Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Land Surveying Oi the applications of plane surveying to the survey of mineral lands, no one is more representative or has been more greatly perfected in the West than the use of the sun to determine the bearing of a given line. For many years hearings were determined by the use of various solar attachments but of late years the method known as the direct observation seems to have almost entirely taken their place. While with great care any one of the several solar attachments on the market will give fair or even good results, they are all relatively expensive, fragile and with one exception, easily thrown out of adjustment. With the method known as the direct observation no attachment is needed to the ordinary transit provided with a vertical are or circle, preferably the latter, and no adjustment has to be considered other than those necessary to use in every transit in mineral land surveying. As the exact determination of the bearings of lines is probably more important in mineral land surveying than in perhaps any other branch of engineering, disregarding of course geodetic work, it will be taken up in detail. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bodmin Moor is an upland landscape, heavily protected, farmed extensively and with an increasingly light touch, and enjoyed by many as a retreat from busier modern worlds. But it is also a place of industry and the home of busy agricultural communities. Well-preserved remains of streamworking, mining, quarrying, clay working, turf cutting and more intensive farming were subjected to archaeological survey and historical research as part of the wider-ranging survey partly covered in the first volume (on prehistoric and medieval landscapes). Supplementing the survey text are aerial photographs and detailed line drawings, mainly plans and elevations, but also reconstructions of sites and schematic representations of processes as well as large-scale maps of key areas

Download or read book The Chinese in America written by Susie Lan Cassel and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2002 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new collection of essays demonstrates how a politics of polarity have defined the 150-year experience of Chinese immigration in America. Chinese-Americans have been courted as 'model workers' by American business, but also continue to be perceived as perpetual foreigners. The contributors offer engrossing accounts of the lives of immigrants, their tenacity, their diverse lifeways, from the arrival of the first Chinese gold miners in 1849 into the present day. The 21st century begins as a uniquely 'Pacific Century' in the Americas, with an increasingly large presence of Asians in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The book will be a valuable resource on the Asian immigrant experience for researchers and students in Chinese American studies, Asian American history, immigration studies, and American history.
