Book Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book Ceramic Matrix Composites written by I M Low and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-25 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of engineering-designed polymer matrix composites in the late 1940s has provided an impetus for the emergence of sophisticated ceramic matrix composites. The development of CMCs is a promising means of achieving lightweight, structural materials combining high temperature strength with improved fracture toughness, damage tolerance and thermal shock resistance. Considerable research effort is being expended in the optimisation of ceramic matrix composite systems, with particular emphasis being placed on the establishment of reliable and cost-effective fabrication procedures. Ceramic matrix composites consists of a collection of chapters reviewing and describing the latest advances, challenges and future trends in the microstructure and property relationship of five areas of CMCs. Part one focuses on fibre, whisker and particulate-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, part two explores graded and layered ceramics, while the five chapters in part three cover nanostructured CMCs in some detail. Refractory and speciality ceramic composites are looked at in part four, with chapters on magnesia-spinel composite refractory materials, thermal shock of CMCs and superplastic CMCs. Finally, part four is dedicated to non-oxide ceramic composites. Ceramic matrix composites is a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects of the interdependence of processing, microstructure, properties and performance of each of the five categories of CMC, with chapters from experienced and established researchers. It will be essential for researchers and engineers in the field of ceramics and more widely, in the field of inorganic materials. Looks at the latest advances, challenges and future trends Compiled by experienced and established researchers in the field Essential for researchers and engineers

This book was released on 1991 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Type C SiC whiskers showed a more obvious toughening effect for Si$\sb3$N$\sb4$ ceramics than the commercial Tokamax SiC whiskers. This might be due to the effect of interfacial bonding and/or the effect of the morphology and size of the whiskers.

Book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride

Download or read book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride written by Toshiyuki Nishimura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, improvements in the heat resistance of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics using grain boundary control and in plasticity at high temperatures using grain size control in order to reduce the cost of shaping Si3N4 are described. The heat resistance of Si3N4 is improved by mixing a slight amount of sintering additive as an impurity into the original material powder. The author presents his findings on the high heat resistance of Si3N4. The author also develops a new fabrication method for Si3N4 nano-ceramics that produces high plastic formability. The method developed offers two improved points in grinding and sintering processes. The author found that the plastic formability of Si3N4 nanoceramics is dependent on load stress; the results of his research are detailed in this book.

Book Mechanical Chemical and Microstructural Characterization of Monazite Coated Silicon Carbide Fibers

Download or read book Mechanical Chemical and Microstructural Characterization of Monazite Coated Silicon Carbide Fibers written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile strengths of as-received Hi-Nicalon and Sylramic fibers and those having monazite surface coatings, deposited by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition, were measured at room temperature and the Weibull statistical parameters determined. The average tensile strengths of uncoated Hi-Nicalon and Sylramic fibers were 3.19 +/- 0.73 and 2.78 +/- 0.53 GPa with a Weibull modulus of 5.41 and 5.52, respectively. The monazite-coated Hi-Nicalon and Sylramic fibers showed strength loss of approx. 10 and 15 percent, respectively, compared with the as-received fibers. The elemental compositions of the fibers and the coatings were analyzed using scanning Auger microprobe and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The LaPO4 coating on Hi-Nicalon fibers was approximately stoichiometric and about 50 nm thick. The coating on the Sylramic fibers extended to a depth of about 100 to 150 nm. The coating may have been stoichiometric LaPO4 in the first 30 to 40 nm of the layer. However, the surface roughness of Sylramic fiber made this profile somewhat difficult to interpret. Microstructural analyses of the fibers and the coatings were done by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction. Hi-Nicalon fiber consists of fine beta-SiC nanocrystals ranging in size from 1 to 30 mn embedded in an amorphous matrix. Sylramic is a polycrystalline stoichiometric silicon carbide fiber consisting of submicron beta-SiC crystallites ranging from 100 to 300 nm. Small amount of TiB2 nanocrystallites (approx. 50 nm) are also present. The LaPO4 coating on Hi-Nicalon fibers consisted of a chain of peanut shape particles having monazite-(La) structure. The coating on Sylramic fibers consisted of two layers. The inner layer was a chain of peanut shape particles having monazite-(La) structure. The outer layer was comprised of much smaller particles with a microcrystalline structure. Bansal, N. P. and Wheeler, D. R. and Chen, Y. L. Glenn Rese

Book Processing Characterization and Mechanical Properties of Beta Silicon Nitride Whisker silicon Nitride Matrix Composites

Download or read book Processing Characterization and Mechanical Properties of Beta Silicon Nitride Whisker silicon Nitride Matrix Composites written by Lynn James Neergaard and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic matrix composites, consisting of $beta$-$rm Sisb3Nsb4$ whisker reinforced polycrystalline $rm Sisb3Nsb4$, were fabricated with controlled whisker/matrix interfaces, characterized on the microstructural level, and evaluated for mechanical reliability. As-received and coated $beta$-$rm Sisb3Nsb4$ whiskers were used to reinforce the $rm Sisb3Nsb4$ matrices. Whisker coatings were achieved by low pressure chemical vapor deposition of BN. As-received and coated whiskers and as-received powders were characterized using XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM techniques. Composite microstructures, including the whisker/matrix interfacial zones, were characterized by SEM and TEM. Mechanical properties of the composites, primarily fracture strength and fracture toughness, were measured and compared to those of the unreinforced matrices.
