Book Organizational Cultures and the Management of Nuclear Technology

Download or read book Organizational Cultures and the Management of Nuclear Technology written by Russell Kirk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear technology has been an organizing premise of the international system since 1945. Eight countries have officially acknowledged the possession of nuclear weapons. Many countries have harnessed the atom for electricity generation and other civilian uses. Roughly 440 commercial nuclear reactors operate in thirty countries providing 14 percent of the world's electricity. Volatile oil prices and concerns about climate change have led newly emerging economies in Asia to express keen interest in using nuclear energy to meet growing energy demands. Since the basic technological apparatus for both civilian and military nuclear programs is the same, there are concerns about the potential spread of dual-use technology. The future stability of the international order depends on the responsible management of their nuclear assets by nuclear powers. The relationship between civilian authorities and the military takes on special significance in states with nuclear weapons or near-weapon capability. The constitutional balance of powers, the delegation of authority during wartime and peace, influences from public opinion and bureaucratic structures on the formulation of doctrine, crisis management, and communications with the international media and the general public are influenced by civil-military relations and organizational culture. This volume will be of broad interest to scholars of civil-military relations, political science, and political sociology.

Book On the Uses of Military Power in the Nuclear Age

Download or read book On the Uses of Military Power in the Nuclear Age written by Klaus Eugen Knorr and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Knorr examines bends in the values which nations derive in their international relationships from the possession and use of both nuclear and non-nuclear military forces, and suggests that territorial conquest and the furtherance of economic benefits by military means have generally diminished in appeal. He inquires into the costs and disadvantages of military power-the greatly reduced security obtainable even by the major nuclear powers and the noticeable diminution in the legitimacy of international violence in its several forms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although advanced technologies are the cornerstone of modern life, few people understand how such technologies as robotics or nuclear science actually work. Fewer still realize how—and how dramatically—technology influences our society and culture. Nuclear Technology, the newest volume in the Sourcebooks in Modern Technology Series, is a reference guide that provides non-specialists with the most up-to-date information on seminal developments in nuclear technology, as well as covering the social, political, and technical impacts of those developments on everyday life, both now and in the future. Included are a detailed history of nuclear technology's evolution, a discussion of civilian and military applications of nuclear technology, a chronology of major developments and discoveries, profiles of prominent scientists, politicians, popularizers, and institutions, explanations of key principles, a discussion of nuclear technology's major impacts and implications, an examination of major issues surrounding nuclear technology's use, and predictions of future advances. Nuclear Technology also offers a glossary of terms, a list of key associations, a list of print and electronic information resources, over 90 illustrations, and an index.
