A miracle is inexplicable by the methods of science and thus deemed impossible. I examine the concept of impossibility with primary reference to David Hume’s notion that there is a boundary of probability beyond which the improbable becomes the impossible, calculated at 10150. Physicists have declared that the universe is inevitable and, at the same time, impossible. Its inevitability is obvious, but the mind-boggling improbability that a biocentric universe exists vastly exceeds the probability boundary. If a miracle is defined as an impossibility, the universe is a miracle. The origin of life is just as miraculously impossible because the probability of dead organic molecules evolving into the organic molecules of life is even less than it is for the existence of the universe. ... r> This book also looks at what the Resurrection means in terms of the atonement and the concepts of hell and universal salvation. This is followed by an examination of the evidence for the Resurrection and historical and archaeological reasons for trusting the New Testament. Secular explanations of the Resurrection are examined and pitted against the Christian account in terms of their explanatory scope and power. The last two chapters look at the “silent witness” to the resurrection, the Shroud of Turin bearing the image of a terribly tortured and crucified man. For 125 years, scientists have been unable to discover how the image was imprinted on the cloth; thus, I conclude that it is the “silent witness” to the Resurrection—the authentic Shroud of Jesus Christ.

They were descendants of Japan's first Christians, the survivors of brutal religious persecution under the Tokugawa government. The Kakure Kirishitan, or "hidden Christians," had practiced their religion in secret for several hundred years. Sometime after their visit the priest received a copy of the Kakure bible, the Tenchi Hajimari no Koto, "Beginning of Heaven and Earth," an intriguing amalgam of Bible stories, Japanese fables, and Roman Catholic doctrine. Whelan offers a complete translation of this unique work accompanied by an illuminating commentary that provides the first theory of origin and evolution of the Tenchi. Today, the few Kakure Kirishitan communities still in existence view the Tenchi as strange and flawed, expressing a distorted form of Christianity. It is, however, the only text produced by the Kakure Kirishitan that depicts their highly syncretistic tradition and provides a colorful window through which to examine the dynamics of religious acculturation.

Or surviving car wrecks when the cars were totaled and there were no seat belts then. He graduated from NHS in 1960 in a class of 56, so you knew everyone and everyone knew you and your business. You didn’t do anything without the whole town finding out very quickly what happened. So, when he broke the taillight in his Dad’s car, Dad knew about it before he got home. Or, when he drove that same car and took his girl friend all the way to Columbus to the Kahiki Supper Club for dinner one time, and, ruined his older brother’s white sport coat and Tanya’s new dress when an orange fountain exploded while they waited in the Kahiki’s crowded lobby, somehow people knew about the incident by the time they got back to Nelsonville. They quickly told a story to their friends first, then their parents, that some kid sprayed orange soda all over them at the high school dance that evening. And the best part of that adventure was, that the dinner was free if they didn’t take the free dry cleaning offer from the Kahiki. That is the way small towns were back then. Walt went on to work his way through Ohio University and eventually earned three degrees from there and a Master’s Degree from the University of Dayton in 1980. Walt’s adventures after finishing High School in 1960, like Ohio University, the party school, Western Electric in Columbus, and the Army and Vietnam, are in his next book, The Second Eighteen Plus.
