Download or read book Microstructural Evolution of Commercial Purity Ti and Superplasticity of Ti 6Al 4V Alloy Processed by Equal Channel Angular Extrusion written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project focused on deformation processing, microstructural development, and mechanical properties of Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Specific tasks included: (1) Study superplastic deformation of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy that have been processed by equal channel angular extrusion and relate the deformation mechanism to the enhancement of superplasticity, and (2) Examine the effect of strain path for Ti fabricated by equal channel angular extrusion and uniaxial compression, with a special focus on the improved mechanical properties of the deformed Ti. As a part of the report, two papers were published in Materials Science and Engineering A (vol. A410-411, 2005, 156-159) and Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A (vol.37, 2006, 381-391). The work was begun under AOARD 034023, "Microstructure development of ultrafine grained Ti and superplasticity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy." Most of that effort was devoted to Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Much progress has been made over the more than two years of effort. We propose to complete our studies by studying, in detail, deformation mechanisms for the enhanced superplasticity in the ultrafine grained Ti-6Al-4V alloy with a special focus on the role of non-equilibrium grain boundaries.

This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive illustration to the superplastic forming/diffusion bonding (SPF/DB) technology developed over decades of research on titanium alloys, process modeling, and its application. SPF/DB technology plays key roles in building aviation components with complicated structures, with highly beneficial effects when well designed. With the ever-increasing demand on components with multiple layers, there is an urgent need for an updated assessment of traditional and modern SPF/DB processing methods. Success critically depends on making the most practical and effective choice of SPF/DB method for a given application. The book introduces titanium and titanium alloys, SPF/DB processing and its modeling, and applications for building typical single or multiple layer(s) structures. Particular attention is paid to illustrating the microstructure evolution during SPF/DB processes. The information for making technical decisions about optimal choice of measurement and evaluation methods is also given in the book. Each chapter follows a focused and pragmatic format. Fully illustrated throughout, the book presents the state of the art in SPF/DB technology in a manner that makes it useful for engineers to improve the established forming processes and quality of components. This book is an essential reading material for industrial practitioners, academic researchers and postgraduates.

Book Understanding Flow Behavior and Microstructure Evolution During Thermomechanical Processing of Mill Annealed Ti 6Al 4V Titanium Alloy

Download or read book Understanding Flow Behavior and Microstructure Evolution During Thermomechanical Processing of Mill Annealed Ti 6Al 4V Titanium Alloy written by Jyoti S. Jha and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium alloy in the mill-annealed condition has a significant store of energy because it is not fully recrystallized and the grains possess a very high dislocation density. It is well established that the extent of softening mechanisms like dynamic recrystallization/recovery (DRX/DRV) are dependent on the stored energy during hot deformation. In this case, stored energy in the prior worked material may facilitate the softening. The hot deformation behavior of mill-annealed Ti-6Al-4V is studied by hot compression tests in the temperature range of 750C950C and strain rate (?, , ?, , , , , , ) range of 0.00110 s -1 for 60 % deformation. The true stress-strain curve of the compression tests exhibits the variation in flow stress ( ? ) characteristics in a wide range of temperature and strain rate (T, ,, ?, , ?, , , , , , ). The activation energy calculated from the phenomenological constitutive equation is significantly higher than the self-diffusion activation energy, which suggests DRX as the main softening process. However, ? -> ? phase transformation below the ? -transition temperature during hot deformation substantiates the occurrence of a mechanism other than DRX. In the lower temperature regime T (850C), softening is caused by the DRX process at a lower deformation rate ?, ?, , , , , (

Book Micromechanics of Transformation Superplasticity in Ti 6Al 4V TiBw Composites

Download or read book Micromechanics of Transformation Superplasticity in Ti 6Al 4V TiBw Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformation superplasticity is a deformation mechanism induced by thermally-cycling a polymorphic material through the phase transformation range while simultaneously applying an external biasing stress. Unlike microstructural superplasticity, which requires a fine, equiaxed grain structure, this mechanism can be applied to coarse-grained alloys and composites. In this article, we review our research on transformation superplasticity of Ti-6Al-4V/TiB-whisker reinforced composites, during thermal cycling through the titanium [alpha]/[beta] transformation range. The composites exhibit Newtonian flow and superplastic extension under these conditions. We describe the constitutive behavior of composites containing 0, 5 and 10 vol% reinforcing whiskers, and consider the effects of load transfer from matrix to whisker on superplastic deformation using existing rheological models. Additionally, strain hardening due to gradual whisker alignment is observed, and rationalized in terms of increased load transfer for aligned whiskers.

Book Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Titanium Alloys written by Artur Shugurov and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium and its alloys are widely used engineering materials within the aerospace, automotive, energy and chemical industries. Their unique combination of high strength-to-weight ratio, strong resistance to creep, excellent corrosion resistance, and low heat conductivity makes them suitable for a wide range of applications. A large variety of microstructures, including lamellar, martensite, equiaxed globular and bimodal (duplex) microstructures can be obtained in titanium alloys depending on the thermomechanical processing routes. Despite a large amount of work in the field of investigation of microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of titanium alloys, detailed studies of the effect of their microstructure on the mechanical behavior are still necessary because of ever-increasing demands for structural materials to optimize their properties for different applications by varying processing parameters and resulting microstructures. This Special Issue is focused on various aspects of microstructure evolution in titanium alloy samples obtained using traditional and additive technologies and subjected to different processing techniques as well as on the relation between their microstructure and mechanical behavior. The presented original articles cover the areas of preparation and experimental characterization of titanium alloys as well as computer simulation of their mechanical behavior under different loading conditions.

Book Superplasticity in Metals and Ceramics

Download or read book Superplasticity in Metals and Ceramics written by T. G. Nieh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes advances in the field of superplasticity, the ability of certain materials to undergo very large tensile strains. This phenomenon has increasing commercial applications, but also presents a fascinating scientific challenge in attempts to understand the physical mechanisms that underpin it. The authors emphasize the materials aspects of superplasticity. Beginning with a brief history of the phenomenon, they describe the two major types of superplasticity-- fine-structure and internal-stress superplasticity-- and discuss their operative mechanisms. They also present microstructural factors controlling the ductility and fracture in superplastic materials. Observations of superplasticity in metals (including aluminum, magnesium, iron, titanium and nickel), ceramics (including monoliths and composites), intermetallics (including iron, nickel, and titanium base), and laminates are thoroughly described. This is a valuable text for graduate students and researchers in materials science and engineering.
