Concluding with reflections on how Milton deploys similar strategies to persuade his readers towards his idiosyncratic brand of godly faith, this book makes an original contribution to current scholarly conversations around the textual culture of Puritanism, the history of rhetoric, and the rhetorical character of theology.

Machiavellian Rhetoric argues in contrast that Renaissance readers were right to see Machiavelli as a Machiavel, a figure of force and fraud, rhetorical cunning and deception. Taking the rhetorical Machiavel as a point of departure, Victoria Kahn argues that this figure is not simply the result of a naïve misreading of Machiavelli but is attuned to the rhetorical dimension of his political theory in a way that later thematic readings of Machiavelli are not. Her aim is to provide a revised history of Renaissance Machiavellism, particularly in England: one that sees the Machiavel and the republican as equally valid--and related--readings of Machiavelli's work. In this revised history, Machiavelli offers a rhetoric for dealing with the realm of de facto political power, rather than a political theory with a coherent thematic content; and Renaissance Machiavellism includes a variety of rhetorically sophisticated appreciations and appropriations of Machiavelli's own rhetorical approach to politics. Part I offers readings of The Prince, The Discourses, and Counter-Reformation responses to Machiavelli. Part II discusses the reception of Machiavelli in sixteenth-and seventeenth-century England. Part III focuses on Milton, especially Areopagitica, Comus, and Paradise Lost.

In Carnal Rhetoric, Lana Cable carries these investigations further by exploring the iconoclastic impulse in Milton’s works through detailed analyses of his use of metaphor. Building on a provocative iconoclastic theory of metaphor, she breaks new ground in the area of affective stylistics, not only as it pertains to the writings of Milton but also to all expressive language. Cable traces the development of Milton’s iconoclastic poetics from its roots in the antiprelatical tracts, through the divorce tracts and Areopagitica, to its fullest dramatic representation in Eikonoklastes and Samson Agonistes. Book excerpt: My critical method, in the first three chapters, is to read Milton's writing less as the expression of an inwardly held set of beliefs than as a means of coping with the contingencies of Interregnum and Restoration England. The second half of the dissertation turns from the prose to the late poetry. In the fourth chapter I examine how the preservation of sophistical rhetoric within the structure of Paradise Lost creates occasions for aesthetic education. In the fifth chapter I trace Satan's "disturbed" fluctuations in Book 9 back to Cicero's habit of trembling uncontrollably before speaking, arguing that trembling, for Cicero, Satan, and Milton, is not merely a passive response to the contingency of the oratorical situation, but rather an active attempt to manage and manipulate that contingency. In the final chapter I read Paradise Regained as Milton's attempt to imagine a new kind of rhetoric that merges word and deed into the exemple of a rightly lived life.
