Book excerpt: BORN OF HEAVEN. BUILT IN HELL. HUNTED BY BOTH Meet Luci-va, daughter of Lucifer. She’s a nephilim, a demon-human hybrid, a violent immortal forbidden by God. But Luci-va doesn’t care. She’s a deadly, mischievous diva with a burning addiction to the consumption of souls. Luci-va works for Hell and she loves her work. But everything changes when the Archangel Mikha’el delivers her a life-shattering truth. She is not Luci-va, demonic spawn of Lucifer. She is Michelle, Mikha’el’s angelic daughter, abducted as a child, spirited to Hell, and raised as Lucifer’s own. Her mind reels. Betrayed by the only father she knows, her happy universe is shown a lie. Her world crumbles. Spiraling into despondency, she exiles herself to the deepest bowels of Hell. There, she makes a shocking discovery; a secret prison housing a savagely tortured angelic legion. Compassion tears through her and she vows to free her brutalized brothers. Torn by the redemptive promise of her oath and her mad desire to return to her familiar life of consuming souls, she is at a crossroads, Michelle or Luci-va, who is it to be? All she knows for sure is that either choice will put her on a path to war with the forces of Heaven and Hell. In M. Meehan’s epic fantasy, Mikha’el’s Daughter: The Book of Redemption, the lines between contemporary culture and theology, mythology, and fantasy are gloriously blurred. Its voice is now, while its themes are eternal. For readers who want something truly different, thoroughly entertaining, and thought-provoking all at the same time, this is that rare novel that delivers on every page.

Book Home Truths

  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Home Truths written by David Buckingham and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2011-01-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the video camera has become a commonplace household technology. With falling prices on compact and easy-to-use cameras, as well as mobile phones and digital still cameras with video recording capabilities, access to moving image production technology is becoming virtually universal. Home Truths? represents one of the few academic research studies exploring this everyday, popular use of video production technology, looking particularly at how families use and engage with the technology and how it fits into the routines of everyday life. The authors draw on interviews, observations, and the participants' videos themselves, seeking to paint a comprehensive picture of the role of video making in their everyday lives. While readers gain a sense of the individual characters involved in the project and the complexities and diversities of their lives, the analysis also raises a range of broader issues about the nature of learning and creativity, subjectivity and representation, and the "domestication" of technology---issues that are of interest to many in the fields of sociology and media/cultural studies. David Buckingham is Professor of Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, and Director of the Institute's Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media. Rebekah Willett is Lecturer at the Institute of Education, University of London, where she teaches in Media, Culture and Communication. Maria Pini previously worked as Lecturer in Media and Communications at Goldsmiths College, London University, and is now a researcher on the Camcorder Cultures project at the Institute of Education. Book Christianity and the Brain

Book excerpt: What happens in our brains and minds at the last hour of life? What occurs during the moment of separation between the human body and the unseen individual soul and spirit? In the third volume of the three-book series on Christianity and the human brain, author Ramsis F. Ghaly, MD, focuses on the brain and its final journey during the last moments of life. Every human soul will see death one day. But few of us know what occurs during the transitional time when the physical brain surrenders and the spiritual brain takes over. We also do not know what the human mind will see and interact with as it approaches the final moments of departure. A Coptic Orthodox Christian and American board-certified neurosurgeon, anesthesiologist, and pain specialist, Ghaly sheds light on this intriguing phenomenon. Drawing on his interaction with thousands of individuals who have entered this last hour of life, Ghaly offers examples and a realistic portrait of a human being's final moments. Christianity and the Brain, Volume III: The Christian Brain and the Journey to the Last Hour blends neuroscience and medical knowledge with the Bible of our loving Lord.

Book excerpt: What happens when the king’s most obedient soldier is issued a wicked command? Benaiah is valiant against men and beasts. He is known for three heroic deeds that lead to his appointment in the elite force of David’s Mighty Men: aggressively going down into a pit on a snowy day to kill a lion; fighting two Moabite ariels; and challenging a giant Egyptian the size of David’s Goliath, armed with only a staff, and killing him with the man’s own spear. When David is crowned king, Benaiah is made his chief bodyguard and eventually head of the whole army of Israel under King Solomon. Reeling from the tragic cost of disobedience when he was young, Benaiah directs his life toward one chief aim: to be found a faithful, loyal, valiant and obedient soldier, servant of the King and follower of Yahweh. But when “just following orders” leads to his part in adultery, murder and death, he questions his life’s direction. If both obedience and disobedience cause death, how can he ever find redemption?

Book Between the Ideal and the Real

Download or read book Between the Ideal and the Real written by Akeel Abbas and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the Ideal and the Real describes why Iraq state-building and democratic transformation failed by offering a very new, and unusual, perspective, away from the usual blame assigned to the US that has become part of the “conventional wisdom” about Iraq and the Middle East. Although the book acknowledges US failings in Iraq, the main argument it presents is that the main causes of failure lie in a problematic alliance between Iraqi Shiite Islamist parties and the clerical establishment in Najaf, led by Ayatollah Sistani. To appreciate this new perspective, the book takes you into the history of Iraqi Shiism both as a set of doctrinal and theological beliefs about the world and a lived experience by ordinary Iraqi Shias. The book argues that this understanding hindered Shias from embracing many products of modernity such as nationalism, individualism, humanism, and democratic rule, by consolidating a primordial group identity that ties people to the past, a particular kind of past based on doctrinal supremacy and historical victimhood. Combined, the two have the negative effect of depriving ordinary Iraqi Shias of a personal sense of agency and contributing to a general spirit skeptical of difference. The book also documents people’s push back against this restrictive approach to reality in a variety of contexts. Based on extensive historical and doctrinal research into the distant past of Shiism, the book links the past to the present by examining the unfortunate consequences that grow out of the insistence to allow pre-modern values determine the modern experience of life.
