that alarmed the federal government and ended in tragedy at Wounded Knee. While the Ghost Dance phenomenon is well known, never before has its founder received such full and authoritative treatment. Indispensable for understanding the prophet behind the messianic movement, Wovoka and the Ghost Dance addresses for the first time basic questions about his message and This expanded edition includes a new chapter and appendices covering sources on Wovoka discovered since the first edition, as well as a supplemental bibliography.
