Book excerpt: Adam Tiller is a sixty-three-year-old author of detective/crime novels; several of which had become bestsellers. He attained great fame and fortune, but remained restless and unfulfilled. As he deals with the death of his wife after thirty unhappy years of marriage, Adam decides that he has to get away. He is bored with writing novels in his particular genre, and dreams of creating something new and refreshing for both himself and his readers. In response to an advertisement in a travel magazine, he decides to leave his plush Manhattan apartment and head to the northwoods of Wisconsin. He signs a lease to rent a log cabin on Mirror Lake, where he plans to spend four months in the hope of writing a story that can mean something on a more personal level. He could never have imagined the incredible secret hidden in Mirror Lake, as well as the remarkable things associated with it. While fishing on the lake one day, Adam encounters an enchanting creature that helps him when he was in trouble, and then introduces him to a strange new world that could change him forever; should he decide to become part of it. At Mirror Lake he is given a second chance in life, but only time will tell if he uses this once in a lifetime experience to live a happier and more fulfilling life.

Book excerpt: Linear Methods: A General Education Course is expressly written for non-mathematical students, particularly freshmen taking a required core mathematics course. Rather than covering a hodgepodge of different topics as is typical for a core mathematics course, this text encourages students to explore one particular branch of mathematics, elementary linear algebra, in some depth. The material is presented in an accessible manner, as opposed to a traditional overly rigorous approach. While introducing students to useful topics in linear algebra, the book also includes a gentle introduction to more abstract facets of the subject. Many relevant uses of linear algebra in today’s world are illustrated, including applications involving business, economics, elementary graph theory, Markov chains, linear regression and least-squares polynomials, geometric transformations, and elementary physics. The authors have included proofs of various important elementary theorems and properties which provide readers with the reasoning behind these results. Features: Written for a general education core course in introductory mathematics Introduces elementary linear algebra concepts to non-mathematics majors Provides an informal introduction to elementary proofs involving matrices and vectors Includes useful applications from linear algebra related to business, graph theory, regression, and elementary physics Authors Bio: David Hecker is a Professor of Mathematics at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University and has published several journal articles. He also co-authored several editions of Elementary Linear Algebra with Stephen Andrilli. Stephen Andrilli is a Professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at La Salle University in Philadelphia. Book excerpt: They swear they’re not right for each other but the matchmakers of Highland Falls are out to prove them wrong. Elliana MacLeod has come home to whip the Mirror Lake Inn into tip-top shape, the only way to prevent her mother from selling the beloved family business. In between watching over mischievous, cigar-sneaking Grandpa Joe and trying to help Highland Falls win the Most Romantic Small Town in America contest, Elliana’s plate isn’t just full, it’s overflowing. She can’t refuse Nathan Black’s offer to fix up the inn, even if the gorgeous law enforcement officer has made it abundantly clear he considers her a friend, and nothing more. Nate knows he’s not cut out for long-term relationships or white picket fences, and that’s what Ellie deserves. Yet keeping her at arm’s length is nearly impossible, especially once they’re working—and living—side-by-side. The more time he spends with Ellie, the more he wants, and not just for today but forever. When Ellie’s ex returns to town, has Nate missed his chance with the woman of his dreams?

Book A Lady s Life in the Rocky Mountains

Download or read book A Lady s Life in the Rocky Mountains written by Isabella L. Bird and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains (1879) is a work of travel literature by British explorer Isabella Bird. Adventurous from a young age, Bird gained a reputation as a writer and photographer interested in nature and the stories and cultures of people around the world. A bestselling author and the first woman inducted into the Royal Geographical Society, Bird is recognized today as a pioneering woman whose contributions to travel writing, exploration, and philanthropy are immeasurable. In 1872—after a year of sailing from Britain to Australia and Hawaii—Isabella Bird journeyed by boat to San Francisco before making her way over land through California and Wyoming to the Colorado Territory. There, she befriended an outdoorsman named Rocky Mountain Jim, who guided her throughout the vast wilderness of Colorado and accompanied her during a journey of over 800 miles. Traveling on foot and on horseback—Bird was an experienced and skillful rider—the two formed a curious but formidable pair, eventually reaching the 14,259 foot (4346 m) summit of Longs Peak, making Bird one of the first women to accomplish the feat. A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains, Bird’s most iconic work, was a bestseller upon publication, and has since inspired generations of readers. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Isabella Bird’s A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains is a classic of American literature and travel writing reimagined for modern readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains is a travel book, by Isabella Bird, describing her 1873 trip to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The book is a compilation of letters that Isabella Bird wrote to her sister, Henrietta. In 1872, Isabella left Britain, going first to Australia, then to Hawaii, which she refers to as the Sandwich Islands. In 1873 she travelled to Colorado, then the Colorado Territory. After living a time in Hawaii, she takes a boat, to San Francisco. She passed the area of Lake Tahoe, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to ultimate Estes Park, Colorado, also elsewhere in and near the Rocky Mountains of the Colorado Territory. Early in Colorado, she met Rocky Mountain Jim, described as a desperado, but with whom she got along quite well. She described him as, "He is a man whom any woman might love but no sane woman would marry." She was the first white woman to stand atop Longs Peak, Colorado, pointing out that Jim "dragged me up, like a bale of goods, by sheer force of muscle." Rocky Mountain Jim treated her quite well, and it is sad to note, he was shot to death, seven months later. After many other adventures, Isabella Bird ultimately took a train, east. Upon publication, A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains proved an "instant bestseller" and is still considered to be her best work.

Book The Post Industrial Landscape as Site for Creative Practice

Download or read book The Post Industrial Landscape as Site for Creative Practice written by Gwen Heeney and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together experts in the fields of art history, visual arts, music, cultural geography, curatorial practice and landscape architecture to explore the role of material memory in the post-industrial landscape and the ways in which that landscape can act as a site for many forms of creative practice. It examines the role of material memory in the siting of public artworks and politically inspired installation art within the socio-economic post-industrial landscape. The post-industrial ruin as a place for innovation in the curatorial process is also investigated, as are social memory and the complexities of inscribing memory into places. A number of chapters focus on photography and its important role in recording memory as transformation, abandonment and erosion. Artists and musicians present personal case studies examining the siting of permanent and temporary artworks which can invoke memory of both culture and place. The land itself and its associated histories of post-industry are explored in artistic terms investigating dislocation, wasted spaces and extinction. Landscape architects and cultural geographers explore the aesthetic of the urban ruin, its natural and human ecologies and the re-wilding of urban spaces. The volume provokes discussion by a group of diverse experts on a very contemporary subject.
