Book Full Microstructure Control Through Ion Irradiation

Download or read book Full Microstructure Control Through Ion Irradiation written by Seita Matteo and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the interaction between energetic ions and matter is properly engineered, the microstructure of thin metal films can be tailored to the extent that polycrystals are transformed into single crystals through selective grain growth. At this level of control, microstructure engineering resembles painting: using an energetic ion-beam as the "paintbrush" and the metal film as the "canvas," materials scientists can directly "paint" novel, functional materials.

Book Grain Growth in Nanocrystalline Metal Thin Films Under In Situ Ion Beam Irradiation

Download or read book Grain Growth in Nanocrystalline Metal Thin Films Under In Situ Ion Beam Irradiation written by A. T. Motta and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-situ observations in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to study the microstructure evolution in metal Zr, Pt, Cu, and Au nanocrystalline thin films under ion-beam irradiation. Free-standing films were prepared by sputter deposition. Samples were irradiated in-situ at the Intermediate Voltage Electron Microscope (IVEM) at Argonne National Laboratory with Ar and Kr ions to fluences in excess of 1016 ion/cm2. As a result of irradiation, grain growth was observed in all samples using Bright Field (BF) imaging in the TEM. The average grain size increased monotonically with ion fluence until it reached a saturation value. Similarly to thermal grain growth, the ion-irradiation induced grain growth curves could be best fitted with curves of the type: Dn-;D0n=K?. The irradiations were done at temperatures ranging from 20 to 773 K. The results suggest the existence of three regimes with respect to irradiating temperature: (i) a purely thermal regime, which appears to start above the bulk coarse-grained recrystallization temperature, (ii) a thermally assisted regime where thermal diffusion and irradiation effects combine to increase the rate of grain growth relative to that resulting from either of these mechanisms alone, and (iii) an athermal regime (low-temperature regime) where irradiation can by itself cause grain growth. The transition temperature between the athermal regime and the thermally assisted regime depends on the material, but is in the range 0.14-0.22 times the melting point. The influence of the ion type was also investigated on Zr-Fe irradiated with 600 keV Kr ions versus 600 keV Ar ions.

Book Dewetting and Stress Evolution in Thin Films During Ion Irradiation

Download or read book Dewetting and Stress Evolution in Thin Films During Ion Irradiation written by Kai Zhao and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project studies the morphology evolution of non-wetting metal films on a substrate during ion irradiation. It reveals that the mobility of the solid atoms is significantly improved during irradiation and the non-wetting films can dewet as if they are melted. The ion induced dewetting process can result into patterned nanoscale structures by self-organization. This project also investigates the stress evolution in thin films when they're bombarded with ∼1keV ions. Processes such as vacancy creation and phase transformation play important roles in the stress accumulation of the films. Meanwhile, it is discovered that atoms can be injected into deeper region from the ion bombarded layer during irradiation, inducing a compressive stress generation process. It is also noticed that despite the variance in their microstructures, the films show many common features in stress development during ion irradiation.

Typical requirements on cost, capacity, and performance of today's magnetic storage devices and industry trends in these attributes are given. Scaling components, devices, and materials is shown to be a key factor in further improvement, Challenges to continued scaling are reviewed, particularly as they relate to magnetic nano-structures, materials, and characterization techniques.

Book Fabrication of Metal Microstructures by Single pulse Localized Irradiation of Thin Metal Films

Download or read book Fabrication of Metal Microstructures by Single pulse Localized Irradiation of Thin Metal Films written by Chandra Prakash R. Gaddam and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the formation of microbumps and high-aspect-ratio protrusions on gold, copper, titanium, aluminum films as a result of single-pulse localized laser irradiation. A Q-switched nanosecond-pulse laser, emitting at its fourth harmonic of 266nm was the laser source employed and a demagnifying projection optical system was used to produce micrometer-scale circular laser-irradiation spots. Gold, copper, titanium and aluminum films with a thickness of several hundred nanometers were irradiated, under low-vacuum conditions, with circular laser spots that were several micrometers in diameter. The metal films were deposited by RF or DC sputtering from the corresponding metal targets. The resulting structures were imaged via scanning electron microscopy. The formation mechanism of these structures is briefly discussed in view of our results and other, related published work. We studied the conditions for pulsed laser micro structuring of metal films on various substrates, with main focus on determining fluence levels and irradiation geometry parameters in which the formation of various substrates is possible in a reproducible fashion. The laser-deposited heat transfer within the irradiated films was evaluated using the COMSOL finite-elements modeling software, and the resulting temperature profiles are discussed in the context of the experimentally obtained results.

Book Synthesis Microstructure and Properties of Metallic Materials with Nanoscale Growth Twins

Download or read book Synthesis Microstructure and Properties of Metallic Materials with Nanoscale Growth Twins written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have recently synthesized 330 stainless steel thin films and bulk Cu foils via magnetron sputtering with an average twin spacing of ~ 5 nm. Twin interfaces in both systems are of {III} type and normal to the growth direction. The hardness of sputtered materials is an order of magnitude higher than that of their bulk counterparts. Growth twins with such high twin density and preferred orientation are rarely seen in elemental metals. Sputtered Cu foils exhibited tensile strengths of 1.2 GPa, a factor of 3 higher than that reported earlier for nanocrystalline Cu, average uniform elongation of 1-2% and ductile dimple fracture surfaces. This work provides a new route for the synthesis of ultra-high strength, ductile metals via control of twin spacing and twin orientation in vapor-deposited materials.
