Book excerpt: Treatise on Materials Science and Technology, Volume 25: Embrittlement of Engineering Alloys is an 11-chapter text that describes some situations that produce premature failure of several engineering alloys, including steels and nickel- and aluminum-base alloys. Chapters 1 to 3 consider situations where improper alloy composition, processing, and/or heat treatment can lead to a degradation of mechanical properties, even in the absence of an aggressive environment or an elevated temperature. Chapters 4 and 5 examine the effect of elevated temperatures on the mechanical properties of both ferrous and nonferrous alloys. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the effects of corrosive environments on both stressed and unstressed materials. In these environments anodic dissolution is the primary step that leads to failure. Chapters 8 to 10 deal with the effects of aggressive environments that lead to enhanced decohesion or embrittlement of the metal, such as hydrogen, liquid metal, and irradiation-induced embrittlement. Chapter 11 looks into the embrittlement phenomena occurring during welding, one of the most common processing conditions to which a material could be subjected. This book will prove useful to materials scientists and researchers.

Book excerpt: The effect of plastic deformation on subsequent decomposition in the alloys Al-Si (1.2 percent Si) and Al-Mg-Si (1.4 percent Mg2Si) was studied with an electron microscope. These alloys were chosen because the first is easily quenched and does not age at room temperature and because in the second no decomposition after quenching and natural aging is detected with the electron microscope (although the properties change). These alloys were chosen also because they could be studied by the oxide-film method. This method was used to study the surface of the samples, which was etched before deformation and aging. It is then possible to observe simultaneously, on the electron photographs, precipitation, the block structure, and those alterations (slip lines, bending of blocks, cracks, etc.) in the submicroscopic structure of the alloys which are caused by deformation.

Chapter 4, on iron and steels, presents methodology, microstructure at various levels, strength, ductility and strengthening, toughness and toughening, environmental cracking and design against fracture for many different kinds of steels. Chapter 5, on bulk amorphous alloys, covers the critical cooling rate and the effect of composition on glass formation and the accompanying mechanical and magnetic properties of the glasses. Chapter 6, on nanocrystalline materials, describes the preparation from vapor, liquid and solid states, microstructure including grain boundaries and their junctions, stability with respect to grain growth, particulate consolidation while maintaining the nanoscale microstructure, physical, chemical, mechanical, electric, magnetic and optical properties and applications in cutting tools, superplasticity, coatings, transformers, magnetic recordings, catalysis and hydrogen storage.

Book excerpt: When high strength aluminum alloys are subjected to liquid metals, physical and chemical reactions ensue resulting in what is known as liquid metal embrittlement (LME). A subset of environmentally-assisted cracking, LME is exhibited when a liquid metal, e.g. Hg or Ga, comes into intimate contact with a solid metal having significant susceptibility. As mechanical loads are applied, the interaction between the two metals results in a reduction in the flow properties of the solid metal. Several theories have been proposed to identify the underlying microstructural failure mechanism; however, none have been widely accepted, as failures can typically incorporate features common to several failure theories. In an effort to confirm, extend or replace the physically-based theories, fracture mechanics experiments on Al 7075-T651 in liquid mercury have been conducted. Experiments were conducted in a custom environmental chamber capable of exposing specimens to liquid environments while applying a mechanical load. Through both plane-strain fracture and stress intensity factor-dependent (SIF) tests, fracture toughness values along with incubation periods were analyzed and provided data for a load-based theory of LME. These mechanical test data, along with metallographic analysis, show that the phenomena of LME is both strongly time- and SIF-dependent.

Book excerpt: Aluminum and aluminum alloys are widely used for aircraft structures, where they are subjected to demanding conditions and where is an increased demand for weight reduction and fuel savings. Aluminum comprises 8% of the earth?s crust and is, therefore, the most abundant structural metal. Its production since 1965 has surpassed that of copper and now comes next to iron. This increased use of aluminum alloys leads to a need for deeper understanding of their mechanical properties and the impacts of processing parameters. The mechanical properties can determine by controlling the microstructures of the alloys. For example, precipitation hardening is the main strengthening mechanism improving the tensile and yield strength. Solute atoms, precipitates and dispersoids influences to the yield strength, since they act as distributed pinning points for mobile dislocations, thus increasing the shear stress required to move the dislocations. Another approach is the manipulation of a grain size that can be performed by alloying or plastic deformation processes. Therefore, the precise understanding of each mechanism that can influence the properties of aluminum and its alloys is very important. The aim of this chapter is to shed light on the influence of the processing history on the microstructure and mechanical properties.
