Book excerpt: Mini celebrates 60 amazing years of this iconic car, from its revolutionary introduction to the popularity of its new-generation models. The first two-door Mini, introduced in 1959 and built until 2000, revolutionized automotive design with its innovative front-wheel-drive layout that made the car appear bigger on the inside than the outside. In 1999, the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century, behind the Ford Model T. Designed for British Motor Corporation (BMC) by Sir Alec Issigonis and manufactured in England, Australia, Spain, Belgium, Chile, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Yugoslavia, the Mini was as successful in competition as it was on the street, winning the Monte Carlo Rally four times from 1964 through 1967. Originally built by BMC, the Mini’s later parent company, Rover, was acquired by BMW in 1994. In 2000, BMW sold most of the Rover Group but retained the Mini brand. The last and 5,387,862nd original Mini rolled off the production line in October 2000. In July 2001, BMW launched production of the new-generation of Mini which was soon joined by Countryman, Clubman, convertible, Cooper Works, and numerous special editions. Nearly 20 years later, the new Minis remain as popular as the original from 1959.

Book excerpt: The berlinettes were fragile, beautifully designed, lightweight road rockets. For the first time, Alpine Renault enthusiasts around the world can read the complete history of them in English. This book is not just for owners of Alpine Renaults, but for all those interested in rallying and its spectacular period of rapid development in the late 1960s and early '70s. Hear from the men who built the cars, some of the great drivers who became famous driving them, the team manager, the Redele family – creators of the car – and the mechanics who kept the cars going. The story covers the concept, the first cars, the early road cars, and their entry into competition on the European rallying circuit, with full charted documentary details. The Alpine A110 berlinette was a car born to compete, born to win. This is its story.

Book excerpt: More than just a car, the Mini is the most fun-filled and spectacularly successful British car ever built- and now it's back with a new design for the 21st century. 'The Mini: the Making of a Modern Icon' celebrates 50 momentous years of a British design classic, and looks to the future with a special section on the relaunched Mini. 'The Mini' tells the complete story of this most legendary of cars: the unlikely genius who designed it; the Goon who first made it popular; the Lords and Ladies, call-girls and rock stars, swingers and hippies who drove it - at the same time taking a revealing look at Britain's last half century. Not surprisingly, the car that set London swinging and at the same time wowed the rally driving circuit, attracted a legion of famous fans from the entertainment and motor racing worlds - and the book features numerous original photographs and interviews with people such as Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Sterling Moss, Jamie Blandford, Jeremy Clarkson, Damon Hill, Britt Ekland, Twiggy, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. But behind the glitz and glamour of the Mini as an icon was the struggle to make money and a sad decline that exemplified the British motor industry. The book examines the troubled history of the company that made it, the struggles between workers and management, and their role in the decline of the original Mini - and now the miraculous rebirth of an all-new Mini.

Book Alpine Renault Ultimate Portfolio 1958 1995

Download or read book Alpine Renault Ultimate Portfolio 1958 1995 written by and published by Brooklands Books Limited. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alpine was really the only sports car volume manufacturer in France until the seventies, but inspite of this and the outstanding competition history of the company, the history of Alpine is seldom treated seriously outside France. In 1946 Jean Redele took charge of his father's Renault agency in Dieppe which gave him the opportunity to take up serious racing and rallying and in 1952 won the Sport 750 class of the Mille Miglia. In July 1955 he presented his first Alpine built on the floorpan of the Renault 4CV followed by the A108 Cabriolet, and the Berlinette variant in 1960. In 1973 Renault took a majority holding in Alpine but kept Alpine as a separate trading identity. Also in 1973 Alpine won the inaugural World Rally Championship with the A110 Berlinette during which they were placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the Monte Carlo Rally. In 1995 the decision was taken by Renault to end Alpine production after 40 years.
