Download or read book The Attention Merchants written by Tim Wu and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the award-winning The Master Switch, who coined the term "net neutrality”—a revelatory, ambitious and urgent account of how the capture and re-sale of human attention became the defining industry of our time. "Dazzling." —Financial Times Ours is often called an information economy, but at a moment when access to information is virtually unlimited, our attention has become the ultimate commodity. In nearly every moment of our waking lives, we face a barrage of efforts to harvest our attention. This condition is not simply the byproduct of recent technological innovations but the result of more than a century's growth and expansion in the industries that feed on human attention. Wu’s narrative begins in the nineteenth century, when Benjamin Day discovered he could get rich selling newspapers for a penny. Since then, every new medium—from radio to television to Internet companies such as Google and Facebook—has attained commercial viability and immense riches by turning itself into an advertising platform. Since the early days, the basic business model of “attention merchants” has never changed: free diversion in exchange for a moment of your time, sold in turn to the highest-bidding advertiser. Full of lively, unexpected storytelling and piercing insight, The Attention Merchants lays bare the true nature of a ubiquitous reality we can no longer afford to accept at face value.

Whether your favorite YouTube video is a cat on a Roomba, “Gangnam Style,” the “Bed Intruder” song, an ASAPscience explainer, Rebecca Black's “Friday,” or the “Evolution of Dance,” Kevin Allocca's Videocracy reveals how these beloved videos and famous trends--and many more--came to be and why they mean more than you might think. YouTube is the biggest pool of cultural data since the beginning of recorded communication, with four hundred hours of video uploaded every minute. (It would take you more than sixty-five years just to watch the vlogs, music videos, tutorials, and other content posted in a single day!) This activity reflects who we are, in all our glory and ignominy. As Allocca says, if aliens wanted to understand our planet, he'd give them Google. If they wanted to understand us, he'd give them YouTube. In Videocracy, Allocca lays bare what YouTube videos say about our society and how our actions online--watching, sharing, commenting on, and remixing the people and clips that captivate us--are changing the face of entertainment, advertising, politics, and more. Via YouTube, we are fueling social movements, enforcing human rights, and redefining art--a lot more than you'd expect from a bunch of viral clips.

This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Prof. Dr. Ramón Antonio Hernández Chirinos de Jesus Published by : Global Academy Publishing House This book consists of seven chapters. In the first chapter, the measurement invariance of the Test Anxiety scale in the PISA 2015 cycle was examined by gender with 53 different country data. It was concluded that 50 countries achieved strict invariance and 3 countries achieved scalar invariance. These results show that the test anxiety scale consisting of five items provides measurement invariance according to gender in different languages and cultures, and therefore can be used with confidence. In the second chapter, In the studies conducted in Turkey, depression, anxiety, CAD, somatization, hostility (anger and aggression) and psychoticism symptoms were investigated; Research on symptoms such as OCD, FA and PD has been found to be very limited. For this reason, more research on the effect of art therapy on mental symptoms in adolescents such as OCD, FA, PD is recommended in Turkey. Although there has been increasing interest in art therapy in Turkey in recent years, studies in this field remain limited. Studies on the effect of art therapy on the mental symptom levels of adolescents in Turkey are insufficient. It is thought that this review study will provide facilitating findings for mental health professionals in examining the effect of art therapy on the mental symptoms of adolescents. In the third chapter, critically examines the theme of female individuation as portrayed in Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse and Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. Using a careful analysis of these literary works, this chapter argues that Woolf and Plath use their female characters to address the daunting challenges women face in their search for a separate identity within a patriarchal society. Both Mrs. Ramsay in To the Lighthouse and Esther Greenwood in The Bell Jar struggle with the arduous task of self-definition amid societal expectations deeply rooted in traditional gender roles. By closely examining these characters’ paths to self-assertion, this chapter illuminates the complicated and multi-layered process of female individuation within a patriarchal framework. The deliberate selection of two works for this study has provided valuable insight into the issue of gender stereotypes and their impact on characters. Esther Greenwood in The Bell Jar demonstrates a deep awareness of the societal expectations and gender stereotypes imposed upon her. Her persistent efforts to challenge these norms are met with repeated setbacks that resemble the experience of hitting a metaphorical glass ceiling. In the fourth chapter, the authors attempt to analyze the strategy by using the Theory of Regime Effectiveness and the Concept of Humanitarian Strategy which specifically focuses on two dimensions. This research uses a qualitative approach and focuses on descriptive research. The research is also focused on 2019-2020 as the year of implementation of the Women's Protection and Empowerment policy. The fifth chapter in the context of factors such as an aging population and an increasing retirement age, the study included findings that various policies and incentives should be implemented to encourage the participation of older workers in the labor force. It also details how to provide continuing education and skills development opportunities, keep an ageing workforce in employment and be competitive. In the sixth chapter it is emphasized that sharing is an issue that parents should be aware of. When sharing content about children, the importance of protecting their privacy and safety is explained. In the seventh chapter, Research on "Material Design and the Use of Material in Social Studies History Teaching" is included. It has been explained that grounding research on learning and teaching processes with a theory will provide great benefits in teaching by improving the scientific aspect of that work. It has been mentioned that the subjects of the history of social studies consist mostly of verbal information and that the strengthening of memory is useful in the teaching of the history of social studies. This book has been prepared for academics, researchers, doctoral students and policy makers working in the field of education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As timely as the latest tweet, this book tracks the digital revolution as a paradigm shift that is transforming popular culture in as yet unforeseen ways. Bloggerati, Twitterati: How Blogs and Twitter Are Transforming Popular Culture explores the ongoing digital revolution and examines the way it is changing—and will change—the way people live and communicate. Starting from the proposition that the Internet is now the center of popular culture, the book offers descriptions of blogs and Twitter and the online behavior they foster. It looks at the demographics of users and the impact of the Internet on knowledge, thinking, writing, politics, and journalism. A primary focus is on the way blogs and tweets are opening up communication to the people, free from gatekeepers and sanctioned rhetoric. The other side of the coin is the online hijacking of the news and its potential for spreading misinformation and fomenting polarization, topics that are analyzed even as the situation continues to evolve. Finally, the book gathers predictions from cultural critics about the future of digital popular culture and makes a few predictions of its own.

Download or read book Journalism and Celebrity written by Bethany Usher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-18 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful book traces the development of journalism and celebrity and their relationship to and influence on political and social spheres from the beginnings of capitalist democracy in the 18th century to the present day. Journalism and Celebrity provides the first account of its kind, revealing the people, places, platforms, and production practices that created celebrity journalism culture, following its origins in the London-based press to its reinvention by the American mass media. Through a transdisciplinary approach to theory and method, this book argues that those who place celebrity in binary to what journalism should be often miss the importance of their mutual dependency in making our societies what they are. Including historical and contemporary case studies from the UK and US, this book is excellent reading for journalism, communication, media studies, and history students, as well as scholars in the fields of journalism, celebrity, cultural studies and political communication.

Each book comprises all-new stories, each one set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the respective city. Curet, Summer Brenner, Michael David Lukas, Aya de León, and Owen Hill. Praise for Berkeley Noir “Each story evokes the dark side of a Berkeley neighborhood and pays tribute both to the city's history as a haven for outcasts and as a literary metropolis. If you race through it, consider picking up San Francisco Noir and Oakland Noir.” —Diablo Magazine, a Top Ticket choice “In “Lucky Day,” Thomas Burchfield reveals the evil that can come when a well-meaning aide breaks his boss’s cardinal rule never to allow patrons into the library early. A worried mom from Holloway wangles her son a prized place in the Berkeley school district in Aya de León’s “Frederick Douglass Elementary.” . . . . J.M. Curet’s “Wifebeater Tank Top,” the tale with the firmest criminal pedigree, is the most violent, but its poetic language and come-from-nowhere ending make it the best.” —Kirkus Reviews “The 16 stories set in Berkeley, Calif., in this above average Akashic noir anthology offer little actual noir but a heaping helping of crime, with almost every entry featuring at least a murder or kidnapping . . . . Readers will be glad that many of these tales are fun in a way that traditional noir isn’t.” —Publishers Weekly
Download or read book The Work and Play of the Mind in the Information Age written by Phillip Kalantzis-Cope and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells a series of living stories about a domain of social activity, “the work and play of the mind,” in a particular historical epoch: the “information age.” The stories concern political processes and movements as varied as the World Trade Organization’s Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, China’s Great Firewall, practices of image sharing in social media, Occupy Wall Street, The Arab Spring, The Alt-Right, and the use of geographical indications by indigenous peoples and farmers to defend their lifestyles. In its theoretical analysis, the book illuminates four alternative political agendas for the work and play of the mind. These four “propertyscapes” represent competing visions for social life, framing projects for collective political action that are at times competing, at times overlapping. The author prompts us to consider whose property is the work and play of the mind, as well as addressing larger questions regarding the framing of political space, the kinds of political communities we may need for the future, and the changing place of the work and play of the mind within these social imaginaries. The book will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including media and communications, arts and design, law, politics and interdisciplinary social sciences.
