Those interested in any particular district are therefore urged to procure a copy of the complete report on that district as soon as it is available. This volume, like those previously issued contains both pre liminary statements on investigations made during the year and summaries Of the condition of the mining industry, including statistics of mineral production. It is intended that this series of reports shall serve as convenient reference works on the mining industry for the years which they cover. Lack of funds prevents a visit to every mining district each year by a member of the survey, and therefore the data used in preparing the summary on mining development are in part based on information gleaned from various reliable sources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mining Industry in the Territory of Alaska During the Calendar Year 1915 The output of placer gold showed a slight decrease over 1914, which was partly due to the partial exhaustion of the placers, but also to the fact that many of the operators owning ground tributary to the line of the Government railroad prefer to await the comple tion of the road, when comparatively cheap coal may be obtained, rather than to pay the present excessive price for wood. As the cost of fuel for thawing frozen placers constitutes a large part of the total mining cost, the delay is warranted. The output of placer gold for 1915 is valued at as compared with in 19143' More than 30 gold dredges were busy in the summer of 1915, and the construction of several new ones was started. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Resources of Alaska: Report on Progress of Investigations in 1907 The output of Alaska includes the metals gold, silver, copper, lead, and tin, and the nonmetallic minerals coal, petroleum, gypsum, and marble. In addition to these, iron, tungsten, antimony, quick silver, and graphite deposits have been found, which may prove to have commercial importance. Gold is both the most widely distributed and by far the most im portant of the minerals yet developed. It occurs in combination with silver and other impurities in the alluvium. The auriferous lodes include both free-milling and concentrating ores. Tellurides have been found, but not in commercial quantities. A few grains of platinum have been found in some of the gold placers, but nowhere in commercial quantities. Silver occurs in association with the gold, both in the lodes and placers.
