Book Computers and Informatics in Developing Countries

Download or read book Computers and Informatics in Developing Countries written by Mohan Munasinghe and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers and Informatics in Developing Countries is a collection of papers documenting the conference of the Expert Group on Computers and Informatics for Development which investigates how the international scientific and development community can assist developing countries in using computer and informatics technology to promote progress and growth. The papers address the need for developing countries to formulate and apply computer and informatics policies for development, as well as the role of an International Centre for Computers and Informatics (ICCI) should play in the development process. The ICCI should be based on the network principle that links other regional and national computer centers. The advantages of the network principle are lower startup costs, avoidance of setting up a large organization, and localized services of needs. An international organization similar to ICCI can accelerate Third World developmental efforts following the identification of needs of developing countries as regards computer and informatics, setting of clear objectives of ICCI, and meeting with potential donors. The collection is suitable for heads of both non-government agencies and government departments involved in international aid, education, or development, and also to administrators of educational institutions and philanthropic organizations.

Book Microelectronics and Society

Download or read book Microelectronics and Society written by G. Friedrichs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through automation and miniaturisation, microelectronics has vast potential for thrusting society into a new phase. It promises to revolutionise the information handling aspects of our lives. But to gain maximum benefit from this breakthrough, microelectronics must be harnessed to society's needs. To help this process a multidisciplinary group of authors has prepared a report to the Club of Rome on the likely impact of microelectronics on our futures

Book Flexible Automation in Developing Countries

Download or read book Flexible Automation in Developing Countries written by Ludovico Alcorta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the extent of, and motives for, the diffusion of flexible automation (FA) at global level and then turns to the local and firm level, bringing together in-depth studies of sixty-two firms in Brazil, India, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey and Venezuela. Research focuses on the impact of computer-numerically-controlled machine tools on scale and scope by exploring changes in lot sizes and product variety (product scale and scope), total plant output (plant scale) and total firm output (firm scale). Barriers to setting up FA-based operations are discussed, as are factors which may affect a decision to locate in a developing country. The contributed studies reveal a relatively slow diffusion of FA in developing countries and it is demonstrated that while FA possibly increases scope, it also requires that plant output be increased in order to maintain efficiency. Alcorta concludes that the location in developing countries will probably only be viable for large domestic firms, multinationals seeking to relocate simple but labour intensive assembly processes and firms in countries with significant domestic markets. This work is unique in addressing the scale and scope issues in developing countries and in the wealth of information regarding machine tools which it provides. The data provided in the appendix includes official United Nations data, previously unpublished. This will be of use for all research into trends in the use of machine tools.

Book Telecommunications in Developing Countries

Download or read book Telecommunications in Developing Countries written by Michael Hobday and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telecommunications in Developing Countries (1990) stresses the importance of modern, micro electronics-based telecommunications for developing economies in providing a basic communications infrastructure for economic and industrial development and the springboard for new information technology activities. Although progress in telecommunications has so far been concentrated in the most advanced regions of the world, some developing countries can bypass older, less efficient forms of telecommunications and go straight to microelectronic technology. This book is the first to examine the challenges and difficulties facing developing countries in this field. extending existing theories of technology transfer and diffusion, Michael Hobday offers an explanation of the forces for change in the telecommunications industry. He then examines Brazil's experience in telecommunications, from developing the technology and building up a modern infrastructure to controlling multinational suppliers of equipment. Dr Hobday explains why Brazil's efforts in this area have succeeded, and offers lessons for other developing countries.

Book The Socio Economic Impact of Microelectronics

Download or read book The Socio Economic Impact of Microelectronics written by J. Berting and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Socio-Economic Impact of Microelectronics contains papers presented at an international conference on socio-economic problems and potentialities of the application of micro-electronics held in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, in September 1979. Organized into eight sections, this book begins with the technological evaluation of microelectronics. Subsequent sections focus on the social economic and political consequences of the widespread use of microelectronics; opportunities and problems for socialist countries brought about by microelectronics technology; effects of microelectronics on developing countries; as well as problems connected with industrial relations and organization of work. The influence of the technology on political/economic, epistemological, ethical/moral, and esthetic values and a broad concept of informatics introducing the notions of living and non-living environments as well as of human, non-human, constructed, natural, and abstract systems are explained. The last section contains the conclusions of the chairman of the conference on the application of microelectronics.
