Book The Odyssey in two volumes 2

Download or read book The Odyssey in two volumes 2 written by Homer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1919 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HOMER, The works assigned to Homer include the earliest and greatest European epic poems, but nothing is known of their Greek author (if not authors) unless it is that his country was Ionia in Asia Minor. To the ancients Homeric poetry at first was all the old epics, especially about Thebes and Troy; then 'Homer' was credited only with the Iliad and the Odyssey which we still have, and some minor poems of which we include Homeric Hymns in the volume containing Hesoid. The 24 books of the Iliad concern the 'anger of Achilles' during the war of the Greeks against Troy, extending from Achilles' quarrel with Agamemnon to the burial of Hector. The Odyssey presents the fortunes of Odysseus and his son Telamachus after the fall of Troy, and Odysseus' return home to Ithaca and his revenge on the rapacious suitors of his wife Penelope. It would require a book to list the work of scholarship done on these marvellous narratives of which part at least of the greatness can be suggested in translation.

Book excerpt: The great war epic of Western literature, in a stunning translation by acclaimed classicist Robert Fagles A Penguin Classic Dating to the ninth century B.C., Homer’s timeless poem still vividly conveys the horror and heroism of men and gods wrestling with towering emotions and battling amidst devastation and destruction, as it moves inexorably to the wrenching, tragic conclusion of the Trojan War. Renowned classicist Bernard Knox observes in his superb introduction that although the violence of the Iliad is grim and relentless, it coexists with both images of civilized life and a poignant yearning for peace. Combining the skills of a poet and scholar, Robert Fagles brings the energy of contemporary language to this enduring heroic epic. He maintains the drive and metric music of Homer’s poetry, and evokes the impact and nuance of the Iliad’s mesmerizing repeated phrases in what Peter Levi calls “an astonishing performance.” For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book The Cambridge Guide to Homer

Download or read book The Cambridge Guide to Homer written by Corinne Ondine Pache and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 974 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its ancient incarnation as a song to recent translations in modern languages, Homeric epic remains an abiding source of inspiration for both scholars and artists that transcends temporal and linguistic boundaries. The Cambridge Guide to Homer examines the influence and meaning of Homeric poetry from its earliest form as ancient Greek song to its current status in world literature, presenting the information in a synthetic manner that allows the reader to gain an understanding of the different strands of Homeric studies. The volume is structured around three main themes: Homeric Song and Text; the Homeric World, and Homer in the World. Each section starts with a series of 'macropedia' essays arranged thematically that are accompanied by shorter complementary 'micropedia' articles. The Cambridge Guide to Homer thus traces the many routes taken by Homeric epic in the ancient world and its continuing relevance in different periods and cultures.

Book The Iliad of Homer

  • Publisher : anboco
  • Release : 2016-09-09
  • ISBN : 3736414633
  • Pages : 623 pages

Download or read book The Iliad of Homer written by Homer and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present translation of the Iliad will, it is hoped, be found to convey, more accurately than any which has preceded it, the words and thoughts of the original. It is based upon a careful examination of whatever has been contributed by scholars of every age towards the elucidation of the text, including the ancient scholiasts and lexicographers, the exegetical labours of Barnes and Clarke, and the elaborate criticisms of Heyne, Wolf, and their successors. The necessary brevity of the notes has prevented the full discussion of many passages where there is great room for difference of opinion, and hence several interpretations are adopted without question, which, had the editor's object been to write a critical commentary, would have undergone a more lengthened examination. The same reason has compelled him, in many instances, to substitute references for extracts, indicating rather than quoting those storehouses of information, from whose abundant contents he would gladly have drawn more copious supplies. Among the numerous works to which he has had recourse, the following deserve particular mention-Alberti's invaluable edition of Hesychius, the Commentary of Eustathius, and Buttmann's Lexilogus. In the succeeding volume, the Odyssey, Hymns, and minor poems will be produced in a similar manner. THEODORE ALOIS BUCKLEY
