A collection of reminiscences written by members of the U.S. Naval Academy class of 1952, it is a testament to the value of a Naval Academy education. Some stories are of combat in Korea, exploits in space, aerial combat over Vietnam, or development of major weapons systems. • Author : GEORGE S. BERNARD
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2024-06-28

Download or read book Civil War Talks written by GEORGE S. BERNARD and published by . This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George S. Bernard was a Petersburg lawyer and member of the 12th Virginia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Over the course of his life, Bernard wrote extensively about his wartime experiences and collected accounts from other veterans. In 1892, he published War Talks of Confederate Veterans, a collection of firsthand accounts focusing on the battles and campaigns of the 12th Virginia that is widely read to this day. Bernard prepared a second volume but was never able to publish it. After his death in 1912, his papers became scattered or simply lost. But a series of finds, culminating with the discovery of a cache of papers in Roanoke in 2004, have made it possible to reconstruct a complete manuscript of the unpublished second volume. The resulting book, Civil War Talks, contains speeches, letters, Bernard's wartime diary, and other firsthand accounts of the war not only by veterans of the Confederacy, such as General William Mahone, but by Union veterans as well. Their personal stories cover the major military campaigns in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania--Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Appomattox. For the general reader, this volume offers evocative testimonies focusing on the experiences of individual soldiers. For scholars, it provides convenient access to many accounts that, until now, have not been widely available or have been simply unknown.

Book Reminiscences Of My Military Life From 1795 To 1818

Download or read book Reminiscences Of My Military Life From 1795 To 1818 written by Lt.-Colonel Charles Steevens and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having survived a posting to the disease ridden West Indies, the young ensign Steevens returned to Europe for further service with the XXth Regiment of Foot of the British Army, known as the “Old and Bold”. After some desultory fighting in the campaign in Holland, during which he was wounded and taken prisoner, Steevens had the good fortune to be exchanged for a Dutch officer and went back to active service. His adventures continued in Egypt and Sicily to Maida, where he was engaged with his regiment at the battle of the same name (1806). Posted to the Peninsular, Steevens was in the light company of his battalion which fought in the company of the 95th Rifles at Vimiero (1808), despite suffering from a severe illness. His command of the light company of his regiment in the 1809 campaign under Sir John Moore would be very trying for him as the army retreated to fight a rearguard action at the battle of Corunna. As part of the military policy of the British government an expedition to Holland was again sent whilst Napoleon was elsewhere engaged, Steevens had the misfortune to be one of its members, suffered depredations on the “Fever” island of Walcheren. Steevens would then be sent to the Peninsular once again to take part in the later part of the 1812 campaign doing some hard marching, until the battle of Vittoria in 1813, the debris and looting after which he gives a graphic description of. Present at the battle of Sauroren, and the siege of San Sebastian, he passes some touching anecdotes of some of his comrades who were not as lucky as he in avoiding harm during these hard-fought actions. After participating in further engagements that sent the French finally out of Spain, the later years of his soldiering were on garrison duty in Ireland. “Lieut.-Colonel Steevens received a gold medal for the actions on the Pyrenees (July 28th to August 2nd, 1813); and also the silver war medal, with seven clasps, for Egypt, Maida, Vimiera, Corunna, Vittoria, Nivelle, Nive.” A thoughtful memoir of a widely-respected soldier who saw much action during the Napoleonic Wars. Author – Charles Steevens – (1777-1861)

Book Personal Reminiscences of General Robert E Lee

Download or read book Personal Reminiscences of General Robert E Lee written by J. William Jones and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Robert E. Lee passed on without setting pen to paper on his memoirs, both North and South alike were deprived of a classic personal history of the War Between the States worthy to sit on the shelf next to Ulysses S.Grant's Personal Memoirs. The Reverend J. William Jones, Lee's chaplain, compiled this collection of reminiscences in its place as a memorial volume commemorating his death. Filled with correspondence with President Andrew Johnson, General Grant, and C.S.A. Generals Scott, Beauregard, and Longstreet, and personal anecdotes from Lee's wartime contemporaries such as Jubal Early, Jeb Magruder, Jefferson Davis, and Winfield Scott. What comes to light is a personal portrait of Lee as family man, gentleman, scholar, and soldier, as well as an eyewitness account of the war that threatened to tear the United States asunder, as witnessed by the South's greatest military leader. The Reverend J. William Jones, D.D., was the chaplain of the Army of Northern Virginia under the command of General Robert E. Lee and after the Civil War served as chaplain for Washington College in Virginia under Lee's presidency. It was my proud privilege to have known General Lee intimately. I saw him on that day in April, 1861, on which he came to offer his stainless sword to the land that gave him birth. I followed his standard from Harper's Ferry, in 1861, to Appomattox Court-house, in 1865, coming into somewhat frequent contact with him, rejoicing with him at his long series of brilliant victories, and weeping with him when "compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources. . . . " This first attempt at authorship is sent forth with a sincere desire that it may prove acceptable to the countless admirer of the great Confederate chieftain, that it may serve to give to all a higher appreciation of his noble character, and that it may prove a blessing to the young men of the country (more especially to those who "wore the gray"), by inducing them to study, in order that they may imitate, his shining virtues.
