Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mines Accounting and Management The primary object of this work is to provide mining students attending the course provided by the The Imperial College of Science and Technology with a short handbook, which will explain to them the manner in which the various transactions involved in carrying on a mining undertaking should be recorded in the accounts, or records, kept upon the spot; and how the information thus recorded is ultimately transmitted to the headquarters of the company to which the mine belongs. For this purpose, it has not been considered necessary to explain any very elaborate and complete system of double-entry account-keeping, such as would naturally be employed in connection with mining undertakings operating upon a large scale, and therefore with a numerous and well-organised staff. Wherever there is in existence a complete system of account-keeping, the Mines Manager cannot do better than to study its working, and continue it upon the lines already laid down. Where the Mines Manager - particularly the young Mines Manager - is more likely to want guidance, is when he is operating a comparatively small concern, the accounts of which have not already been formulated by an expert. In such cases he may even find himself having to combine the functions of Mines Accountant with those of Mines Manager; certainly he is likely to find himself in the position that, in order to secure a proper control of events, he must needs familiarise himself with the records sent home to headquarters, as well as with the actual operations embarked upon on the spot. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book had its start when Douglas A. Sloan and the late Ralph Davies first decided to share our firm's experience in mine manage ment consulting assignments by using this experience as the basis for a mine management and productivity course. Over the years with more and more assignments, the course text notes were continuously updated and improved. However, the notes only reached the relatively few persons in the mining industry who attended each year's courses. The purpose of this book is to make this experience and knowledge available to everyone who has an interest in systematic mine management. The book is based on nearly 500 mine management consulting assignments which over the years were carried out by too many consultants to begin to mention names. However, some of the international experts whose work was used or who directly contrib uted must be mentioned. First would be Col. 1. F. Urwick whose books, articles and personal guidance of the author have had a general influence on the whole book and a specific influence on the Organization chapter. Others are John Humble whose work in developing Management by Objectives (MBO) is reflected in that chapter and Patrick H. Irwin for his work in Corporate Planning, which he has written of in that chapter.

Book Mine Accounting and Cost Principles

Download or read book Mine Accounting and Cost Principles written by Thomas Orrin McGrath and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mine Accounting and Cost Principles The present tax laws of most of the States and of the Federal Government require that accurate records be kept and that complete reports be made to the Government of the results of each year's business. The employes of large industrial units are demanding that they be informed of the results of their labor, and be given a share either of the profits of the business or in the savings resulting from their increased efficiency or effort. The general public is insisting that, being the consumer of all products, the costs and profits of industry shall be accurately determined and made public. As the result of the gradual depletion of our richest deposits of minerals the mining industry is operating on a narrower margin of profit than at any time in its history, and must know its costs from month to month to protect against loss. Also, it is now recognized that a mining enterprise may be properly equipped with the best of mechanical appliances and have an organization of high ability and employes embued with the spirit of co-operation, nevertheless the business cannot be intelligently managed without a knowledge of the results of operation and the condition of the business for each operating period, which information can be obtained only by proper accounting and costing. Therefore, each unit of the mining industry feels the need not only of accurately determining its costs and profits so as to have an intelligent guide to operations, and to meet the requirements of the Government, the public and of its employes, but to compile the accounting and costing data in as uniform a manner as possible so as to obtain the benefit of the operating data compiled by the other units of the industry. To meet this need there is an urgent demand for a complete presentation of accounting and costing of mining operations compiled on a scientific basis and in a uniform manner. In spite of this demand, however, at the present time the published literature is inadequate and lacking in uniformity and there is practically no agreement nor any great degree of efficiency in the accounting and costing practice of mines. The only explanation of the present status of mine accounting is that the great diversity in methods of mining, treatment and disposal of mine products, as well as in the character of the mines themselves limits the treatment of the subject to a description of individual systems and accounts unless the fundamental principles underlying all mining operations are recognized. Book American Mine Accounting

Download or read book American Mine Accounting written by W. H. Charlton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Mine Accounting: Methods and Forms Employed by Leading Mining Companies While engaged as accountant with various copper-mining companies in the Lake Superior District, covering a period of twelve years, I was impressed with the fact that the subject of mine accounting was not being given the attention in technical literature that it might well receive, there being to my knowledge only three books published on the subject in the English language, one in this country, one in England and one in Scotland. The result was that I set about the compilation of the material in this volume, which are the practical working systems of companies representative in their particular fields of mining, believing that this treatment of the subject would bo more generally appreciated than a theoretical discussion. I have included in the accounting system of the Ojibway Mining Co. methods for a mill, in order to round out the subject, although this company has not built a mill at the present time. There will no doubt be found errors, both of omission and commission, although I have endeavored to avoid them as much as possible; however, I will be glad to correct in future editions any inaccuracies that are brought to my attention. I wish to acknowledge the many courtesies of my friends who assisted in gathering together and preparing the material in this volume. I am particularly thankful to Mr. E. B. Wilson, editor of "Mines & Minerals," for the use of the articles: "Recording Engineering Data at the Calumet & Arizona Mine," "Recording Engineering Data at the Boston & Montana Con. Mino," and "Recording Geological Data at the Calumet & Arizona Mine"; also to Mr. E. E. Whiteley, Mr. Lee Hayes and Mr. Thorald F. Field, the respective authors of these articles. I am also indebted to Mr. L. E. Camomile, Manager of "Mines & Methods," for the use of the material in the chapter on the methods of the Utah Con. Mining Co., which originally appeared in that journal. In conclusion I commend this volume to the kind consideration of mining men in general and mining accountants in particular, with the hope that it will bo of material benefit to the mining industry of this country.
