Book Israeli and Palestinian Postcards

Download or read book Israeli and Palestinian Postcards written by Tim Jon Semmerling and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searing images of suicide bombings and retaliatory strikes now define the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for many Westerners, but television and print media are not the only visual realms in which the conflict is playing out. Even tourist postcards and greeting cards have been pressed into service as vehicles through which Israelis and Palestinians present competing visions of national selfhood and conflicting claims to their common homeland. In this book, Tim Jon Semmerling explores how Israelis and Palestinians have recently used postcards and greeting cards to present images of the national self, to build national awareness and reinforce nationalist ideologies, and to gain international acceptance. He discusses and displays the works of numerous postcard/greeting card manufacturers, artists, and photographers and identifies the symbolic choices in their postcards, how the choices are arranged into messages, what the messages convey and to whom, and who benefits and loses in these presentations of national self. Semmerling convincingly demonstrates that, far from being ephemeral, Israeli and Palestinian postcards constitute an important arena of struggle over visual signs and the power to produce reality.

Book excerpt: When the University of Georgia was founded in 1801, the city of Athens did not yet exist. The school's first classes were held under the trees, and Athens grew up around the school. As the university and Athens expanded, the town became the economic and cultural center of a large section of northeast Georgia, and many beautiful homes and other buildings were built. Fortunately, Athens was not in the path of Yankee general William T. Sherman's army when they sacked and burned a 30-to-60-mile-wide swath through Georgia between Atlanta and Savannah during his infamous March to the Sea in 1864. Consequently, several historic buildings still stand on the university's campus, and many beautiful antebellum homes still grace Athens's streets, avenues, and boulevards.

Book The Edwardian Picture Postcard as a Communications Revolution

Download or read book The Edwardian Picture Postcard as a Communications Revolution written by Julia Gillen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers a novel investigation of the Edwardian picture postcard as an innovative form of multimodal communication, revealing much about the creativity, concerns and lives of those who used postcards as an almost instantaneous form of communication. In the early twentieth century, the picture postcard was a revolutionary way of combining short messages with an image, making use of technologies in a way impossible in the decades since, until the advent of the digital revolution. This book offers original insights into the historical and social context in which the Edwardian picture postcard emerged and became a craze. It also expands the field of Literacy Studies by illustrating the combined use of posthuman, multimodal, historic and linguistic methodologies to conduct an in-depth analysis of the communicative, sociolinguistic and relational functions of the postcard. Particular attention is paid to how study of the picture postcard can reveal details of the lives and literacy practices of often overlooked sectors of the population, such as working-class women. The Edwardian era in the United Kingdom was one of extreme inequalities and rapid social change, and picture postcards embodied the dynamism of the times. Grounded in an analysis of a unique, open access, digitized collection of 3,000 picture postcards, this monograph will be of interest to researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of Literacy Studies, sociolinguistics, history of communications and UK social history.

Book As We Were

  • Publisher : David R. Godine Publisher
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9781567922509
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book As We Were written by Rosamond B. Vaule and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, no one seriously doubts the value, both aesthetic and historic, of the ubiquitous American photographic postcard. This was the medium that really brought photography to the masses; these cards were affordable, they were topical, and they could be sent for a penny anywhere in the country. The variety of imagery, much of it developed anonymously in small studios, much of it taken by inspired amateurs (these were the days when anyone could, and many folks did, own a camera) displays America in all its variety and vitality. Most postcards were mass produced and printed in ink by the collotype or halftone process. But a few were original photographic prints, exposed directly from glass plates or film negatives. Known as real photos these were real photographs, aristocrats of the genre and spectacular examples of vernacular photography. In this charming and scholarly book, Vaule selects the best of them, from all over the country, addressing their social and historical contexts, explaining the mysteries of their manufacture and dissemination, and describing the characteristics and identities of their makers, many of whose names and studios are listed in the book. But without doubt, it is the images themselves that still hold us: storefronts and townships, frisky children and sober adults, air ships and barn raisings. Over one hundred are reproduced here, each in fine-line duotone, each as fascinating and compelling today as when first fixed on paper.
