Blake, professor of mineralogy, geology and mining at the College of California, parent to the University of California, Berkeley, prepared as a report to the State Board of Agriculture an "Annotated Catalog of the Principal Mineral Species Hitherto Recognized in California and the adjoining States and Territories. " Seventy-seven mineral species appeared on the list. It was the beginning of a series that became known as Minerals of California. This first catalog was followed in 1884 and 1886 by a list of 135 species compiled by H. G. Hanks, the first state mineralogist of California, and pub· lished in the fourth and sixth State Mining Bureau reports. Then beginning in 1914 with a volume prepared by A. S. Eakle, professor of mineralogy at the Uni versity of California, Berkeley, the Division of Mines and Geology published new editions in the series at approximately ten-year intervals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minerals of California Dear Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith Bulletin 136, "Minerals of California," prepared under the direction of the Chief, Division of Mines, Olaf P. Jenkins. "Minerals of California" has undergone several revisions, the last being Bulletin 113 by Professor Adolf Pabst of the University of California; the two previous editions were by Professor A. S. Bakle, of the same institution. The popularity of this book is evinced by the fact that the last edition of 3,000 published in June 1938 went out of stock February 1946, and there are now over 110 standing orders for the new book. The present volume has been greatly enlarged and completely rewritten by Professors Joseph Murdoch and Robert W. Webb of the University of California at Los Angeles. It represents one of the cooperative projects being carried on between the Division of Mines and the State University. Bulletin 136 describes 516 definite minerals besides many subspecies or varieties. This number represents about one-quarter of the total in the world. California is famous for the discovery of new mineral species, 56 of which were originally found for the first time in California, and 39 of these 56 species have, to date, not been found elsewhere in the world. There is a continued and increasing interest in the mineralogy of California and this project has received wholehearted cooperation from all sections of the State and various mineral societies and agencies. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Mineral Resources and Production of California: A Survey With Reference to Postwar Employment Mineral production in California was first comprehensively recorded in 1887. At the close of 1943 the mineral deposits of the State had yielded 653. The wide distribution of mineral resources is evidenced by the fact that each Of the State's 58 counties has contributed to this production and in only two has the value been less than one million dollars. Los Angeles County has been the leader, with output in excess of 2 billion 800 million dollars, followed by Kern County with over one billion 900 million dollars. Orange County with over 800 million dollars and Fresno County exceeding 500 million dollars, occupy third and fourth rank respectively. Ventura has fifth position with'a record of 466 mil lion dollars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Mineral Commodities of California

Download or read book Mineral Commodities of California written by Division of Mines and Geology and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Commodities of California: Geologic Occurrence, Economic Development, and Utilization of the State's Mineral Resources Part 1 summarizes the mineral statistics for California by mineral substance and by counties for the years 1948 and 1947. The data represent the results of work by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State Division of Mines, accompanied by a text prepared by staff members of the Division of Mines. Parts 2, 3, and 4 consist of individual commodity reports compiled by staff members, and make up the principal text of this bulletin. Part 5 consists of tables and lists of dealers, laboratories, and mineral producers in the state. Parts 1 and 5 contain information that customarily is used in the annual statistical bulletin of the Division of Mines, while Parts 2, 3, and 4 represent an entirely new contribution. To bring under one cover a resum' of each mineral commodity of California, its geologic occurrence, mineralogy, distribution, utilization, economics, mining, and production, is the principal aim of this bulletin. Further details of the subject may be found in various records of more extensive investigations, references to which are given. Although most of the previous reports available to our authors have already been published, others are still in preparation. Unfortunately, however, on some of the commodities very little detailed work has yet been started and in these cases our bulletin falls short of being adequate.
