Book excerpt: Nonrenewable energy resources, comprising fossil fuels and uranium, are not ran domly distributed within the Earth's crust. They formed in response to a complex array of geologic controls, notably the genesis of the sedimentary rocks that host most commercial energy resources. It is this genetic relationship between economic re sources and environment that forms the basis for this book. Our grouping of petro leum, coal, uranium, and ground water may appear to be incongruous or artificial. But our basic premise is that these ostensibly disparate resources share common genetic attributes and that the sedimentological principles governing their natural distributions and influencing their recovery are fundamentally similar. Our combined careers have focused on these four resources, and our experiences in projects worldwide reveal that certain recurring geologic factors are important in controlling the distribution of com mercial accumulations and subsurface fluid flow. These critical factors include the shape and stability of the receiving basin, the major depositional elements and their internal detail, and the modifications during burial that are brought about in these sediments by pressure, circulating fluids, heating, and chemical reaction. Since the first edition of this book in 1983, there has been a quantum leap in the volume of literature devoted to genetic stratigraphy and refinement of sedimentologi cal principles and a commensurate increase in the application of these concepts to resource exploration and development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sedimentary Basins of the United States and Canada, Second Edition, focuses on the large, regional, sedimentary accumulations in Canada and the United States. Each chapter provides a succinct summary of the tectonic setting and structural and paleogeographic evolution of the basin it covers, with details on structure and stratigraphy. The book features four new chapters that cover the sedimentary basins of Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. In addition to sedimentary geologists, this updated reference is relevant for basin analysis, regional geology, stratigraphy, and for those working in the hydrocarbon exploration industry. - Features updates to existing chapters, along with new chapters on sedimentary basins in Alaska and Arctic Canada - Includes nearly 300 detailed, full-color paleogeographic maps - Written for general geological audiences and individuals working in the resources sector, particularly those in the fossil fuel industry

Download or read book Unconventional Gas Reservoirs written by M. Rafiqul Islam and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural gas, especially unconventional gas, has an increasingly important role in meeting the world's energy needs. Experts estimate that it has the potential to add anywhere from 60-250% to the global proven gas reserve in the next two decades. To maintain pace with increasing global demand, Unconventional Gas Reservoirs provides the necessary bridge into the newer processes, approaches and designs to help identify these more uncommon reservoirs available and how to maximize its unconventional potential. Loaded with reservoir development and characterization strategies, this book will show you how to: - Recognize the challenges and opportunities surrounding unconventional gas reservoirs - Distinguish among the various types of unconventional reservoirs, such as shale gas, coalbed methane, and tight gas formations - Drill down and quantify the reservoir's economic potential and other critical considerations - Gain practical insights and tools to efficiently identify, appraise, and develop unconventional gas reservoirs - Understand various techniques used to analyze reservoir parameters and performance as well as how they were applied to numerous real-world case studies - Upgrade to the latest information on perspectives and insights with discussion of key differences used for today's unconventional gas characterization versus original conventional methods that failed in the past

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frontiers in Sedimentary Geology series was established for the student, the researcher, and the applied scientist to enhance their potential to stay abreast of the most recent ideas and developments and to become familiar with certain topics in the field of sedimentary geology. This series deals with subjects that are in the forefront of both scientific and economic interests. The treatment of a subject in an individual volume, therefore, should be a combina tion of topical, regional, and interdisciplinary approaches. The interdisciplinary aspects are becoming more and more important because most studies dealing with the natural sciences cannot effectively stand alone. Although this thrust may sound simple, in reality it is not, basi cally because each discipline has developed its own jargon and definitions ofterms. Communi cation among disciplines is a major issue and can be accomplished more constructively when people with different backgrounds join together at the same symposium and can read from the same volume rather than confining themselves within the world of their own specialty meetings and journals. Books in this series provide this connective link between disciplines. Each book in this series provides a continuous and connected flow of concepts throughout the volume by the use of introductory chapters that outline a topic to help the reader grasp its problems and to understand the contributions that follow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the principles of Sequence Stratigraphy were first published 20 years ago, it was not immediately clear that this concept would revolutionise the way we look at deposition and architecture of sedimentary rocks. Perhaps in retrospect it should not have been so surprising. For the first time seismic data were clear enough that large scale depositional geometries could be resolved; geometries that were not evident from well data alone, and in outcrop work visible only in the largest cliff sections. The observations from seismic data made by the Exxon workers in the 1960's and 1970's were a crucial "piece of the jigsaw" in our knowledge of the way sediments are deposited, and formed the basis for the new paradigm of Sequence Stratigraphy.Gradually through the 1980's the tool of Sequence Stratigraphy was applied to a wide variety of subsurface problems; most commonly large-scale regional reviews of 2D seismic data. Geologists and geophysicists in the oil industry began to realise that here was a way of thinking about rocks that could be used in a true predictive sense. The paradigm implied, that one systems tract should follow another in a predictable way, that observations in one part of a basin had implications in another part, and that undetected play systems could be inferred, and targeted with exploration programs.Sequence Stratigraphy has now gone through a second phase of evolution. The initial concepts have been applied to well and core data. Methodologies have evolved for identifying systems tracts from trends in logs and depositional facies, and from (often subtle) observations in core. The resolving power of 3D seismic data has increased considerably, and we can now see depositional bodies on a relatively small scale, and map their internal character using attribute analysis. Sequence Stratigraphy has entered its High Resolution phase.
