Book The Invention of the American Art Museum

Download or read book The Invention of the American Art Museum written by Kathleen Curran and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American art museums share a mission and format that differ from those of their European counterparts, which often have origins in aristocratic collections. This groundbreaking work recounts the fascinating story of the invention of the modern American art museum, starting with its roots in the 1870s in the craft museum type, which was based on London’s South Kensington (now the Victoria and Albert) Museum. At the turn of the twentieth century, American planners grew enthusiastic about a new type of museum and presentation that was developed in Northern Europe, particularly in Germany, Switzerland, and Scandinavia. Called Kulturgeschichte (cultural history) museums, they were evocative displays of regional history. American trustees, museum directors, and curators found that the Kulturgeschichte approach offered a variety of transformational options in planning museums, classifying and displaying objects, and broadening collecting categories, including American art and the decorative arts. Leading institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, adopted and developed crucial aspects of the Kulturgeschichte model. By the 1930s, such museum plans and exhibition techniques had become standard practice at museums across the country.

Book European Tapestry in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts

Download or read book European Tapestry in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts written by Minneapolis Institute of Arts and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 1994 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internationally acclaimed European tapestry collection in The Minneapolis Institute of Arts comprises forty-one pieces designed and woven between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, representing all the major tapestry-weaving centers - Flanders, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, and Norway. European Tapestry in The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is the first complete documentation of this outstanding and unusually varied collection. Candace Adelson is a leading European-tapestry scholar and the author of numerous articles and exhibition catalogue texts. In this book she describes in detail how European tapestry was created and marketed, explains the techniques of tapestry weaving, and defines technical terms. Then she analyzes the Institute's pieces individually, exploring in depth each tapestry's subject, symbolism, history, and design and listing related works. The result is an invaluable record of a fragile legacy. Everyone interested in learning more about Western culture and the fascinating world of European tapestry will find this extensively researched, lucidly written, and abundantly illustrated catalogue enlightening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Museums Came: A Social History of the Fine Arts in the Twin Cities gives an engaging portrayal of the fine arts scene of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota in the United States, spanning from the appearance of the earliest artists in 1835 to the opening of the first permanent museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 1915. Readers will learn about the institutions and organizations that were created in support of the fine arts, the early art exhibitions and events, and the collectors, dealers and artists whose efforts made all of that come to fruition. The text – enriched and supplemented by reproductions of artworks, photographs of various personages, exhibition venues, studios, art galleries, catalogues, and ephemera – presents a clear understanding of the period and breaks new ground for future scholars to research. Leo John Harris had pursued three different careers before retiring to follow yet another vocation, this time as a writer. He served in the U.S. Department of State and Foreign Service; he was an international lawyer; and he founded a niche publishing house devoted to books on the arts, history, and popularculture. In his retirement he has written articles and books on philately, the arts and regional history, and this passion has now resulted in a well-researched and richly illustrated publication.

Book Marble Palaces Temples of Art

Download or read book Marble Palaces Temples of Art written by Ingrid A. Steffensen-Bruce and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era from 1890 to 1930 constituted a building boom for American art museums designed in a monumental, classical style; both the proliferation of the buildings and the ubiquity of the style seem to indicate an architectural as well as a sociocultural phenomenon. The present work is an attempt to place the American art museum building of this period into its historical milieu, and employs over one hundred illustrations and sociocultural analysis to explain the significance of both the institutions and the structures housing them to those who came into regular contact with them, including architects, patrons, journalists, and museum personnel.
