The book tells a story of many vicissitudes; of great achievements and of great failures. In this the history of the Diocese has much that corresponds with the history of the Province of Natal, with which indeed it is so closely interwoven. The coincidence of several civic and ecclesiastical Centenaries in recent years adds illustration to this fact. The Reverend B.B. Burnett undertook the writing of this volume as one of the commemorative projects of the Diocese Centenary of 1853-1953. The result is a uniquely nuanced account of a colonial society.
