Download or read book Fungi in vegetation science written by W. Winterhoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers will perhaps be surprised to find a volume about fungi within a handbook of vegetation science. Although fungi traditionally feature in textbooks on botany, at least since Whittaker (1969), they have mostly been categorised as an independent kingdom of organisms or, in contrast to the animal and plant kingdom, as probionta together with algae and protozoa. More relevant for ecology than the systematic separation of fungi from plants is the different lifestyle of fungi which, in contrast to most plants, live as parasites, saprophytes or in symbiosis. Theoretical factors aside, there are also practical methodological considerations which favour the distinction between fungal and plant communities, as has been shown for example by Dörfelt (1974). Despite their special position the coenology of fungi has been dealt with in the handbook of vegetation science. It would be wrong to conclude that we underestimate the important differences between fungal and plant communities. The reasons for including the former are that mycocoenology developed from phytocoenology, the similarity of the methods and concepts still employed today and the close correlation between fungi and plants in biocoenoses.

Download or read book The Rare Plants of the Mingan Archipelago written by Line Couillard and published by Environment Canada Parks. This book was released on 1987 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mingan Archipelago lies off the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, north of Anticosti Island in the vicinity of Havre St-Pierre. This book begins with a description of the geography, climate, and geology of the Archipelago, the five categories of rare plants later described, their habitat setting, and the origins of the plants, mainly with respect to the last ice age. This is followed by illustrated descriptions of rare plants in the following categories: endemic plants confined to the Gulf area; species from the west (Cordilleran plants); Arctic or Arctic-alpine species; Quebec boreal species; and species at the northern limit of their range. Information provided for each plant includes common English and French name, Latin name and family, origin of Latin name, plant description and habitat, and geographic range.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This field guide covers the native plant communities with a component of Garry oak (Quercus garryana) in British Columbia. It is a guide to identification of these communities, which can be applied to the woodlands, savannah, meadow, and rock outcrops within and near the zone of influence of oak canopy. The guide does not cover very specific occurrences, such as vernal pools, or the broader set of associated ecosystems that help form the Garry oak landscape."--Document.
