His life is accompanied by catastrophes that he cannot disentangle. He loses his breadwinner-Uncle before completing primary school, hence dropping out. The woes of living with his extended maternal family also torment his childhood. As the wave of the liberation struggle in Southern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe) intensifies, he joins, mainly pushed by his desperate desire to hold an AK47, a toy he never had as a child. He narrowly escapes death at the famous ZIPRA training camp ambush in Zambia. When the liberation war came to a halt, another war of ethnic groups followed, famously known as Gukurahundi, later referred to as 'a moment of madness'. He has no choice but to flee the country as a fugitive, landing himself in the heart of Hillbrow in Johannesburg, a residential area where only the fittest survive. Living as an undocumented foreigner in the Apartheid South Africa is no cup of coffee. His life is further soured when his buried past reincarnates to haunt him. With the scarcity of employment in SA, he finds himself 'piece jobs', working for 'Baas'. Life castrates him again when he is fired by his Baas for an ironic reason. He begins living the day he stops looking for a job.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome To Our Hillbrow is an exhilarating and disturbing ride through the chaotic and hyper-real zone of Hillbrow - microcosm of all that is contradictory, alluring and painful in the changing South African psyche. Everything is there: the shattered dreams of youth, sexuality and its unpredictable costs, AIDS, xenophobia, suicide, the omnipotent violence that often cuts short the promise of young people, and the Africanist understanding of the life continuum that does not end with death but flows on into an ancestral realm. Infused with the rhythms of the inner city pulsebeat, this courageous novel is compelling in its honesty and its broad vision, which links Hillbrow, rural Tiragalong and Oxford. It spills out the guts of Hillbrow-living with the same energy and intimate knowledge ,with which the Drum writers wrote Sophiatown into being.

Book The Medicina Plinii

    Book Details:
  • Author : Yvette Hunt
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-10-01
  • ISBN : 1317389042
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book The Medicina Plinii written by Yvette Hunt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first ever English translation of the Medicina Plinii, one of the most influential books of applied medicine and self-medication in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The work, which predates AD 400, was created as a quick reference work for travellers, and became and remained highly influential, as witnessed by frequent references to it and by various later adaptations. Only the rise of scientific medicine and pharmacology led to its demise and confinement in a small corner of specialist studies. It presents more than 1,150 healing methods and recipes mainly adapted from the encyclopedic Natural History of Pliny the Elder, arranged from the patient’s head to foot in order that readers could quickly find treatments for their diseases. The Medicina Plinii is of dual interest to present-day scholarship: The book is a monument for the practical application of classical knowledge which has recently found lively interest in the history of science and medicine. At the same time the Medicina Plinii provides a fascinating insight into the realities of the world of Late Antiquity, and into the anxieties of the people living in the vast Roman empire. This book will be of particular interest to scholars and advanced students in the History of Science and Medicine, along with a wider audience interested in medicine, and in life in the Roman world.

Book The Healing Power of Gemstones

Download or read book The Healing Power of Gemstones written by Harish Johari and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the ancient Hindu disciplines of Tantra and Ayurveda, as well as astrology and his own family tradition of gemology, Harish Johari offers practical methods to utilize the power stored in gems to maximize physical and psychological balance and well-being. The origins of gem healing can be traced to the earliest Sanskrit scriptures, in which gems are valued for their ability to absorb and transmit vital life forces. Ayurvedic healers, Indian astrologers, and Tantric alchemists all made use of gem formulas in their various practices. The author describes these in vivid detail as well as the attributes and powers of the sun and planets according to Hindu astrology and legend as they relate specifically to the use of gems. Here they play a critical role in enhancing the positive power of the planets and reducing their negative influence. Charts are included that determine the appropriate gems to be worn according to one’s astrological sun sign and ascendant. Detailed instructions necessary for the creation of gem talismans and the rituals that use gems to obtain desired effects are also supplied by the author. The Healing Power of Gemstones, the most comprehensive survey of this subject available today, is both a practical guide to the chemical and subtle nature of gemstones and a traditional overview of their use throughout the ages.

Book Fighting Words and Feuding Words

Download or read book Fighting Words and Feuding Words written by Thomas R. Walsh and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anger is central to the Homeric epic, but few scholarly interventions have probed HomerOs language beyond the study of the IliadOs first word: menis. Yet Homer uses over a dozen words for anger. Fighting Words and Feuding Words engages the powerful tools of Homeric poetic analysis and the anthropological study of emotion in an analysis of two anger terms highlighted in the Iliad by the Achaean prophet Calchas. Walsh argues that kotos and kholos locate two focal points for the study of aggression in Homeric poetry, the first presenting HomerOs terms for feud and the second providing the native terms that designates the martial violence highlighted by the Homeric tradition. After focusing on these two terms as used in the Iliad and the Odyssey, Walsh concludes by addressing some post-Homeric and comparative implications of Homeric anger.

Published in the late 18th century, this comprehensive two-volume work reflects Erasmus Darwin's visionary ideas on the interconnectedness of living organisms and the dynamic processes governing life. In "Zoonomia," Erasmus Darwin anticipates some aspects of evolutionary theory that his grandson, Charles Darwin, would later expand upon.
