Download or read book Homies A David Gonzales Retrospective written by David Gonzales and published by Dynamite Entertainment. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cruise on a trip through my memories of drawing lowriders and tees, of creating Homies for the last thirty-five years. A pictorial narrative of one artist following his dreams..." Created by David Gonzales, the Homies first appeared as an underground comic strip that debuted in Lowrider Magazine in 1978, a reflection of his friends and lifestyle. At first a group of tightly knit Chicano buddies from East Los Angeles, the Homies expanded their crew to over 300 characters from all different cultures, genres, and even species. In an inner-city world plagued by poverty and oppression, they formed a strong, binding cultural support system that enabled them to overcome negativity and turn to laughter and good times as an antidote for reality. Homies erupted as a mainstream sensation in 1994 when trend-savvy retailer Hot Topic offered Homies shirts for sale, rapidly becoming popular with the youth market. Following on the heels of a successful T-shirt run, Homies was licensed for figurines in the vending machine toy industry, where all sales records were broken, with over 150 million figurines sold worldwide. The licensing program soon spread to products such as action figures, remote-control and die-cast cars, notebooks, posters, plush, Halloween masks, video games, music, and more, carried by specialty and mass retailers everywhere. History of the Homies is a triumphant celebration of the turbulent times, remarkable artistry, and youthful street culture of a pop culture phenomenon, including hundreds of pictures and a complete guide to Homies figurines.

Download or read book Spanish English Codeswitching in a Written Corpus written by Laura Callahan and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish/English codeswitching in published work represents a claim to the right to participate in the marketplace on a bilingual and not just monolingual basis. This book offers a syntactic and sociolinguistic analysis of the codeswitching in a corpus of thirty texts: novels and short stories published in the United States by twenty-four authors between 1970-2000. An application of the Matrix Language Frame model shows that written codeswitching follows for the most part the same syntactic patterns as its spoken counterpart. The reasons why some written codeswitching is considered to be artificial or inauthentic are examined. An overview of written codeswitching research is given, including titles of many texts in addition to the corpus that contain codeswitching between diverse languages. The book concludes with a look at how codeswitching is used by writers to attain their objectives, and what the implications may be for the relative positions of Spanish, English, and Spanish/English codeswitching in the United States.
Download or read book The Death of My Father the Pope written by Obed Silva and published by MCD. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man mourning his alcoholic father faces a paradox: to pay tribute, lay scorn upon, or pour a drink. A wrenching, dazzling, revelatory debut Weaving between the preparations for his father's funeral and memories of life on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border, Obed Silva chronicles his father's lifelong battle with alcoholism and the havoc it wreaked on his family. Silva and his mother had come north across the border to escape his father’s violent, drunken rages. His father had followed and danced dangerously in and out of the family’s life until he was arrested and deported back to Mexico, where he drank himself to death, one Carta Blanca at a time, at the age of forty-eight. Told with a wry cynicism, a profane, profound anger, an antic, brutally honest voice, and a hard-won classical frame of reference, Silva channels the heartbreak of mourning while wrestling with the resentment and frustration caused by addiction. The Death of My Father the Pope is a fluid and dynamic combination of memoir and an examination of the power of language—and the introduction of a unique and powerful literary voice.

Download or read book Bookish and the Beast written by Ashley Poston and published by Quirk Books. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tale as old as time is made new in Ashley Poston's fresh, geeky retelling of Beauty and the Beast—now with a bonus Starfield story! Rosie Thorne is feeling stuck—on her college application essays, in her small town, and on that mysterious General Sond cosplayer she met at ExcelsiCon. Most of all, she’s stuck in her grief over her mother’s death. Her only solace was her late mother’s library of rare Starfield novels, but even that disappeared when they sold it to pay off hospital bills. On the other hand, Vance Reigns has been Hollywood royalty for as long as he can remember—with all the privilege and scrutiny that entails. When a tabloid scandal catches up to him, he’s forced to hide out somewhere the paparazzi would never expect to find him: Small Town USA. At least there’s a library in the house. Too bad he doesn’t read. When Vance’s and Rosie’s paths collide, sparks do not fly. But as they begrudgingly get to know each other, their careful masks come off—and they may just find that there’s more risk in shutting each other out than in opening their hearts.

Download or read book Bislama Reference Grammar written by Terry Crowley and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2004-05-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bislama is the national language of Vanuatu, the world's most linguistically diverse nation with at least 80 actively spoken Oceanic languages used by about 200,000 people. Bislama began as a plantation pidgin based on English in the nineteenth century, but it has since developed into a unique language with a grammar and vocabulary very different from English. It is one of very few national languages for which there is no readily available reference grammar. This book aims to fill this gap by providing an extensive account of the grammar of Bislama as it is used by ordinary Ni-Vanuatu. It does not, therefore, aim to describe any kind of artificial written norm but sets out to capture a range of different kinds of ways that Ni-Vanuatu will say things in various contexts, both written and spoken, formal and informal. The thrust of this volume is to show that Bislama has a grammar—an unfamiliar concept for those educated in Vanuatu. It also shows that Bislama is a language of considerable complexity, which will come as a surprise to many of its users, who have been taught to view their language as somehow "simple" and even "deficient."
