Book excerpt: The Artificial Intelligence fueled transition toward smart cities and network societies has tremendous impact on the future of humanity. The current narrative of smart cities and data enabled urban systems totally leaves out the components of human experience, feelings, emotions and real human relationships. However, what makes a city smart, is the degree and quality of human connections and social cohesion that individuals feel. Cities are more than just objects, buildings and fixed entities. They are about people and networks that encompass system of life as a whole. In turn, people's behaviour shapes sustainability, resilience and inclusivity of the future of cities. This Manifesto for the future design of smart cities explores the existing ethos of practice of smart cities around the world. Combining Eastern philosophies of change and a Western analytical scientific lens with the notion of the Internet of People and the Internet of We, in parallel to the utilitarian Internet of Things, Dr. Shima Beigi calls for a paradigm shift in this rapidly growing area of smart cities.

It is a must-read for innovation leaders.' Alice Loy, CEO and co-founder of Creative Startups The old models no longer apply. Work today depends on personal, subjective ideas which begin inside our heads and whose success depends on never-ending negotiations with what's going on inside other people's heads. It depends on attitudes and behaviours in small, smart, fast teams. Job descriptions, office structures and nine-to-five expectations have become optional. All the crucial moments – the thoughts and feelings that decide what we do – are invisible. How we manage this and make it visible determines how well we do, how we are paid and whether we enjoy our work. In Invisible Work, John Howkins explores how to discover purpose, autonomy and opportunity in this new isolated, yet connected, world. 'Fresh, original, powerful, profound and deeply practical.' Book Minding the Machine

  • Author : Stephen P. Rice
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

Download or read book Minding the Machine written by Stephen P. Rice and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2004-08-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative book, Stephen P. Rice offers a new understanding of class formation in America during the several decades before the Civil War. This was the period in the nation's early industrial development when travel by steamboat became commonplace, when the railroad altered concepts of space and time, and when Americans experienced the beginnings of factory production. These disorienting changes raised a host of questions about what machinery would accomplish. Would it promote equality or widen the distance between rich and poor? Among the most contentious questions were those focusing on the social consequences of mechanization: while machine enthusiasts touted the extent to which machines would free workers from toil, others pointed out that people needed to tend machines, and that that work was fundamentally degrading and exploitative. Minding the Machine shows how members of a new middle class laid claim to their social authority and minimized the potential for class conflict by playing out class relations on less contested social and technical terrains. As they did so, they defined relations between shopowners—and the overseers, foremen, or managers they employed—and wage workers as analogous to relations between head and hand, between mind and body, and between human and machine. Rice presents fascinating discussions of the mechanics' institute movement, the manual labor school movement, popular physiology reformers, and efforts to solve the seemingly intractable problem of steam boiler explosions. His eloquent narrative demonstrates that class is as much about the comprehension of social relations as it is about the making of social relations, and that class formation needs to be understood not only as a social struggle but as a conceptual struggle.

Download or read book Inventive Minds written by Marvin Minsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six essays by artificial intelligence pioneer Marvin Minsky on how education can foster inventiveness, paired with commentary by Minsky's former colleagues and students. Marvin Minsky was a pioneering researcher in artificial intelligence whose work led to both theoretical and practical advances. His work was motivated not only by technological advancement but also by the desire to understand the workings of our own minds. Minsky's insights about the mind provide fresh perspectives on education and how children learn. This book collects for the first time six essays by Minsky on children, learning, and the potential of computers in school to enrich children's development. In these essays Minsky discusses the shortcomings of conventional education (particularly in mathematics) and considers alternative approaches; reflects on the role of mentors; describes higher-level strategies for thinking across domains; and suggests projects for children to pursue. Each essay is paired with commentary by one of Minsky's former colleagues or students, which identifies Minsky's key ideas and connects his writings to current research. Minsky once observed that in traditional teaching, “instead of promoting inventiveness, we focus on preventing mistakes.” These essays offer Minsky's unique insights into how education can foster inventiveness. Commentary by Hal Abelson, Walter Bender, Alan Kay, Margaret Minsky, Brian Silverman, Gary Stager, Mike Travers, Patrick Henry Winston

Book Introducing Mindfulness Based Wellbeing Enhancement

Download or read book Introducing Mindfulness Based Wellbeing Enhancement written by Kathirasan K. and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement (MBWE) integrates Mindfulness and Wellbeing to realize human flourishing and the attainment of happiness. This 9-session program, conducted over 8 weeks, enhances wellbeing, happiness and quality of life through self-understanding and self-awareness. The first part of the book is devoted to presenting mindfulness, wellbeing, the happiness paradigm and the curriculum of the Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement (MBWE) program. It presents the foundations of mindfulness-based programs, and how mindfulness intersects with wellbeing. The authors argue, with the support of evidence, that mindfulness is well placed to promote human flourishing rather than limiting its relevance to stress reduction and preventing depression relapse. Several chapters are devoted to presenting the MBWE program comprehensively with weekly agendas, homework, handouts, facilitation guides and practice scripts. The second part of the book presents the evidence base of mindfulness, cultural adaptations for different populations, the therapeutic effectiveness of group learning inherent in Mindfulness-Based Programs and the often-untold history of mindfulness. The authors present the often-neglected Asian roots of Mindfulness and justify how secular Mindfulness, as taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is influenced by multiple wisdom traditions as opposed to it being a solely Buddhist practice. This book serves as a hands-on resource for trained mindfulness teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, counsellors, social workers, practitioners, educators, coaches, and consultants. It is also suitable for anyone who is interested in the appreciation of mindfulness and human flourishing.

  • ISBN : 0192559222
  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book Prosperity written by Colin Mayer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is business for? Day one of a business course will tell you: it is to maximise shareholder profit. This single idea pervades all our thinking and teaching about business around the world but it is fundamentally wrong, Colin Mayer argues. It has had disastrous and damaging consequences for our economies, environment, politics, and societies. In this urgent call for reform, Prosperity challenges the fundamentals of business thinking. It sets out a comprehensive new agenda for establishing the corporation as a unique and powerful force for promoting economic and social wellbeing in its fullest sense - for customers and communities, today and in the future. First Professor and former Dean of the Säid Business School in Oxford, Mayer is a leading figure in the global discussion about the purpose and role of the corporation. In Prosperity, he presents a radical and carefully considered prescription for corporations, their ownership, governance, finance, and regulation. Drawing together insights from business, law, economics, science, philosophy, and history, he shows how the corporation can realize its full potential to contribute to economic and social wellbeing of the many, not just the few. Prosperity tells us not only how to create and run successful businesses but also how policy can get us there and fix our broken system.

Book The Mindful Manifesto

Download or read book The Mindful Manifesto written by Dr. Jonty Heaversedge and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress is endemic in our culture. We live in a speedy, pressurized world, and there's often little time to really experience and enjoy our lives. Rather than constantly trying to keep up, perhaps it's time for us to stop and pay attention, to our bodies, minds, and the world. For thousands of years Eastern traditions have taught meditation to help people lead healthier, happier lives. Now, scientific research is confirming that mindfulness can help us all improve our mental and physical well-being. Written by Dr. Jonty Heaveresdge and Ed Halliwell, The Mindful Manifesto integrates the latest scientific and medical research on mindfulness with meditation’s historical context. We will see how mindfulness can:• treat mental health problems such as depression and anxiety• help us cope with the busyness of everyday life• improve our physical health and manage chronic illness• help us let go of unwanted behaviors and improve how we function in our relationships and jobs. And why stop there? With examples of how the mindfulness movement is already well underway, we see that encouraging governments and other powerful institutions to take a mindful approach could make a massive difference to the health and happiness of the whole world.
