Book Microstructure Property Relationships for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Microstructure Property Relationships for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Aluminum Alloys written by Robert Gordon Dixon and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphite fibers with various coatings were tested for strength. Longitudinal composites were produced from the coated fibers using pure aluminum as the matrix by pressure casting. The strength and microstructure of the composites was evaluated. Longitudinal and transverse composites were also produced using uncoated graphite fibers with various alloy matrices and their strength and microstructure evaluated. The coated fibers were leached from the pure aluminum matrix and examined. The uncoated graphite fibers were leached from the alloy matrices and tested for strength. The coated fibers were not found to be stronger than the uncoated fibers, nor were they effective in increasing composite strengths. Composites produced from uncoated fibers and alloy matrices were quite strong longitudinally with strengths of up to 93 percent of rule of mixtures strength. The same material, when tested in the transverse direction exhibited low strengths, with the failure being interfacial. (Author).

Book Controlled Interphases in Composite Materials

Download or read book Controlled Interphases in Composite Materials written by Hatsuo Ishida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 821 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third International Conference on Composite Interfaces (ICCI-III) was held under the auspecies of ASM International, The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), The Edison Polymer Innovation Co. (EPIC), Case Western Reserve University, Nippon Glass Fiber Co., Nitto Boseki Co., Office of Naval Reserach (ONR), SAMPE Japan, Teijin Co., Mobay Co., Union Carbide Co., and Vetrotex Sain-Gobain. The underlying philosophy of the conference continues to be the promotion of fundamental understanding of the structure and role of composite interfaces. With the growth of composite interface studies, the research direction naturally changes from characterization and understanding of interfacial structure to controlling this structure. For this reason, the conference was subtitled, "Controlled Interphase Structure." The rather unfamiliar phrase "interphase" is used to emphasize the interfacial region whose properties are different from the bulk. The importance of the interphase to the mechanochemical properties has been rapidly recognized among composite researchers in recent years. The conference incorporated nine sessions. No concurrent sessions were planned because of the strong interest among panicipants and organizers to intennix researchers from different disciplines. Papers presented were redistributed in Pans I throught V. Because of this, both the conference and proceedings are not organized based on the traditional disciplines or materials, but rather around concepts.

Book Metal matrix composites Processing and Interfaces

Download or read book Metal matrix composites Processing and Interfaces written by R Everett and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Matrix Composites: Processing and Interfaces provides a unified source of information on metal matrix composites (MMCs). This book contains three parts. Part 1 provides the introductory overview, focusing on the historical perspective on the state of the composites field. The synthesis and processing details on some standard and novel techniques used to fabricate composites are discussed in Part 2. Part 3 is devoted to reviewing techniques in probing, modeling, and modifying composite interfaces. Other topics include the diffusion brazing techniques, chemical vapor deposition, and in situ reinforcement of MMCs. The deformation processing of metal mixtures and optimizing properties of deformation-processed metal/metal composites are also covered in this text. This publication is useful to engineering students studying the processing and interfaces of MMCs.

Book Alloy Design and Process Innovations

Download or read book Alloy Design and Process Innovations written by Prashanth Konda Gokuldoss and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the manufacturing processes that warrants the attention of industrialists, researchers and scientists, because of its ability to produce materials with a complex shape without theoretical restrictions and with added functionalities. There are several advantages to employing additive manufacturing as the primary additive manufacturing process. However, there exist several challenges that need to be addressed systematically. A couple such issues are alloy design and process development. Traditionally alloys designed for conventional cast/powder metallurgical processes were fabricated using advanced AM processes. This is the wrong approach considering that the alloys should be coined based on the process characteristics and meta-stable nature of the process. Hence, we must focus on alloy design and development for AM that suits the AM processes. The AM processes, however, improve almost every day, either in terms of processing capabilities or processing conditions. Hence, the processing part warrants a section that is devoted to these advancements and innovations. Accordingly, the present Special Issue (book) focuses on two aspects of alloy development and process innovations. Here, 45 articles are presented covering different AM processes including selective laser melting, electron beam melting, laser cladding, direct metal laser sintering, ultrasonic consolidation, wire arc additive manufacturing, and hybrid manufacturing. I believe that this Special Issue bears is vital to the field of AM and will be a valuable addition.

Book excerpt: Laser welding is a high-energy process used in a wide range of advanced materials to obtain micro- to macro-sized joints in both similar and dissimilar combinations. Moreover, this technique is widely used in several industries, such as automotive, aerospace, and medical industries, as well as in electrical devices. Although laser welding has been used for several decades, significant and exciting innovations often arise from both the process and/or advanced materials side.

Book Microstructure property performance Relationships of C fiber reinforced Carbon Composite Friction Materials

Download or read book Microstructure property performance Relationships of C fiber reinforced Carbon Composite Friction Materials written by Soydan Ozcan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon/carbon composites are well suited to high energy-friction applications due to their excellent thermal conductivity and capacity, low density, and their ability to withstand the temperatures up to 3000°C. Since friction performance is critical, understanding the fundamental principles of controlling frictional performance is a crucial step in tailored design of Carbon/carbon (C/C) composite friction materials. The frictional performance of C/C composites is known to be dependent on many factors, of which material microstructure and properties (mechanical, thermal, chemical), and serving environment are primary. This dissertation presents experimental research to understand the tribological principles of PAN-fiber reinforced carbon matrix composites.
