Book An Examination of the Challenges of Veteran Reintegration and the Application of Drama Therapy Techniques

Download or read book An Examination of the Challenges of Veteran Reintegration and the Application of Drama Therapy Techniques written by Tiffany Towers and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military veterans comprise a distinct population with complex needs upon reintegration into civilian life. There is no established "one size fits all" reintegration procedure, and the Department of Veterans Affairs is not equipped to manage the needs of every military veteran. Drama therapy has been used with various populations, including trauma survivors, incorporating emotional expression and group interaction in a non-threatening environment. This study utilized a specific application of drama therapy techniques and implemented an anonymous self-report survey to demonstrate the potential benefits received through the application of drama therapy while comparing civilian and veteran groups. The results found no significant difference between civilians and veterans regarding identified benefits of a drama therapy intervention, and the participants identified both intrapersonal and interpersonal benefits from their participation in the drama program. This study emphasized the multi-dimensional challenge of reintegration and presented a multi-dimensional treatment modality in the form of drama therapy.

Book The Active Duty to Civilian Reintegration Dilemma

Download or read book The Active Duty to Civilian Reintegration Dilemma written by Bradley Dean and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research is to discuss the problems with reintegration from active duty to civilian life. The hope is to also conduct a case study of veterans that are actively participating in a novel civilian-based sustainable and scalable solution to build a business skill that will help them in all walks of life. Scars and Stripes Coffee (SSC) is a company on a unique mission to empower veterans to start their own e-commerce business. The author is driven by the belief that this company’s purpose is much bigger than selling a bag of coffee. The companies purpose stems from my belief that veterans have substantial reintegration needs which our society is not meeting. Our young veterans are returning with images and voices that never leave their heads. This is caused by a unique combat zone experiences where the enemy is at times unknown. Like veterans from other wars, they return from war, but the war never leaves them. They find themselves to be strangers in their own country even in a room full of familiar faces. Based on the authors literature review, the common theme surrounding the veteran reintegration dilemma is emotional or physical trauma. In addition, a lack of formal education, sense of purpose and understanding their new mission in life leads to anger and confusion. The veteran reports of having difficulty applying their military skills to a civilian job or business culture. Reported levels of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are increasing. I feel that is being caused by the lack of understanding from the veteran on how to navigate in an individualistic society versus a military community-based environment. As a veteran only business model, SSC is employing a novel approach to develop a successful company. The mission is to continue to build a for-profit company that will be sustainable through the sale of coffee. The military structure is what makes the company scalable because each member can continue to increase in rank. SSC will be built through a known military rank structure starting with the basic Team member to Squad Leader to Platoon Sergeant then on to 1ST Sergeant. With this structure, the company will be able to build communities of veterans with a common mission, purpose, team and accountability. Eventually, there will be an SSC team to join in every town in America. SSC will reignite the camaraderie that makes the U.S. Military so successful and adapt that type of culture into a civilian based company. In turn, veteran “transition coaches” will be developed throughout the members joining the company to training and advance other veterans through the rank structure. This will create a team environment so that the joining veteran has a group of other veterans to help them navigate the reintegration process. In addition, an empirically designed study will be discussed to test the efficacy of this model."--Abstract.

Download or read book Living the Dream written by Fred Bo Dunning and published by Living the Dream. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When military veterans separate from the military, they face struggles that are hard to understand. Finding their place and a purpose is not as easy as it sounds. The military tells us when we separate there will be people waiting in line to hire us because of our dedication, punctuality, loyalty, work ethic, and the desire to get the job done. That is true for some, but others struggle to find a job or just fit in. Living the Dream is a collection of real stories I have heard in the therapy room, from friends, and acquaintances, trying to become a civilian again. Living the Dream is intended to let military veterans know they are not alone and help civilians understand the culture shock our veterans face once they leave Active Duty. It is my hope this book will encourage society to help veterans find their place and a purpose. --- Fred "Bo" Dunning, M.A., LMFT

Book Military Past Civilian Present

Download or read book Military Past Civilian Present written by Paul Taylor and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-17 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book presents a synthesis of current international knowledge on the topic of military veteran transition to civilian life. Understanding the transition of individuals from military institutions to civilian life is of great importance. The essential elements of transition support are currently widely debated in order to assess current practice and potential shortcomings in the intention to improve health, welfare and social outcomes for military veterans. This text links original research and critical commentary to public policy and practice in the area of veteran transition. Doing so through a collection of international perspectives assists in locating continuity and difference between strategies, agendas and the realities of what is actually known of the veteran’s experience. Chapters in this text examine the subject of transition along lines of enquiry that focus in on themes such as social justice, veteran identity and developments in transition agendas. Globally, many veterans face complex social issues such as low income, barriers to employment, and problems of health and welfare. Chapters take stock of the real-world issues affecting veterans and at the same time casts a critical eye over the limitations in accessing, or denial of access to opportunities, support and remedy. The veteran identity is an important dimension of enquiry here. This book looks at the relational factors between the veteran and the public, the creation of a master status and the challenges faced by veterans in transitioning into a cultural context that is saturated with imagery of what a veteran ‘is’. Chapters also seek to pose recommendations as to how the policy and practice agenda that surrounds veterans and the bridging of the gap between military and civilian life may be developed. Here authors point towards the value of knowledge, research and analysis that is underpinned by participatory strategies with veterans themselves. For example, seeking to establish lines of enquiry that value the voice of veterans as an ongoing and iterative dimension of developing understanding.

Book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services

Download or read book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 4 million U.S. service members took part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

Book From Soldier to Civilian

Download or read book From Soldier to Civilian written by Sarah N. Crain and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Census (2017) estimates that there are 1.6 million veterans in Texas. There are a significant number of government and nonprofit organizations that help veterans reintegrate into society. Asking professionals at these veteran nonprofit organizations who specialize in serving this population will determine what factors attribute to successes and failures in making the change from soldier to civilian. Surveying organizations allows for research beyond the literature for critical variables that assist veteran reintegration into civilian life. This study does not attempt to be an extensive list of all programs offered through nonprofits, but instead it seeks to determine key strengths by interviewing professionals that serve thousands of veterans throughout the State of Texas and asking those professionals what services, personal characteristics or other assets they have found to be beneficial for their clients during reintegration. A content analysis of these interviews suggests a consensus among the respondents about what assets can be focused upon to increase the likelihood of successful reintegration for the future. Respondents believed that there are client and program factors that limit success. The most common program limitations are lack of funding, a veteran mindset warrior ethos, and lack of marketing while the most common veteran limitations are veterans' attitudes and veterans' support systems. The literature on this subject goes back about thirteen years and this study confirms that veterans are still facing the same issues.

Book Well After Service

Download or read book Well After Service written by Nancy Berglass and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most veterans successfully transition out of uniform and into civilian life. However, some recent veterans face service-related challenges, and there is no government agency, program or mechanism that properly and holistically addresses their wellness. Instead, communities across America, many of which are unfamiliar with the military and service-related needs, are left to support those recent veterans that need assistance reintegrating into civilian life. This report begins with a new definition of veteran wellness, a concept that differs from both military wellness and civilian wellness. The authors also analyze the efforts of current community-based models for delivering services to veterans. Building upon this new understanding of wellness and the best practices of community-based models, the authors outline a new framework for stakeholders, including government agencies, policymakers, community leaders and business, offering concrete recommendations for how the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs and community-based and private organizations can work together successfully to reintegrate veterans into civilian society.

Book Getting Back to Society The Relationship of Distance Settled from a Military Installation to Veteran Reintegration Success

Download or read book Getting Back to Society The Relationship of Distance Settled from a Military Installation to Veteran Reintegration Success written by Joshua Grubbs and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's military veterans are a diverse group of people living all across the nation. This paper seeks to determine if where veterans settle matters to their success as civilians. The idea that many veterans choose to remain close to military and veteran communities, further distancing themselves from larger society, is a concern for the continued success of the All-Volunteer Force. This paper uses a linear probability analysis of United States Census data to identify if the distance veterans settle from military installations is a significant predictor of success. I use participation in community organizations as a measure of success as this demonstrates a level of comfort participating in the new community and is an important method for sharing the realities of military service with potential recruits. The results support the hypothesis that as distance from a military installation increases predicted participation in community organizations increases. These results recommend a shift in transition assistance programs from a focus on employment to a focus on getting transitioning service-members to the right location for them, possibly further from a military installation than they might seek on their own.

Book excerpt: War creates veterans and societies are reminded by their existence that violent conflicts had been waged in the past. Even when the wars have been long forgotten by many, veterans are the ones whose fate has been tied to war and destruction.Societies often struggle with their veterans, especially when they have to address the former soldiers? traumatic experiences and acknowledge the wounds that hurt beyond the body. While veterans are often a steady reminder of violent conflicts of the past, they are often ignored by their societies, once peace is achieved. Nevertheless, veterans play an important role in postwar contexts as well and their role, their possible influence and impact in the supposedly non-violent world need to be addressed. The present volume discusses the role of veterans in the aftermath of war and shows how they had been treated by and how societies tried to reintegrate them in narratives of the past.
