Book excerpt: The study analyzes the history of a proposed US alternative for the Middle East to determine the criteria by which it was measured and found unacceptable, even though apparently strongly endorsed by the Senate. The criteria are then applied to an evaluation of the prospects for future use of the basic technological concept. It was found that the specific alternative proposed was not considered useful by the Senate or administration. Further, the concept of using an expensive economic development project in the hope of solving a political problem was rejected. Escalating costs of nuclear power equipment, and time to availability of large scale water distillation technology also made the feasibility of the project questionable. Current methods of evaluating economic return preclude acceptance of nuclear power desalting alternatives for at least a decade. (Modified author abstract).

The judgement of Iran's nuclear power for a civilian purpose has t obe maintained under international agreement. Beyond that purposes, a country could develop a nuclear power for non-civilian purposes. For the later purposes, the international community must take a serious consideration on it.
