Book excerpt: Despite the recent steps taken to curtail affirmative action and equal opportunity programs, the financial aid picture for African, Asian, Hispanic, and Native Americans has never looked brighter. Currently, billions of dollars are available, just for minorities. Don't miss out! Schlachter and Weber show you when, where, and how to get your share of this money in four new titles, each one focusing on a different ethnic group: Financial Aid for African Americans Financial Aid for Asian Americans Financial Aid for Hispanic Americans Financial Aid for Native Americans Each of these titles is crammed with details about scholarships, fellowships, grants, loans, awards, prizes, and internships set aside just for members of specific minority group members. Detailed program descriptions make it easy to determine if a funding opportunity is right for you: contact information (address, telephone, toll-free and fax numbers, e-mail, and web site), purpose, eligibility, financial data, duration, special features, limitations, number awarded, and deadline dates. Plus, in each volume, you'll find an annotated bibliography of key directories that identify even more financial aid opportunities and a set of indexes that let you search the directory listings by program title, sponsoring organizations, residency, tenability, subject, and application deadline. No other source offers the coverage provided by these titles. That's why Reference Books Bulletin called these directories landmark resources and selected them as the Editor's Choice. Each of the volumes in this set can be ordered separately

Book Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation

Download or read book Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-07-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order for the United States to maintain the global leadership and competitiveness in science and technology that are critical to achieving national goals, we must invest in research, encourage innovation, and grow a strong and talented science and technology workforce. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation explores the role of diversity in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce and its value in keeping America innovative and competitive. According to the book, the U.S. labor market is projected to grow faster in science and engineering than in any other sector in the coming years, making minority participation in STEM education at all levels a national priority. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation analyzes the rate of change and the challenges the nation currently faces in developing a strong and diverse workforce. Although minorities are the fastest growing segment of the population, they are underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering. Historically, there has been a strong connection between increasing educational attainment in the United States and the growth in and global leadership of the economy. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation suggests that the federal government, industry, and post-secondary institutions work collaboratively with K-12 schools and school systems to increase minority access to and demand for post-secondary STEM education and technical training. The book also identifies best practices and offers a comprehensive road map for increasing involvement of underrepresented minorities and improving the quality of their education. It offers recommendations that focus on academic and social support, institutional roles, teacher preparation, affordability and program development.

Book Increasing employment rates for ethnic minorities

Download or read book Increasing employment rates for ethnic minorities written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-02 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a significant gap between the employment rates of the ethnic minority and general populations - currently 14.2 percentage points. This gap costs the economy some £8.6 billion annually. During the last ten years there has been a slow but steady reduction of 2.8 percentage points in the gap. The Department for Work and Pensions (the Department) is responsible for helping people into employment, largely through a range of services provided by Jobcentre Plus offices across the country. It has a Public Service Agreement target to reduce significantly the ethnic minority employment gap over the three years to spring 2008. The Department is on course to meet this target. There have been a number of projects and programmes specifically targeted at ethnic minorities - ethnic minority outreach, ethnic minority flexible fund, specialist employment advisers, fair cities, partners outreach for ethnic minorities - as well as those aimed at the wider disadvantaged community, including the deprived areas fund and the city strategy. The NAO has not assessed the strategy in purely value for money terms, as there are wider benefits and social justice associated with success in this area. The Department has made progress, but the NAO believes greater continuity would have achieved more. A recent move away from a direct focus on ethnic minorities towards wider disadvantaged groups carries the risk that ethic minorities will not get the help that they need to gain employment.

Book Migrants and Minorities

Download or read book Migrants and Minorities written by Adam Luedtke and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-22 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe stands on the brink of a new era of diversity and immigration. Although many Europeans would prefer to ignore this fact, the signs are everywhere. Societies and politics are being irrevocably changed by their encounters with migrants, both recent and settled. This book pinpoints the specific trends and emerging patterns that allow us to understand what these changes mean for the future of Europe. On the ground level, institutions like schools and local governments have charted unique courses for dealing with diversity. And from above, the institutions of Brussels become ever more important for regulating the big picture. The passage of the Lisbon Treaty means that common EU rules on immigration will now be easier to achieve (and more likely). But what exact role is played by the institutions of the EU in Brussels, and how does this vary across policy areas? How are Europeans on all levels dealing with the sensitive questions raised by Islam, and how are migrants and minorities dealing with the hostility and xenophobia they routinely encounter? And finally, how have the experiences of different European countries in integrating their immigrants and minorities changed our comparative understanding of race, ethnicity and citizenship? These three sets of issues—EU-level regulations, Islam and Xenophobia, and comparative integration policy—are the topics that motivate and structure this book. Noted experts on each topic offer the latest research findings, which collectively advance our understanding of how Europe will deal with diversity in the 21st Century.

Book State of the World s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples 2009

Download or read book State of the World s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples 2009 written by Preti Taneja and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2009-07-16 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ Nelson Mandela Education for all is a goal that has been reaffirmed by states the world over many times in the last decade. It is meant to be achieved by 2015. But as this book clearly shows, a quality education is not reaching the world’s most vulnerable communities: minorities and indigenous peoples. In Central Africa, the great majority of indigenous Batwa and Baka have not had access even to primary education. In South Asia, Dalit girls are prevented from pursuing their education not just because of poverty, but through discrimination and sexual violence. In many countries in Europe, Roma children continue to be placed in segregated classes or in special schools for those with learning disabilities, just because of their ethnicity. In Latin America, millions of indigenous and African descendant children, instead of being in school, work in fields and plantations, in the mines, or at home.In a unique collaboration with UNICEF, Minority Rights Group International reports on what minority and indigenous children around the world face in their struggle to learn. State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples 2009 profiles the programmes that are being developed to help them – from better bilingual education to meeting the needs of nomadic populations – giving examples of what works and why. It describes efforts to overcome exclusion so that education is available, accessible, acceptable and adaptable for minorities and indigenous peoples, and shows how far there is still to go.It includes: - An analysis of available statistics that show that minorities and indigenous peoples are the most likely to suffer discrimination and exclusion in education worldwide. - First-hand accounts of the difficulties and challenges facing minority and indigenous children in every major world region. - Coverage of the key issues for promoting the right to education, including overcoming the double discrimination faced by minority and indigenous girls, the need to collect data by ethnicity, and the importance of bilingual or plurilingual education. - A unique statistical analysis and ranking of Peoples under Threat 2009. State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples is an invaluable reference for policy makers, academics, journalists and everyone who is interested in the conditions facing minorities and indigenous peoples around the world.
