This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minimum Health and Sanitation Standards in Schools Inasmuch as the union movement among teachers is characterized by a growing desire on the part of teachers to improve the conditions under which the work of teaching is carried on, the Teachers Union decided to go ahead with its plans. Accordingly, it was decided by the Union that the President should resign his position as teacher in a high school. The resignation was accepted January 3, 1921. The letter of resignation dated December 14, 1920, contains this statement quoted here to indicate the scope of the inquiry proposed: Among the conditions inquired into should be the following: The physical conditions, the conditions relative to ad ministration, the conditions relating to teaching. In addition, I believe it is important that studies be made of the quality of our ideals in relation to the prevailing schools of educational thought. In this connection, we should know the source of the moral, the' social, the civic and the professional inspiration of our teachers. The study of these conditions in relation to the product as shown in the output of our schools and in the quality of our citizenship should give us important leads for fundamental changes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schoolhouse Sanitation: A Study of the Laws and Regulations Governing the Hygiene and Sanitation of Schoolhouses Facts germane to this subject might be presented in a variety of arrangements. All data might be arranged geographically, showing first what are the regulations regarding school hygiene in Alabama, then in Arizona, then in Arkansas, etc. Such a procedure would be of some interest and merit from its possibility of holding up to scorn certain States and adding new laurels to the already widely heralded prestige of others. The data, on the other hand, might be arranged to show whether, in the establishment of standards, reliance is placed upon law or upon administrative agents. However, the fundamental interest of the educational public is in the standards of school hygie'ne, not where they obtain or by whom promulgated. For this reason the entire subject has been divided into a number of general topics, and under these the States are considered in alphabetical order. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Hygiene: Or the Laws of Health in Relation to School Life The importance of the subject here discussed must be evident to all who have bestowed even a cursory attention on the sub jcet of popular education. As a matter of fact, it has engaged the serious attention of School Boards and Committees, and been made the subject of repeated legislation by the Educa tion Department. The result of all this is seen in the improved character of the school-buildings which are everywhere being erected. In these, we find that greater attention is paid, not only to the space demanded for each pupil, to which a few years ago the official legislation was almost exclusively confined, but educationists have come to see that lighting, warming, ventila tion, and general sanitary conditions, are of prime importance in their bearing on the health and progress of the children gathered in these schools. Much still remains to be learnt in regard to these matters, and it is of the highest importance that school-managers and all who are concerned in the erection of school premises - or what is perhaps equally important, the modification of already existing schools - should be well acquainted with the principles which determine the sanitary condition of all school premises and arrangements. Book The American Journal of School Hygiene Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Journal of School Hygiene Classic Reprint written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of School Hygiene I wish for The American Journal of School Hygiene a long life of usefulness in its very important field. There is need for such a journal, first to assist in spreading the gospel of good health for children through proper care both at home and in school and through scientific sanitation of school buildings and grounds. Second, to give information in regard to the means of conserving and promoting the health of children, and last and by no means least, to serve as a means of communication between teachers, school boards and superintendents, health inspectors and school physicians and nurses. The rapidly increasing interest in the health of children in school and the recognition of the responsibility of the schools in respect to this subject show the practical trend of modern educational theory and practice. In modern thought and practice education lays hold more and more firmly on life and tries to add to its fullness more effectually. Mere learning and other products of the school room come too high if gained at the expense of physical health and vitality. However well informed, trained and skilled they may be, a vital mistake has been made in the education of those children who come to manhood or womanhood without the health and strength and hardihood necessary to enable them to do the work of men or to bear the burdens of women, without which they are unable to make their knowledge, skill and good will effective for the happiness of themselves and their fellows. There is much economic loss to the State and society when children are reared and educated at great expense, but through lack of necessary knowledge and care of their health go to an early grave or live unprofitable lives as invalids. Therefore the establishment of health and right health habits must be considered among the most important elements in public education, and a knowledge of the laws of health among the most important of all forms of knowledge to be given by the schools. Book The Laws of Health and School Hygiene

Download or read book The Laws of Health and School Hygiene written by Carstairs Cumming Douglas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Health, and School Hygiene: A Hand-Book on School Hygiene Some may object that the sections dealing with anatomy and physiology are too short. This abbrevia tion is intentional. There are already excellent small manuals dealing with physiology suitable for the teacher's needs, and what is wanted is a book treating of the application of physiological knowledge to the hygiene of school life. The tendency in lectures on the laws of health is to overburden them with purely anatomical and physiological details, and so obscure their real pur pose and lessen their value. In the original preparation of my lectures, I gained many useful hints from the excellent articles on the teaching of hygiene to teachers, which appeared in the British Medical Journal during 1904 - 1905. Use has been made of them once more in preparing this manual. Most of the illustrations have been furnished by my publishers. For No. 16 I am indebted to Messrs. E. 85 S. Book Anatomy Physiology and Hygiene for High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Anatomy Physiology and Hygiene for High Schools Classic Reprint written by Henry Fox Hewes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for High Schools In no branch of education is this connection between knowledge and conduct or welfare more direct than in that which deals with the study of our own bodies, and of the laws and practices which must be observed in order to maintain a condition of health and activity in these bodies that is, the study of physiology and hygiene. For upon the Observation of these rules of hygiene depends the preservation of health, a first essential for usefulness as well as enjoyment in life. He can best and most intelligently observe these laws who is familiar with and understands the facts from which they are deduced, the phenomena of physiology. This study should therefore be a part of the education of each and all of us. It should be taken up in youth, for it is during this period that the organs and tissues of the body, the frame, the heart, the brain, are growing and taking on the character which they keep throughout life, and that the practices and habits which are the most deep seated and fundamental are forming. The health and character then acquired often prove the bed rock of the Whole physical, mental, and moral development. The errors committed then are often irreparable, and it is the province of our educational systems to insure that at least these errors shall not be committed through Ignorance. In preparing a text book for this purpose of general education in the schools, the point to be kept most In mind IS the unity of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Surgeon General of the Public Health Service of the United States: For the Fiscal Year 1922 Bubonic plague is perha s the most widespread of all diseases of a pestilential character in t e world, except smallpox. In the early part of the present fiscal year this disease threatened to become epidemic in the southern part of the United States, particularly in cities of the Gulf coast, but prompt and radical measures applied to local conditions in Galveston, Beaumont, and Pensacola, where the disease had gained a foothold, and the continuation of the measures already in force in New Orleans, served to avert its spread. Yellow fever foci were reported during the year in widely scattered areas on both the eastern and western coasts of Mexico, the eastern coast of Central America, and certain portions of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America. In spite of close and active com mercial relations with infected ports, and the occurrence of five cases of this disease on ships arriving at domestic ports situated in infectible territory, the disease was successfully excluded from our country. Book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter.
