Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of Beauty We are thus brought to the conclusion that man is not this sorry insect, this bug feebly crawling upon the face Of the real and tangible earth, but in our essential nature we are the real, we the enduring; we project and contain it. In the immeasurable abyss Of the soul rises and sets the sun; within, the stars take their course; within us is the dawn Of the worlds, the twilight Of the gods. Within are the seasons: there sit night and day; from thence flow the hours. It is we who give birth to the Graces and the Muses. In the soul, beauty has its origin. Its source is spirit ual and that is to say ethical its purpose ethical. Whatever beauty we appear to see without we are to refer to the soul; its perception, soul-perception, its perception spiritual, purposeful, educational with ref erence to the consciousness. We may infer the central purpose to be the education Of the world-conscious ness to perceive all-beauty, all-truth, all-love. Download or read book Kingdom of Beauty written by Kim Brandt and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University Kingdom of Beauty shows that the discovery of mingei (folk art) by Japanese intellectuals in the 1920s and 1930s was central to the complex process by which Japan became both a modern nation and an imperial world power. Kim Brandt’s account of the mingei movement locates its origins in colonial Korea, where middle-class Japanese artists and collectors discovered that imperialism offered them special opportunities to amass art objects and gain social, cultural, and even political influence. Later, mingei enthusiasts worked with (and against) other groups—such as state officials, fascist ideologues, rival folk art organizations, local artisans, newspaper and magazine editors, and department store managers—to promote their own vision of beautiful prosperity for Japan, Asia, and indeed the world. In tracing the history of mingei activism, Brandt considers not only Yanagi Muneyoshi, Hamada Shōji, Kawai Kanjirō, and other well-known leaders of the folk art movement but also the often overlooked networks of provincial intellectuals, craftspeople, marketers, and shoppers who were just as important to its success. The result of their collective efforts, she makes clear, was the transformation of a once-obscure category of pre-industrial rural artifacts into an icon of modern national style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art is a spiritual ministry that must be studied, nurtured, and influenced by the church. Christian artists need to understand the weighty responsibilities of their calling, and the church must understand the importance of art as a divinely appointed ministry. In The Shadow of Beauty, S. Talmond Brown urges artists and church leaders to realize the need for a mission to reestablish the church's cultural authority and recognize art as a God-honored career. Brown includes works by such renowned artists as Leonardo da Vinci and William Blake, presenting biblical proof that all art forms—including paintings, sculptures, music, and literature—are an important means by which artists and non-artists alike can spread God's Word and should be developed to the fullest. Covering such subjects as biblical enigmas, the potential benefits and dangers of art, and the role of art in redeeming our culture, Brown poignantly recounts the church's aesthetic history, revealing the keys to discovering the truth hiding behind The Shadow of Beauty. Stephen Talmond Brown has published the most systematic approach to a truly Reformed Christian theory and practice of art attempted in decades. Equal parts devotional, aesthetic theory, church history, and reformed apologetics, The Shadow of Beauty rolls along with a spiritual rigor and elegance rare for our age. —Tony Norman, Columnist/Associate Editor, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Book The Cult of Beauty

Download or read book The Cult of Beauty written by Jaishri Jethwaney and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deconstructs the quintessential Indian woman that the advertising industry portrays across the spectrum by looking at Indian advertisements across multiple brands with a gender lens based on societal and sociological perspectives. It delves into various critical issues like the differences between culture-defined gender roles/expectations and women’s portrayal in the ad narrative, and which product category has consistently portrayed women as sex objects. Drawing insights from a seminal research study and Erving Goffman’s classic book ‘Gender Advertisements’, it traces the journey of three decades, beginning the 1990s – the era of liberalization in India, to map trends and patterns in Indian advertising and presents the perspectives of the creative teams and top managements across Indian and global advertising agencies. It discusses the application of a Gender Sensitivity Barometer (GSB) which the creative teams can use to find out how sensitive or insensitive the ad has been based on pre-determined indicators suggested by the GSB. This book will be useful to students, researchers and faculty working in the field of management, advertising, mass communication, psychology, gender studies and sociology. It will also be an indispensable companion to professionals from the field of advertising and related areas.
