Book excerpt: This book examines the making and breaking of peripheral selves in and from postsocialist Bosnia in an empirically rich self-reflexive account of politico-economic and ideological developments. Through world systems and postcolonial theory, historical and new materialist optics, discursive and affective analytical registers, and various qualitative methodological choices, the author analyzes peripheral subjectivity in connection to global proletarianization, as well as past and present resistance via social and personal movement(s). She refers to past Yugoslav socialist and anticolonial struggles as well as more recent ones, including the social justice and feminist collective, engaging with workers’ and women’s struggles in postwar Bosnia and the Justice for David movement. Finally, she analyzes the lives of new third-wave Bosnian migrants to Germany post-2015, placing them in juxtaposition with non-European migrants in Bosnian reception centers and exposing labor and race, border struggles and market as new variables for studying selves in this particular context. Writing about “situated knowledge” and “politics of location,” the author stresses the importance of strong affective ties within researcher-researched assemblages urging for deeper coalitions and solidarity among various peripheral, power-differentiated communities. This book will be of interest to readers with backgrounds in linguistics, sociology, post-Yugoslav history, cultural studies and anthropology.

Book excerpt: This book develops a new concept of post-refugee transnationalism to describe experiences of Bosnian refugees who settled in Ireland after fleeing the conflict in 1990s Bosnia and Herzegovina. The book explores their ambivalent relationship with their host and home countries, Ireland and Bosnia, arguing that their current experiences are best described as post-refugee transnationalism. Post-refugee transnationalism is characterised by Bosnians dividing their time between the two countries rather than permanently settling in either and by engaging in summer migrations and diasporic interconnections and affiliations. The book proposes post-refugee transnationalism as different to other instances of transnationalism by stressing its enforced origin provoked by the conflict and institutionalized by the Dayton Peace Agreement. The book combines Foucault’s biopolitics, David Theo Goldberg’s understanding of nation states as racial states and Giorgio Agamben’s expansion on the idea of potentiality, to develop the concept of post-refugee transnationalism.

It is even more the case when those places have been vandalized, divided up, brutalized and scarred. However, as the author shows, these places of humiliation and suffering are also places of desire, with displaced survivors emulating their former homes in the far corners of the globe where they have resettled.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This dissertation explores the processes of incorporation and identity maintenance among refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina who settled in the cities of Boston, Massachusetts, and Hartford, Connecticut, following the 1992-1995 Balkans conflict. After experiencing forced migration, the refugees had to rebuild their pre-war identities, construct new communities, and adjust to a new host setting. Comparing the processes of adaptation and community development between the Bosnian communities of Boston and Hartford, this ethnographic study of 42 refugees in New England reveals variant outcomes in levels of economic integration between urban and rural subjects, as well as dissimilar degrees of interethnic cooperation among the three dominant religious groups--Muslims, Croats, and Serbs. In addition, this work analyzes the impact of ethnoreligious identity and religious institutions on immigrant incorporation patterns found within these two locales and suggests how particular religious institutions help to shape nationalist narratives, facilitate integration, and provide ethnic identity maintenance for Bosnian refugees. Disparate degrees interethnic cooperation found in the Boston and Hartford communities can be attributed to the variables of ethnic and religious concentration, level of education, skill sets, and rural vs. urban origins. The findings of this study indicate that Boston's urban, educated, and multicultural Bosnians live secular lives, express interethnic cooperation, and avoid nationalistic narratives in a post-migration setting. In sum, they are reinventing Yugoslavia in Boston. In contrast, the Hartford community is experiencing a burgeoning religious life after migration due, in part, to the homogeneity of the Bosnian Muslim community, their rural origins, lower levels of education, and poor English language abilities. The galvanization of Muslim religious identity after the war can be partially attributed to access to a new Bosnian American Islamic Cultural Center that reinforces religious identity and simultaneously facilitates immigrant adjustment. Chapters 1 and 2 provide the introductory frameworks and historical overview of the development of ethnic nationalism; the following two chapters explore immigrant integration patterns and the role of religious institutions in that process. Finally, the study ends with a discussion of Bosnian identity maintenance and community life in Chapter 5, followed by concluding remarks.

It is focused on the lives and experiences of a sample of 100 Bosnian families living in Rochester, most of whom have successfully adjusted to a new environment, while facing many religious, cultural, and linguistic challenges. According to the testimony of many Bosnian refugees residing in Rochester, New York, as refugees and newcomers to the city, they faced many challenges including: the language barrier, cultural differences, isolation, fear of being different and not accepted, fear of losing their ethnic and religious identity, prejudice, discrimination, and uncertainty of the future for their children. They also had to overcome inhumane treatment, deportation, grieving, trauma, revenge, forced labor, rape, destruction of cultural and religious monuments, illegal detention, starvation, loss of family members and more. The majority of the participants in this research are Bosnian refugees who fled Bosnia as teenagers or young adults. As such, they were old enough to have formed personal connections to their home culture, religion and language, yet young enough to master and adapt to the systems of an American life. This group must shoulder the burden of fostering solidarity, trust, cultural and religious appreciation among Bosnians in America while simultaneously having to prove their loyalty to their families and their home country. All of this while still facing personal challenges with their older parents, who live either in Bosnia or with them in Rochester. In addition, they face challenges with their own children, who have no memories of living in Bosnia and do not see their religion, language and culture through their parents' lens.
