Book Glasnost Perestroika and the Socialist Community

Download or read book Glasnost Perestroika and the Socialist Community written by Charles Bukowski and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-02-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there is an abundance of scholarly inquiry into the effects on the Soviet socialist system of the historic reforms under Gorbachev's administration, relatively little attention has been paid to the impact these reforms might have on socialism outside the Soviet Union. This book makes a preliminary assessment of the impact of glasnost, perestroika, and related Soviet reforms on selected socialist countries. The sampling of socialist countries studied are roughly representative of the types of socialist states in existence today. The countries studied include Poland, Czechoslovakia, China, Cuba, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and North Korea. The contributors to this volume approach their topics from varying perspectives, each singling out and examining different areas in the individual governments where the impact of Soviet reforms is likely to be strongest. The result is a number of varying conclusions regarding the effects of glasnost and perestroika on the socialist community. In some cases, the impact might be intentional and direct, part of a conscious policy adopted by the Soviet Union. In other cases, the impact may be indirect and even unintentional, given the complex and interdependent nature of world politics and economics. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in comparative politics, international relations, and communist studies will find this book a source of stimulating ideas about the rapidly changing face of socialism.

Book Gorbachev and Perestroika

Download or read book Gorbachev and Perestroika written by Martin McCauley and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a narrative and analysis of the first four years of the Gorbachev phenomenon. All areas of great significance are covered. Special attention is paid to the economy, nationality affairs and foreign affairs. Gorbachev's standing abroad is much higher than at home. Seen by many abroad as a charismatic figure, he has still to convince the average worker and farmer that perestroika is good for them. The first four years present a fascinating tableau of Soviet change and resistance to change. This book provides the reader with the insights to understand the processes now under way in the largest country in the world. For those who wish to be informed about the Soviet Union and aim to follow events there, it will be required reading.

Book Glasnost Perestroika and the Soviet Media

Download or read book Glasnost Perestroika and the Soviet Media written by Brian McNair and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet journalists are at the center of the tumultuous changes taking place in the USSR today. As Stalinist regimes across Eastern Europe are dismantled, the reforms of Mikhail Gorbachev have transformed Soviet political, social and economic life. Glasnost, Perestroika and the Soviet Media examines the implications of these changes for the Soviet news and television media. It traces the development of Soviet journalism through the writings of Marx and Lenin, the distortions of Stalin and Brezhnev, and the reforms of the Gorbachev era, culminating in the new press law, which provides greater freedom of the press and freedom of information. The discussion is accompanied by analysis of the content of Soviet print and television journalism, including chapters on Soviet news coverage of the superpower summits in Rejkyavik and Moscow, a comparison of Soviet and Western reporting of international affairs, and the impact of glasnost on Soviet media images ofwomen.
