Download or read book Mind WorX written by Dan Brand and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is really a number of short stories compiled over a period of years. They consist of a random selection of topics that are separate and yet connected to the one theme: What's life all about, who are we, and why are we here? Those questions bring up even more difficult questions, such as is the world I experience around me real? Are the people around me real? Am I real? Or am I and everything else in this world just part of some elaborate illusion, a dream conjured up by a supremely intelligent energy (God)? You will not find any answers to those questions in this book. Rather, you'll only find my point of view on the possibilities. It's up to you the reader to discern for yourself what the truth might be. It is best, though, not to believe what is written here, for that would only put the damper on your learning. It's better to absorb the reasoning hidden within and between the lines. Then, mix that reasoning with the ideas percolating in your own mind and come up with your own personal version of what reality may be. That's a very important thing for you to do, for combined with the ideas that are emanating from the collective minds of the rest of us seekers of truth, humanity as a whole can evolve and advanced to where we are destined to be. So come on an entertaining and enthralling journey through the thoughts in my mind and see if I can plant a few fertile thoughts in yours.

Download or read book Computing the Mind written by Shimon Edelman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-08 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a culmination of humanity's millennia-long quest for self knowledge, the sciences of the mind are now in a position to offer concrete, empirically validated answers to the most fundamental questions about human nature. What does it mean to be a mind? How is the mind related to the brain? How are minds shaped by their embodiment and environment? What are the principles behind cognitive functions such as perception, memory, language, thought, and consciousness? By analyzing the tasks facing any sentient being that is subject to stimulation and a pressure to act, Shimon Edelman identifies computation as the common denominator in the emerging answers to all these questions. Any system composed of elements that exchange signals with each other and occasionally with the rest of the world can be said to be engaged in computation. A brain composed of neurons is one example of a system that computes, and the computations that the neurons collectively carry out constitute the brain's mind. Edelman presents a computational account of the entire spectrum of cognitive phenomena that constitutes the mind. He begins with sentience, and uses examples from visual perception to demonstrate that it must, at its very core, be a type of computation. Throughout his account, Edelman acknowledges the human mind's biological origins. Along the way, he also demystifies traits such as creativity, language, and individual and collective consciousness, and hints at how naturally evolved minds can transcend some of their limitations by moving to computational substrates other than brains. The account that Edelman gives in this book is accessible, yet unified and rigorous, and the big picture he presents is supported by evidence ranging from neurobiology to computer science. The book should be read by anyone seeking a comprehensive and current introduction to cognitive psychology.

Download or read book How the Mind Works written by Kevin Volkan and published by Phoenix Publishing House. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a great deal of confusion about psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, even among practitioners of these methods. One reason is the sheer volume of psychoanalytic psychotherapies currently practised around the world; some very similar, others widely divergent. To help allay this confusion, Kevin Volkan and Vamik Volkan present what lies at the heart of psychoanalysis and demonstrate the different ways this core can manifest in practice. The authors' aim is to improve psychoanalytic psychotherapists' professional identities as well as their approaches to patients. The wide-ranging subjects discussed include therapeutic principles; key psychoanalytic concepts; psychotherapeutic identity; the clinician's office; making formulations and interpretations; psychosocial development; individual and large-group identity; trauma and transgenerational transmission; dreams and unconscious fantasies; therapeutic play; personality organisations; cultural considerations; and psychoanalysis in organisations and groups. Volkan and Volkan draw upon their decades of experience of psychoanalysis, biculturalism, and supervision of colleagues in various countries and cultures to create an exceptional textbook to explain psychoanalytic theory clearly. They present compelling case examples to illustrate technical issues that never lose sight of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy as living professions that continue to develop. This is a must-read for all who want to learn more about psychoanalytic practice and theory.
Download or read book How The Mind Works Annotated Edition written by Christian D. Larson and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything that is in action must necessarily work through definite laws. And as the mind is in constant action, alternating its actions at almost every turn of thought or feeling, it is evident that a vast number of laws are employed by the mental process. To know how the mind works, therefore, we must know something about these laws. In these pages the most important of the mental and metaphysical laws known to date are considered from every possible viewpoint, the principal object being to ascertain their real nature as well as their power and use. In addition, a number of psychological ideas are presented that will throw light both on the inner and the outer workings of the mind. This is the annotated edition including an essay about the author and the New Thought Movement in Cincinnati, which he founded.

Download or read book The Mechanism of Mind written by Edward de Bono and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mechanism of Mind presents Edward de Bono’s original theories on how the brain functions, processes information and organises it. It explains why the brain, the ’mechanism’, can only work in certain ways and introduces the four basic types of thinking that have gone on to inform his life’s work, namely ‘natural thinking’, ‘logical thinking’,’ mathematical thinking’ and ‘lateral thinking’. De Bono also outlines his argument for introducing the word ‘PO’ as an alternative to the word ‘NO’ when putting lateral thinking into practice. Drawing on colourful visual imagery to help explain his theories and thought-processes, from light bulbs and sugar cubes to photography and water erosion, The Mechanism of Mind remains as fascinating and as insightful as it was when it was first published in 1969. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to gain a greater understanding of how the mind works and organises information – and how Edward de Bono came to develop his creative thinking tools.
